Dalton Education Reflection
11/12/15

For someone who did not attend the Student Financial Planning Association

meeting to hear Daltons presentation on preparing for the Certified Financial

Planning exam, the experience can be described as highly informative. During their
presentation, Dalton displayed the highly successful procedure through which they
prepare their students for the CFP exam. The procedure that they follow can be
narrowed down to a more simplified process that Dalton refers to as the Pathway
to Success. The Pathway to Success consists of spending 100125 hours on the pre-
study books supplied by Dalton, 8 hours on Daltons live online office hours, 20-25
hours on the pre-study lectures presented by Dalton, 36 hours on the review
lectures provided by Dalton, 60 hours on a CFP test bank supplied by Dalton, and 4
hours on the post-review question and answer sessions put on by Dalton. In order
to effectively follow this pathway to success, a student must dedicate approximately
250 hours of time to their studies for the CFP exam.

In addition to showing what Dalton has to offer for students planning to take

the CFP exam, they also discussed a difficult ethics question that could potentially
come up on the exam or in practice. The clients involved in the question were a
married couple, and the wife had divulged information to the CFP in confidence
because she did not want her husband to know about it. Given this information, the
question was: Should the CFP respect the confidentiality between her and the wife,

or should the CFP disclose this information to the husband? Initially, I thought that
the CFP would be required to respect the wifes confidentiality, but a husband and
wife are typically presumed to be one economic unit, which results in the CFP
serving the couple as one client rather than two individual clients. Therefore, the
laws of confidentiality are not applicable. The CFP should disclose the information
to the husband in order to avoid the possibility of being sued by the husband later
on.

All in all, Dalton shared an abundance of valuable information with the

Student Financial Planning Association through their presentation. In addition to

being asked to speak again next year, I would suggest that Dalton be asked to speak
with the SFPA every year.
