LA RUTINA DIARIA & LOS VERBOS REFLEXIVOS

WHAT IS A REFLEXIVE VERB?
Reflexive verbs are verbs that _______________________________________.
The person ____________ the action also ____________ the action.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN THE VERB IS REFLEXIVE?

When the letters _____ are attached to the end of a verb, it means that it is reflexive.

You’ve actually used reflexive verbs before… even from the first day of Spanish class. Each
time you answer the question, ¿Como te llamas? (What is your name?) and responded with
Me llamo (My name is…) you were actually using the reflexive verb ______________.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT REFLEXIVE VERBS?

In Spanish, these verbs need an extra part that comes _________ the conjugated verb. This is
called the ___________________ ________________.

In other words, in Spanish, when you talk about an action being performed on yourself or
someone else, you use a reflexive ____________ and a reflexive ______________.

CONFUSED?! THAT’S OKAY…. HERE IS ANOTHER WAY TO THINK ABOUT IT…

In English we say: “I wake up. I get out of bed and go to the bathroom. In the bathroom I
wash my face…” THINK about it – Who does the action? Who receives the action?
In English we COULD say: “I wake ___________ up. I get ___________ out of bed and go to
the bathroom. I ___________ wash my face…”
But we don’t! Why? Because it’s implied that when you say: “I wash my face” you’re doing it to
yourself. In SPANISH, we actually say this:
“Me lavo la cara.”
Literally: ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________

Read the following sentences. What do you notice?

Ducharse: Yo me ducho.
Relajarse: Tú te relajas.
Acostarse: Él se acuesta. Ella se acuesta.
Levantarse: Nosotros nos levantamos.
Maquillarse: Las chicas se maquillan.

When I say “I” do an action to/for MYSELF

When I say “YOU” do an action to/for YOURSELF
When I say “HE, SHE, YOU FORMAL” does an action for HIM/HERSELF
When I say “WE” do an action to/for OURSELVES:
When I say “THEY” do an action to/for THEMSELVES:
