Read the sentences   

If we come back the same day, the train will be cheaper. If we took the car, we would have the problem of where to park. If the students had listened to the teacher¶s words, they wouldn¶t have failed the examination.

Form
Type 1  If + Present Simple + Future Type 2  If + Past Simple + Conditional Type 3  If + Past Perfect + Perfect Conditional

Use
Type 1 Type 2 Type 3 

Possible future action Something unreal or imaginary Hypothetical and impossible actions / situations in the past; describing things that did not happen
A sentence with if has an if-clause and a main clause. The if-clause usually comes first, but it can come after the main clause. A comma is more usual when the if-clause comes first.
