Who We Are
Central Idea: Relationships within groups change and grow.
Unit 2 of 4

Communication and Language


Listens to others one to one or in small groups, when conversation interests
them.
Responds to simple instructions.
Can retell a simple past event in correct order.
Uses talk to connect ideas, explain what is happening and anticipate what might
happen next, recall and relive past experiences.
Uses talk in pretending that objects stand for something else in play.

Literacy
Enjoys rhyming and rhythmic activities.
Listens to and joins in with stories and poems, one to one and also in small
groups.
Knows that print carries meaning and, in English, is read from left to right and
top to bottom.
Beginning to be aware of the way stories are structured.
Sometimes gives meaning to marks as they draw and paint.
Mathematics
Uses some number names and number language spontaneously.
Knows that numbers identify how many objects are in a set.
Shows an interest in representing numbers.
Shows interest in shapes in the environment.

Understanding the World


Recognizes and describes special times or events for family or friends.
Shows interest in the lives of people who are familiar to them.
Knows some of the things that make them unique, and can talk about some of
the similarities and differences in relation to friends or family.
Comments and asks questions about aspects of their familiar world such as the
place where they live or the natural world.

STEM
Students will use the class camera to take pictures of each other while playing. They
will learn how to zoom in and out of pictures. They will then learn how we upload
pictures to the computer.
Students will make houses/buildings and build a community.
Students will make friendship fruit salad.

Personal and Social Development


Can play in a group, extending and elaborating play ideas.
Initiates play, offering cues to peers to join them.
Keeps play going by responding to what others are saying or doing.
Demonstrates friendly behavior, initiating conversations and forming good
relationships with peers and familiar adults.

Expressive Arts & Design


Sings a few familiar songs.
Notices what adults do, imitating what is observed and then doing it
spontaneously when the adult is not there.
Engages in imaginative role-play based on own first-hand experiences.
Uses available resources to create props to support role play.
Captures experiences and responses with a range of media.

Spanish & Mandarin


Show understanding of basic simple questions related to the Units of Inquiry.
Greet each other, repeat very short phrases.
Seasons, weather, clothing, family and rooms in the house.

Physical Development
Draws lines and circles using gross motor movements.
Holds pencil between thumb and two fingers, no longer using whole-hand grasp.
Can copy some letters, e.g. letters from their name.
Dresses with help.
Extending different types of movement, walking, jogging, running and changing
direction.

Participation in team games using movement


Drama
Introduces a storyline or narrative into their play.

Initiates new combinations of movement and gesture in order to express and


respond to feelings, ideas and experiences.
Selects appropriate resources and adapts work where necessary.
Music
Moving in rhythm to songs.
Playing simple beats on percussion instruments.
Using storytelling to explore imaginary worlds.
