Falls student recognized for Badger State honor

Elected to education post at program
BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

Menomonee Falls High School senior

Isabelle Abbott learned more about government while participating in the Badger
Girls State program over the summer.
Badger Girls State is a program
through the American Legion Auxiliary in
which participants learn about leadership
in government. The week-long program
over the summer includes an election, and
Abbott was elected "Superintendent of
Schools" during Badger Girls State. Abbott
was recognized by the Menomonee Falls
School Board during a "finest" presentation at the Sept. 28 board meeting.
Abbott recently introduced State
Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony
Evers during his "State of the State"
address in the Capitol Rotunda.
"Isabelle did a phenomenal job," high
school Principal Cory Golla added.
"Everybody around us commented that
she did not miss a beat at all, it was a
powerful introduction."
Abbott explained the Badger State program "is just as local and state govern-

IN THIS
ISSUE...

ment would be, except it's at hyperspeed." She said the first day involved
learning about local government as citizens and learning how to be American citizens. She said she had the idea of running for the "governor" post at the event,
but opted against it.
"I have more of a passion for education," Abbott said."A conversation of education was a large one at Badger Girls
State. Instead of talking about it, I wanted to do something."
She explained the entire "election"
involves a speech to those in attendance.
She said she learned different aspects of
being a citizen and a voice in government.
"Not just sitting back and letting
things happen, but participating in it
fully," Abbott said.
Being part of the process is nothing
new for Abbott, as she was the student representative on the School Board last year.
She introduced her parents Christopher
and Nata, adding "they are supportive in
all of my aspirations.
"They're the coolest people I know,"
she said.

NOTICE TO MENOMONEE FALLS WATER CUSTOMERS

FLUSHING OF WATER MAINS

The Menomonee Falls Water Utility will be cleaning and flushing water mains from
7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. beginning October 12th and continuing through October
30th. The flushing will remove most of the natural minerals that have settled in the
mains such as iron, a harmless-reddish brown mineral that discolors the water.
If you observe the Water Utility personnel working in your area, refrain from using
water or use as little as possible for one-half to three-quarters of an hour to insure
that the water has settled in the mains. This will also help prevent any iron from
being drawn into your water piping system.
If you do find that your water has become discolored, refrain from using it for an
additional one-half to three-quarters of an hour. Then draw off the remaining discolored water through the COLD WATER FAUCET ONLY.
Your cooperation during this flushing procedure will benefit all water customers.

VILLAGE OF GERMANTOWN
For your convenience the Village Public Works Department is
scheduling a Fall brush pick-up starting the second Monday in October
(October 12, 2015). Although this process will take approximately 2
weeks to complete, we will not be extending the pick-up, or picking up
brush that is put out after Sunday, October 11, 2015.
Limbs shall be no more than 6 foot in length and placed at the curb with
the trunk facing the street for easier handling. Please tie branches 2 or
smaller into bundles no larger than 2 feet in diameter using twine or light
rope. Your cooperation with this will greatly increase the efficiency at
which we can pick up the brush. Brush in containers WILL NOT be
picked up as too often there is yardwaste in the bottom of the
container. Yardwaste and leaves are not included in
the pick-up. We encourage you to take your
yardwaste to the Recycling Center.
Please be aware that raking leaves into the
street area is against Village Ordinance and
the Village of Germantown WILL NOT pick
up such leaves. Again, we encourage you to
take your leaves to the Recycling Center.

Habitat volunteers mark Day of Service

Volunteers for Habitat for Humanity
of Washington and Dodge Counties
took a break from constructing a home
in the village of Jackson Sept. 11 to
mark the National Day of Service and
the organization's Faith Build Week.
Russ Wanta, executive director for
Habitat for Humanity of Washington
and Dodge Counties, said the non-profit organization focuses on addressing
the housing needs of low income families.
"This what we choose to do, I think
we do it very well," he said. This year,
Habitat for Humanity has completed
its one millionth home nationwide
since the organization was formed 38
years.
He explained that Habitat does not
make a profit on its homes, does not
charge interest and gives up to 40
years for families to pay them back.
"That is the reason it works," he

said.
He also explained that Habitat for
Humanity operates as the builder and
banks for the homes it constructs.
Among those at the Jackson site
were representatives of CrossWay
Church, Bradley Corporation and the
GPS Education Partners. Morgan Pfaff,
director of family services for Habitat
for Humanity, mentioned all the
groups that are working at the Jackson
site. There were approximately 20 people at the Jackson site that day.
"We're just thrilled by all the hands
that come here and all the ways that
you are serving not only Habitat, but
your community. Thank you again for
being part of this," she said.
She later explained that as part of a
National Day of Remembrance and
Service, the day was an opportunity to
celebrate all the members of the comSee DAY OF SERVICE PAGE 11

