Musical Concert by Brittany Spahr

Activity Outcome: IEGL D4G47: Children demonstrate understanding and appreciation of creative arts. They will imitate
movement after participating in or watching others perform games, dance, or songs.
Description: This activity involves fine motor skills in the hands (palm grasps) by playing instruments and gross motor
muscles in the arms and legs by dancing. The background will be right behind where the children play the instruments. The
instruments are scattered in the play area. This will give them room to sit and play. Then give them room to dance with the
steamers. The children can get on stage(it can be a mat) to play instruments, sing, dance, and dress up as artists.
Teachers can demonstrate how to use instruments, all they can do in the dramatic play. Children can sing, play various
instruments, and dance with scarves and dress up to sing if they want to. There will be seats for others to watch the show
with room between the stage and chairs for dancing. For children who do not want to participate they can dance or sit and
watch the others. There are a variety of instruments with various levels of use so children can participate with easier
instruments.
Materials needed and how to make them:
Background (paper, title, decoration, scissors, glue)
Shakers (a cup or beans/rice, 2 cups of the same size, hot glue and gun, tape) Put a cup of beans/rice into a cup.
Put hot glue on the rim of the cup. Put the other cups rim on the hot glue. Then tape the outside of the rims.
Guitar- (empty tissue box, 6 rubber bands of different widths) Put rubber bands over the hole on the box. Tape the
rubber bands to the box.
Rhythm sticks- (2 wooden dowels about a foot long) Get two wooden dowels. Make sure ends are filed.
Streamers- (2 wooden dowels, three different colored ribbons, hot glue and gun)Put hot glue on one end of the
dowel. Put on ribbons the dowel by tying it around the dowel where the hot glue is.
Differentiation: The more advanced toddlers can play with instruments and sing at the same time. Teachers can role play
with them. Teachers can have the children who are at an advanced level can play rhythms with the sticks by having the
children play with the teacher. For younger children, the teachers can have them dance with the streamers, and learn how
to play the instruments.
