Abstract:
InourlabreportwestudiedPhantomTextSyndromeandPhantomVibration
Syndromeatourschool.Weweremotivatedtolearnaboutitbecauseoneofthegroup
membershaditandaswetalkedmoreaboutitmoreandmorepeoplecameforward
thattheyhadittoo.Thequestionweendedupexperimentingwaswhatpercentageof
Animasstudentsexperienceeitherphantomvibrationsyndromeorphantomtext
syndrome?Whydowethinkthisoccurs?Ourresultswerethat54%ofstudentshave
PTSand74%ofstudentshavePVS.Wealsoaskedhowoftentheygetitand43%of
kidsgetPVSonceaweekand38%ofkidsgetPTSaweek.Fromourdatawecould
concludethatPVSismorecommonandhappensmorefrequentlythanPTS.

Introduction:
OurgroupisdoingthisprojecttolearnaboutPhantomVibrationSyndromeand
howcommonitisatAnimas.PhantomVibrationSyndromeiswhenyouyouhereatext
toneortextvibrationwhenyoudidntreceiveatext.Wewereinspiredtolearnabout
thisbecauseourgenerationisobsessedwithtechnology,specificallyourphones.We
wantedtolearnhowtechnologyisaffectingus.Phantomtextsyndromeiswhenyou
hearatexttonebutreceivenotext.PhantomVibrationSyndromeiswhenyoufeela
vibrationfromaphonebutdontgetatext.AccordingtoMentalhealthdaily.com
the
brainbecomessoconditionedtohearingfrequentringsorvibrations,thatthesame
neuralpathwaysactivatedwhenitactuallyisringingfalselyburstwithactivityeven
whenitisnt.
Thesesyndromearebecomingmoreandmorecommonwiththegrowing
useofphones.InonestudydonebyDr.MichelleDrouin,ofPurdueUniversity,89%of
testsubjectshadthis.

QuestionandHypothesis:
WhatpercentageofAnimasstudentsexperienceeitherphantomvibration
syndromeorphantomtextsyndrome?Whydowethinkitoccurs?

Ifoutof100peoplenowadays96havecellphonesthenwethinkthat90%of
kidswillhavePhantomVibrationSyndromebecausemostkidsusetheirphonesso
muchthattheyarestartingtogetPVS.Wethinkthisoccursbecausewhenyouhear

yourphonegooffyoufeelneededsoyourbrainistryingtoovercompensatewhenyour
phoneisntgoingoff.

MethodsandMaterials:
Wewillsendoutasurveyto50randomstudentsandteachersatAnimasasking
howmanyofthemexperiencephantomtext/vibrationsyndrome.Wewillalsoask
wheretheykeeptheirphoneduringthedayandhowoftenthesephenomenonoccur.
Thenwewillformaconclusionbasedontheseresults.Theotherfactorsthatwillaffect
ourprojectsiswherepeopleexperiencethevibration,likeintheirpocketorpurse.We
willcollectdataonifpeoplehavePTS/PVSandalsowhereandwhentheyexperience
PVS.Ourmethodwillbetomakeasurveytoask50randomstudentsandteachersif
theyexperiencephantomvibrationsyndromeorPhantomTextSyndrome.Thenwewill
findthepercentageofstudents/teacherswhohavePTS/PVSandstudents/teacherwho
dont.Lastly,wewillmakeaninfographicwithourdata.

Results:

Atrendwefoundwithourdatawaswherepeoplekeeptheirphonesthatis
usuallywheretheyaremostlikelytoexperiencePVS.

Discussion:
Ourresultsstatethat54%ofstudentsatAnimashavePhantomTextSyndrome
and74%havePhantomVibrationSyndrome.Oneobservationwemadefromthese
resultsisthat70.2%ofstudents/facultycarrytheirphonesintheirpocketswhile69.6%
ofkidsfeelPVSintheirpockets.Basedonotherresultswecancometotheconclusion
thatyouwillmostlikelygetPVSwhereyoukeepyourphoneonyouthemost.Our
questionandhypothesisaskedwhatpercentageofAnimasstudentsexperienceeither
PhantomVibrationSyndromeorPhantomtextSyndrome?Whydowethinkitoccurs?If
outof100peoplenowadays96havecellphonesthenwethinkthat90%ofkidswill
havePhantomVibrationSyndromeandPhantomTestSyndromebecausemostkids
usetheirphonessomuchthattheyarestartingtogetPVSandPTS.Wethinkthis
occursbecausewhenyouhearyourphonegooffyoufeelneededsoyourbrainis
tryingtoovercompensatewhenyourphoneisntgoingoff.Ourhypothesiswas
incorrectonly54%ofstudentshadPTSand74%hadPVS.Theimportanceofour
resultshowhowtechnologyisreallyaffectingusinanegativeway.Fromourdatawe
couldalsoconcludethatPVSismorecommonandhappensmorefrequentlythanPTS.
WedidthisexperimentbecausesomeofourgroupmembershadPVS/PTS,sowe
wantedtounderstanditmore.Additionally,ittiesintothethemeofhowtechnologyis
affectingus.

Someotherimportantdatawefoundwasthat70.2%ofstudentsatAnimaskeep
theirphonesintheirpocketdespitetherulethatphonesshouldbeoffandinyour
backpack.Also,6.4%ofstudentscarrytheirphonesintheirhands.Oddlyenough,2.2%
ofstudentsfeelthephantomvibrationintheirshoe.

Weareveryconfidentinourresultsbecausewefollowedastrictcontrolled
procedure.Forexamplewewantedtofindarandomsetoftestsubjects
(students/facultyatAHS)sowedecidedthebestwaytofindrandompeoplewasformy
grouptosaythefirstrandom50kidsthattheycouldthinkoftosendoutoursurveyto.
WhileworkingonthisprojectIthinkthebiggestimprovementwecouldhavemadewas
oursurvey.Weshouldhaveaskedaquestionabouthowtheirmoodiswhenthey
receiveeitherPVSorPTStoseeiftheyareonlyhavingthisphenomenontotryand
releasemoredopaminetoimprovethetestsubjectsmood.Furthermore,weshould
havehadabetterunderstandingofthetechnologythatwewereusing.Wehadsome
troublewithgoogleforms.
