Boats for Batman
In the city of Gotham, the Joker has taken over and will only allow one boat to the leave the city.
Batman has asked you to create a boat that can rescue the most citizens without sinking. However, the
Joker will not wait long! You quickly decide to test your design by using aluminum foil to make your
model boat and pennies to represent people. You will compare your results with your group members
and determine the design that will transport the most people so that Batman can save the remaining
citizens of Gotham City.

Part A: Design a Boat!
1) State the experimental problem that Batman has given you.

2) Think about the characteristics and shape of your boat and how it can save the most people. Draw a
sketch of your boat’s shape in the space below. Provide a top view that shows what it looks like from
above and a profile view that shows what it looks like from the side.

3) Create a hypothesis that reflects the design of your boat:

then..._____________________________________________________________________________

4) What was the inspiration for the design choices you made? Why did you decide upon those
choices?

Part B: We’re on a Boat!
You have a design, and just like Batman, you’ll have to test your ideas and see how it works.
1) Make your model boat and share it with your group members. Sketch your group member’s designs.

2) Test your designs and record the data.

3) Show your results by creating a graph that best represents your data in the space below.

4) State your conclusion about your boat design. Think about the design choices you made and
compare them to your results. If possible, what can you do next time to improve your boat design?