"We just wanted to take this opportunity to mark that occasion and to
celebrate the many open and willing
hearts that serve with Habitat for
Humanity," Pfaff said.
The house being constructed in
Jackson is a side-by-side that will serve
two families. Pfaff noted that Habitat
will provide the mortgage, which is
based on the families income. Work
began on the home in the summer and
it hoped to be completed by the end of
the year. Habitat for Humanity of
Washington and Dodge Counties
received a $50,000 grant from Thrivent
Financial to assist with the project.
As the program ended, Wanta
thanked the volunteers for their work
on the project.
"I know that you're all eager to get
to work and eager to make a difference,
so we don't want to hold that up any
further with our festivities, so have a
great, great day -- be as productive as
you can be while being as safe as you
can be," Wanta said.

Miranda came to WCHS as a

stray but with her sweet
personality, she won't be here
long! She is a loving kitty who
is a bit on the quieter, shy side.
If given the chance in a calm household, Miranda will
be a great cat. Over time, she will likely bloom into a
confident kitty and since she is only 5, she will be
playful and curious. She may be best in a home with
older kids who will give her love and attention and then
allow her to find her favorite spot to catch a cat nap.

Tip of the Week: Training tip. If you and your pooch haven't been active outdoors in a while because of
the summer heat, do some remedial recall training. Dogs, like people, get rusty on their skills if they aren't
using them.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told by my

dentist to have laser surgery to fix my gum
disease. Can you comment on whether this is
safe and if it is better than the deep cleanings I
have been getting for years?
Dear Jan, we now have a CO2 Superpulsed
laser at Hampton Dental Associates. The CO2
laser is the most widely studied laser on the
market today with the most University
supported articles outlining their safety and
effectiveness. I can tell you that lasers are
wonderful tools in dentistry if they are used
correctly. The ADA Council on Scientific
Affairs has recently published a position paper
on lasers and how they are used in dentistry.
Some of the salient points of their paper are as
follows:
There are currently more than twenty
cleared indications for use for dental lasers in
the United States.
According to the ADA position paper: The
dental literature indicates that when lasers are
used as an adjunct to meticulous root planing,
mechanical or chemical curettage (i.e., the
intentional removal of the epithelial lining of
the sulcus) (lasers) offer no consistent benefit
beyond scaling and root planing alone with
respect to gain of the periodontal attachment.
Additional clinical data from properly
designed clinical trials with adequate sample
sizes are still required before it can be known to
what extent LANAP (Laser assisted new
attachment procedures) are safe and effective
across the spectrum of patients with chronic
periodontitis.
So while lasers can be used for removing
lesions, performing frenectemies (removing
tissue that holds tongues or lips down) and
many other soft tissue applications it has not
been found to definitively treat gum disease. If
our readers wish to be seen for evaluation of

soft tissue problems, melanin pigment
removal, frenectemies or evaluation and
treatment of gum problems we invite them to
call us for an examination at 414-464-9021.

BAY TOPS
GERMANTOWN
FOR NORTH
SHORE LEAD
Cedarburg next
for Warhawks
BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

The winner of the Germantown-Whitefish Bay

Sept. 25 was decided on the very last play.
Trailing 24-21 after Whitefish Bay took the lead
with 2:47 left in the game on a 26-yard field goal by
Bailey Wieland, Germantown mounted a final drive
that got to the Blue Dukes 10-yard line. With 6 seconds left, Germantown's Nate Seymour threw to Jack
Brzkala in the corner of the end zone, but Bay's
Michael Kirkendoll intercepted the pass.
"You can't ask for a better position to be in at the
end of the game than that," Germantown Coach Jake
Davis said. "It happens. We've been here and it's happened to us before. That's football -- that's what this
game is and we knew it was going to be like that."
The final play gave Whitefish Bay a 4-0 North
Shore Conference record while Germantown fell into a
tie with Cedarburg and Homestead with a 3-1 conference record. Germantown was to host Cedarburg Oct.
2.
Whitefish Bay had a 14-0 lead early in the second
quarter following 5- and 2-yard runs by Van
Bassindale. Germantown mounted a drive late in the
second quarter that ended with a 4-yard run into the
end zone by Seymour. Germantown then mounted
drives in the third quarter that ended with a 1-yard
run by Austin Mozdzen and a 2-yard run by Seymour
to give the Warhawks 21-14 lead heading into the
fourth quarter.
But the field position changed in Bay's favor on a
long punt that gave Germantown possession inside
their own 20-yard line and the Blue Duke's defense
forced a punt, setting up a Whitefish Bay drive that
ended on a 50-yard pass play from Jake Fisher to
Christopher Caspari with 8:44 remaining. Whitefish
Bay's defense again stopped Germantown and the Blue

