Papermaking at the

Ilkley Literature Festival

by Jonathan Korejko

These two half-day workshops were full of interesting, exciting and

hard working students! We celebrated poetry, prose and verse,
delving briefly into the history, techniques, methods and recipes
used in hand papermaking. This involved learning about famous
authors and their favourite flowers, using words, music, old books
and recycled fibres to make fantastic papers.

We explored the ideas which various authors conveyed in their

work, for example, Charles Dickens, who wrote about Oliver Twist,
oakum, and stolen silk scarves. These things were incorporated
into our handmade paper, which became a visual and allegorical
representation of the author's composition.

The handmade paper now tells that story...

Roses

Shakespeare often referred

to roses in his work,
Wordsworth wrote a poem
about daffodils,
Robert Graves wrote one
about marigolds,

Daffodils

and Tennyson pondered the

nature of weeds, so his
paper was made with
dandelion petals !

The Clark Foley Centre, Ilkley

was an excellent venue for the
event. We ran four vats with a
different recipe in each one.
Participants quickly became
proficient in forming and
couching their handmade
papers.

Rachel Feldberg, Festival Director, visited the busy workshop and

couldnt wait to get her hands wet ! Here she is, making a piece
of Dew * paper, to take home and put in the festivals archives.

* Simon Armitage, well known in
Ilkley for the Stanza Stones poems ,
wrote a piece in his collection
entitled Dew. In it, he refers to
bulrush and reed. So we made
paper to pay homage to his
observations on Ilkley Moor.

The Ilkley Collection !

Papermaking and Literature Blend Well Together.
People who attend festivals enjoy books, stories, words and
ideas, and they delight in finding
new ways to represent them.

My aim is to remind everyone that without paper,

there would be no great literature !
