Materials/
- Athletics Track
Resources
- Bus
- iPad/iPhones
- Books, Pens and Stopwatch
- P.E Uniform
- Water bottle
AusVELS
- MATHS - Calculate and interpret the mean and standard deviation of data and
use these to compare data sets(ACMSP278)
- Evaluate statistical reports in the media and other places by linking claims to
displays, statistics and representative data (ACMSP253)
PE - At Level 10, students demonstrate proficiency in the execution of
manipulative and movement skills during complex activities. They demonstrate
advanced skills in selected physical activities.
Learning Intentions
Students will be able to:
(Written on the board)
- Have a good understanding of the track & field events in athletics
- Perform all skills in an appropriate and safe manner
- Use TimeMotion application to record long distance events
- Record data of field events and short distance track events
Safety Concerns
- Teacher to ensure that each student has appropriate footwear and clothing to
perform all tasks.
- Hair greater than shoulder length tied back
- Students can work in pairs/group (one person doing event/other group
members recording)
- MUST use equipment in a safe and appropriate manner
- When participating in field events make sure area is clear before throwing
objects
- Must return all used equipment

of sustainability)
(What students do)
Students must write down learning intentions. (This allows them to understand what is
expected from todays class)
(Introduces: Sustainability) (What I do) Prior knowledge activity Students to discuss in small groups what skills are required
to sustain knowledge and certain information.
Get students to discuss the important aspects of sustainability and what techniques in
maths they can use to incorporate into real life.
(What students do)
After students have discussed in small groups their concepts of sustainability and the

mathematics skills that are required for it, they will present their thoughts to the class
Key student responses should be: Measure, monitor, quantify in regards to change
over time.
Observe, record and organize data
(What I do)
Once this has been establish teacher will reiterate that todays lesson will be focusing
on the skills of sustainability learning how to observe, record and organize data to view
results.
(What I do) 10 min
Brief introduction to the athletics track and field events which we will participating in
todays lesson
Students will watch short YouTube videos showing correct procedure for each throwing
field event (discuss, shot put, javelin)
Class as a whole is introduced to each event prior to using equipment independently.
Will also introduce to the class the app TimeMotion and give a step by step
instructional worksheet of how to use it for the necessary events

Shot Put throw (LINK) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZCG4oqmlN8
Javelin throw (LINK) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOAVYEnjo0E
(What students do)
Students who have performed these tasks proficiently in the past will be asked to
demonstrate the correct techniques, with teacher demonstrating technique if students
are unable to. Students will also have 5 minutes to figure out how to use the
TimeMotion app following the step by step guide.
This will get the students involved and engaged in the exercise
Note: Students will also be given a sheet to record results on
(What I do) 2 mins
Explain to the students what the task is for todays lesson and ensure all students
understand the safety measures and rules that are in place. Place students in pairs or
in small groups and handout worksheets for students to record data onto. Pens and
stopwatches will also be provided.
(What students do)
Students get into pairs or small groups and receive necessary equipment and
worksheet. Any questions the students have should be address here before dispersing
(What I do) 25 mins
Ensure that students are at the right event. Provide different weighted equipment to
differentiate learning and performance. Students who are struggling to throw certain
weighted object can move to lower weight object.
Students will perform field events first before completing track events after. Make sure
students are evened out between the field events so there is not a backlog of students
waiting at one event. Once all field events day organize track events, half students
race at once the other half record.
(What students do)
Students will begin at designated field event. Pair/group will complete activity and
partner will record data and then switch roles. Once all field events are completed
students will move to track events.
Note: Students may ask relevant questions at any point and receive relevant feedback.
(What I do) 5 mins
The teacher will assess this class through observation, ensuring students can correctly

perform technique of each event and record relevant feedback, class discussion,
students will answer relevant questions at the end of their lesson to display knowledge
learnt and recorded data. Walk around giving feedback to students to help improve
their performance.
Students may find it difficult to remember all correct techniques and safety procedures,
so it is important to reiterate correct technique to students who are struggling
Extra work: Students are working according to a time frame, so no extra work is
required.
Ensure students have completed all relevant tasks and handed back the recorded
worksheets to teacher.
(What students do) Formative: 2 minutes
Reflect on the athletics track excursion by having a group discussion, focusing on the
exercises done and recorded data and the technique of the skills performed.

TimeMotion Application
The application will help students record data from live or previously
recorded physical activity to generate percentages of the different
categories they are undertaking e.g. standing, walking, running,
sprinting.
1. Open up application and click on the information (i) button on
the top left hand side of the page.
2. Add in name of participant and any category you want to
change then click Done
3. To start recording information click on a category and the
timer will begin.
4. To pause timer tap once on the Stop button which will then
change to Paused. To continue recording either tap on the
Paused button or on one of the categories across the bottom.
5. To stop recording double-tap on the Stop button.
6. Once stopped you can share/save your results by tapping on
Share. Sharing by email or Twitter will create a screenshot to
your iPhone/iPad.
