Case Study-The visitation to Colva Prison

The book Trash is based in a Fictional city called Behala, Minali in the Philippines
and is known as trash-city. Poverty and discrimination are highly common issues
happening currently in Behala to many innocent people which displays that
behaviour needs to be improved and changed for the better. The significant event in
the story I have chosen to write and interpret is the visitation of Gabriel Olondriz at
Colva prision. Displaying the physical poverty, corruption and injustices. Colva
prison should not be treating their casualties in this manner (Olivias perspective),
many alternatives should be raised and appointed.

The characters Gardo and Olivia visited the Colva Prision in order to find Gabriel
Olondriz to meet him and ask a few questions about Jos Angelico. Olivia describes
the prison as cages you might put lions and tigers in an old fashioned zoo. The
heat was impeccably unbearable and the size of the jail was small and crammed. I
looked up and saw cages stacked high up and across this explains that the lifestyle
of those in the prison was very poor and the people were not treated with any
curtesy or respect. This is clearly not how humans should be treated; locked up in a
cage with no proper health care or nutritious healthy food or water. When Gardo
and Olivia found the prisoner she was quite confused as the prisoner didnt know
Gardo. Gardo had told Olivia that Gabriel Olondriz was his grandfather. However he
had no relations to Gardo whatsoever prisoner. Gardo had clearly lied and bribed
Sister Olivia to come with him to see Gabriel Olondriz. When Olivia was asking
questions to Gabriel about himself and his house he stated he had no money, no
house and no family. As he had drawn exploitation charges against Senator Regis
Zapanta thirty five years ago. This evidently clarifies corruption and fraud quite
visibly.

The UN declaration promotes the rights of clean water, food, health care and a
hygienic environment so that children will stay healthy. This relates very much to
the scene where Sister Olivia is walking past the cells when a child begs for clean
water as they are dehydrated and thirsty. Sister Olivia states People were shouting
out for water. This expresses how poorly treated these children and adults were
maltreated inside the jail. Every person should have access to water and food no
matter what the circumstance. We now can understand why Sister Olivia explains
herself as being provoked and confused. Its not often that we will experience
something as traumatising and heartening as this. The occasion for both Sister
Olivia and Gardo was interesting and captivating as they both learnt many things
they had both not known about such as the conditions of the cells, the life of Gabriel
Olondriz and how lucky they were not to be in jail.

To conclude you can clearly identify the three main issues in this event including
corruption, injustice and poverty and how they are significantly inappropriate issues

and are not handled correctly. There are many ways we can fight poverty and beat
the vicious cycle of corruption as they are both important issues that are mentioned
more recurrent than needed.