Dukes were mounting a final drive that stalled, leading to the field goal by Wieland and setting the stage
for the final moments of the game.
"I was happy with the way they fought," Davis
said." We were down 14-0, just like last year, and they
fought back the same. That's what we've got to continue to build on, those kinds of moments, and keep
rising. We've just got to be able to start better than we
did and get after it."
Menomonee Falls 37, West Allis Central 13: Mike
Conrardy picked up a Central fumble and returned it

32-yards at the 5:15 mark of the first quarter for

Menomonee Falls. Bryce McMurtry of Menomonee Falls
completed 10 of 16 passes for 190 yards while also
running 10 times for 131 yards and one touchdown.
With the win, Menomonee Falls improves to 3-1 in
the Greater Metro Conference and 3-3 overall.

touchdown. Hamilton improved to 2-2 in the Greater

School board updated on borrowing request

The Menomonee Falls School Board
got a first look Sept. 28 at its shortterm borrowing that will occur toward
the end of this year.
Jeff Gross, director of business
services, explained that the borrowing
occurs by districts to meet cash flow
needs until tax receipts arrive in
January. Gross said that while the
district has a fund balance around 20
percent, it runs to zero at the end of
November. The borrowing is paid back
in February.
Gross noted that the district used
to engage in borrowing for nine

months but has reduced that to four

months, as cash reserves have been
built up.
The district will be borrowing $4.5
million, which is $250,000 more than
last year. Gross said the district is getting less state aid than last year and
the district needed more to cover the
shortfall. He said the district is pooling its borrowing with five other districts to get a better rating from
Moody's Investor Service and to make
it more appealing to investors.
The School Board will take final
action on the request Oct.12.

Etc:
A new set of standards for general
music programming has been drafted
and will be brought to the Curriculum
and Learning Committee within the
next few months, board member David
Noshay said during a report summarizing the committee's activities. Noshay
said the standards will be based on the
National Core Arts Standards.
In addition, music staff has met
with a consultant to discuss national
trends in music, K-12 sequencing of
music. Noshay said future work for
the music team will include develop-

ing courses for general music from

grades 6-12 while keeping the transition from the elementary school level
in mind and looking at replacing a
music appreciation option with a new
course that fits the district "academy"
focus.
"That team is also putting forward
some exciting opportunities to really
blend, all the way from elementary
through high school, different programming that will engage the students in a much more robust way,"
Noshay said.

E.R. Wagner agreement approved by Falls board

The Menomonee Falls Village Board
approved two items Sept. 21 related to
E.R. Wagner moving its operations to a
site in the village's fifth tax incremental finance district.
The company will be moving its
operations to W130 N8691 Old Orchard
Road. According to information from
the village, the company will be constructing a 157,000 square foot facility
for the manufacture of stamped,
machined, and wrapped assemblies.
The board approved an initial resolution for an Industrial Development
Revenue bond for the project. Trustee

Steve Raymonds said $10 million in

industrial revenue bonds will be issued
for the project. The industrial revenue
bond is a federal program in which the
village is a conduit for federal bonds for
industrial development or redevelopment. Any liability is covered through
insurance and guarantees from the federal government.
During discussion, Raymonds noted
that there is no liability on the village's
part and that it is just a "pass through"
process. Raymonds added that the
bonds are tax exempt.
The board also approved a developer

funded site preparation and development agreement with E.R. Wagner

Holding LLC. Raymonds said the
Community Development Authority has
proposed conditions to help residents
along Revere Drive by camoflauging the
noise. He said the development agreement includes reimbursing Wagner
$600,000 if they do certain improvements before June 2017. The reimbursement would be paid after the work is
completed.
"The funds come from cash. The TIF
district is very successful and they
already have cash. This will just

improve the TIF district, add more

increment after the fact," Raymonds
said.
Raymonds said that in TIF 5, the village did sewer work in the area.
However, the parcel where Wagner will
be located was left out of the sewer
work, as the company that was there
had their own plans which didn't occur.
The land has since been subdivided, and
the work to be done by Wagner would
cost less than if the village did the
improvements.
