Generating Electricity Form Coal

Coal is a natural unrenewable resource found underground when mining. It is a fossil fuel that is the remains of animals, plants and other living creatures that lived long time ago in

remove the topsoil

If they are doing surface
mining, the explosives will
need to remove the thin layer
of overburden over the coal

Mining is the process of gathering
minerals by digging deep.
The Benefits of Coal:
What is Surface Mining?
But if they are doing
underground mining,
they keep digging
though the
overburden until the
coal is found. Then,
the coal is mined.
Surface mining is the process of
mining that could be used to mine
coal when the coal is no more than
200ft underground. Sometimes,
explosive is used to remove the
layers of soil and overburden over the
coal.
Produces a lot of energy and according to
the U.S. Department of Energy, coal
produces more than half of the U.S.’s
energy. The U.S. also has one-quarter of the
world’s coal reserves.
The Problems of Coal:
Mining Coal disturbs all living
organisms and the ecosystem.

Underground mining have to be used
when coal is located several hundred
feet underground. Also in
underground mining, miners use
elevators to go up and down the
mineshaft.
It causes water pollution. The water
pollution could affect the animals that live in
the water and the ones that don’t live in the
water. Water that is used in the process of
cleaning and other things that relate with
coal also could affect to the human that
drink it as well.
It also causes air pollution. To produce
energy, coal has to be burned. But when
they do that, it causes air pollution. The
chemicals that are released include CO2,
mercury compounds, sulfur dioxide and
nitrogen oxides.

After they finished mining, the area is
returned back to what is supposed to be and
also the land is fertilized as well.
Burning Coal causes a lot of
pollution. (Fig 2)

What might happen if the world uses coal as a primary resource for electricity?
Fig.
Many coals are made of carbon but it also features other elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur and nitrogen. If is a different type of coal, it makes
different amounts of carbon. Lignite contains only around 60 to 75%, while anthracite contains more than 92%. Very many coals are burned to create
electricity and heat. The use of coal is increasing every year in 2006 the world consumed over 6,000,000,000,000 kilograms of coal. If we always use
coal to make electricity, then we will have to do mining. But after mining and burning the coal, there will be so many bad effects. For example, if we burn
the coal, then it will include acid rains, contaminated water, poisonous emissions, high level of carbon dioxide, and increased risks of lung cancer for coal
plant workers.
If the whole world uses coal for electricity, then there will be many bad cases. There are two main ingredients of coal and they are particulate and sulfur
dioxide. There are very many bad cases by using coal, like having respiratory disease every year, and also causing 500,000 cases of premature death.
China and India is having new pollutions levels because of coal. Actually they are at a same level that London had during the famous ‘fog’ that killed 4000
people in 1952. The black lung disease is among workers who are stuck in the industry, not to mention the horror of occasional “cave in” where people
are buried alive.
Coal generates 44% of our electricity, but is also the single biggest air polluter in U.S. Burning coal causes air pollution, smog, soot, acid rain, global
warming and toxic air emissions Wastes generated because of coal ash sludge toxic chemical and waste heat creates more environmental problems
