Reflection
11/12/15
For someone who did not attend the Student Financial Planning Association
In addition to showing what Dalton has to offer for students planning to take
the
CFP
exam,
they
also
discussed
a
difficult
ethics
question
that
could
potentially
come
up
on
the
exam
or
in
practice.
The
clients
involved
in
the
question
were
a
married
couple,
and
the
wife
had
divulged
information
to
the
CFP
in
confidence
because
she
did
not
want
her
husband
to
know
about
it.
Given
this
information,
the
question
was:
Should
the
CFP
respect
the
confidentiality
between
her
and
the
wife,
or
should
the
CFP
disclose
this
information
to
the
husband?
Initially,
I
thought
that
the
CFP
would
be
required
to
respect
the
wifes
confidentiality,
but
a
husband
and
wife
are
typically
presumed
to
be
one
economic
unit,
which
results
in
the
CFP
serving
the
couple
as
one
client
rather
than
two
individual
clients.
Therefore,
the
laws
of
confidentiality
are
not
applicable.
The
CFP
should
disclose
the
information
to
the
husband
in
order
to
avoid
the
possibility
of
being
sued
by
the
husband
later
on.
