inconsistent it creates unstable foundations for communication
and student structuring. Parent involvement does not begin and
end at the classroom door, the way in which parents interact and
are involved with their kids after school hours is extremely
important to the student

Assessment Practices

Introduction
(240 words)

The Key things I learned about

assessment from this project:
The parent as a consumer is the
increasing trend that parents are able to
shop around and have multiple schools
even different types of schools to send
their children too. Within the New
paradigm there is an increase in
individual learning and a greater
understanding that each student learns at
a different pace. Parents can start to
place a lot of expectations on teacher to
individualize each lesson for each student
and expecting the best learning
opportunity for their child.
Old paradigm did not encourage parent
involvement during class time and
students were not expected to bring

Assessments
a) Parents must feel
as though your
assessments as a
teacher are fair
for their child.

b) As a teacher it is
our responsibility
to build a healthy
relationship with
students parents.

classwork home with them. However it is

now apparent that Parental involvement
with school work in the home can bridge
gaps in learning that a student faces in
the classroom
Being able to connect the outside world
to the lessons inside the classroom allows
a greater transfer of learning. (Transfer is
greatly benefitted by parent involvement)
o School learning should be
authentic and connected to the
world outside of school not only to
make learning more interesting and
motivating to students but also to
develop the ability to use
knowledge in real-world settings.
(Shepard, 4).
Parental attitudes and actions during
classroom involvement can positively or
negatively impact students.
Overwhelming parents or Helicopter
Parents cause extra pressures and can
create more stress in a childs
environment. Parents who do not put
enough effort into their childs education
lower their opportunity for transfer to
occur.
The aspects of the research I completed
for this project that challenge/affirm my
understandings about assessments are:
As teachers it will be equally important to
complete and treat formative styles of
assessments as equal to summative
assessments and to use a variety of both
techniques to provide reliability to my
assessments.
To make sure my assessments are
reliable I feel it is fairer to give students
multiple times to express their learning.
As well take into account the emotional
attitudes of the students. This will help
reduce Random Error. Random error is
error that influences assessment results
but is not easily predicted or controlled.
(Gareis & Grant, 38). Such as a bad
nights sleep or recent arguments at
home.

your students.

c) You cannot assess

what happens at
home but parents
can be a helpful
tool in
understanding a
students
behavior.

a) Am I as a teacher
providing a
enough
opportunities that
are valid to the
content the
students are
learning as well
as reliable to the
way in which I
teach?

b) Understand that

it is OK to take

Students might not have an equal

learning opportunity at home, keep this
into consideration when assigning and
marking homework. It is important to
create a happy and open environment
within my classroom so that any negative
features from home can be assessed.
Take into consideration socioeconomic
status of your students; make sure each
student has an equal opportunity to have
a full learning experience. Be considerate
of cultural
backgrounds and the languages that a
student uses in the home.

The value of this learning for the

ongoing development of my personal
theory of teaching and learning is:
I really liked the group that presented on
the No Zero policy as well as the
numeric grading. These concepts have
really made me consider what type of
teacher I would like to be. As well as to
understand what is important about
teaching and that is the students
learning. It does not matter if students do
not understand a concept right away with
guidance inside and out of the classroom
all students have the potential to reach
that ah-ha moment. Applying a low
letter grade or a zero to a student could
discourage them from trying harder.

extra measures

occur.

a) This really makes

me question how
I will feel as a
teacher about 0s.

With these resources being digital I am not

capable to use them throughout my PS I.

Lesson Reflections:
What went well:
- Working in a group; able to meet up several times
What can be improved upon:
- Finding resources that went along with Parents & Assessment
- Also finding disadvantages of parental involvement; most researchers agree with
the new paradigm of teaching and promote parents in the classroom as well as
classwork outside the classroom.
Describe how students met your lesson objectives:
- Through the use of parent involvement I will be able to gather a better formative
assessment of my students. This assessment made daily will provide a reliable

and valid form of assessment that will help me address students learning needs
and struggles.
