Unit Rationale

Without mathematics, there's nothing you can do. Everything around you is
mathematics. Everything around you is numbers. Shakuntala Devi
Middle level learners are not keen on taking a trip or exploring as they dont want to
appear different from their peers. They also dont like to think that math is used in
everyday life. In this unit the students will understand that the four concepts:
Adding integers with the same sign, Adding Integers with different signs,
Subtracting Integers, and Applying Addition and Subtraction of integers are things
they will need to know for the rest of their lives. Many students have gone on trips
all over the world, in this unit I will show that taking a trip to lake, going to a football
game, taking a hike, having a fun game of golf, and taking a trip on an elevator may
sometimes cause you to have to revert back to math. Students will be able to
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with
rational numbers. (7.NS.3) This unit will encourage middle level learners to
inquire, investigate, imagine and explore!
This interdisciplinary unit is intended to promote a positive outlook on doing math
for middle level learners; these concepts will be beneficial as they enter our global
economy and are employed for careers that do not yet exist.

Relevance to Students

Aligns with grade and state standards for 7 th grade.

Teaches exploration of different concepts of math.
Teaches exploration on taking trips around the world or even area.
Promotes a positive outlook on doing math.

Standards

7. NS. 1 Apply and extend previous understanding of addition and

subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and
subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
1.6.6.A: Listen critically and respond to others in small and large group
situations.
7. NS. 1 Apply and extend previous understanding of addition and
subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and
subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.
7. NS. 1b Understand p + q as the number located a distance |q| from p, in
the positive or negative direction depending on whether q is positive or
negative. Show the number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are additive
inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world
contexts.

7. NS. 1c Understand subtraction of rational numbers as adding the additive

inverse, p q = p + q. Show that the distance between two rational numbers
on the number line is the absolute value of their difference, and apply this
principle in real-world contexts.
7. NS. 3 Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four
operations with rational numbers.
