Case Presentation

By: Shakeanma McDougald

Background Information:
Client is a 13 year old Caucasian female. The client
was removed due to an incident of domestic
violence which was reported to the police, but when
the police got there drugs were found in the home.
The mother is an addict, and is currently in
recovery. This led to the removal of the client from
her home. This girl is very promiscuous when it
comes to any boy she comes in contact with. Her
grades are failing, and IFCCS (Intensive Foster Care
& Clinical Services) has intervened to determine the
most beneficial way to get her treatment so she can
reunited with her mother. The child is on ADHS
medication, but she says it is not helping so the
doctor has recently increased her dosage. When we
are asking her questions she laughs at everything
and doesnt appear to take anything seriously .

Problem Statement:
The client needs intervention to keep her focused
on school work, and keep her from having outbursts
of anger. We also need to figure out what other
issues she may be dealing with which causes her to
be so promiscuous.

Services:
Upon closer examination the IFCCS worker decided
client needs counseling. She is currently in therapy
through the REAL service provider.
She is also receiving Behavior Modification: Meaning
she will benefit from rehabilitative behavioral health
services to alter behaviors that are inappropriate or
undesirable and modeling of appropriate behaviors
in order to enhance his or her functioning within
their home or community.
She will have someone who will come into the home
to provide her with these services for a certain
amount of hours weekly.

Strengths & Limitations:

Strengths
Foster parent stated she
can be very loving when
she wants to be.
She likes her foster care
placement.
She wants to do better in
school because she
doesnt want to be viewed
as dumb by her
classmates.

Limitations
She has anger issues, and
lashes out when anyone
says something to her.
She is very disrespectful to
authority figures.
She does not like to listen
to what others tell her to
do.

Assessment Goals:
Assessment goals are to determine the most
appropriate method of intervention to help her stay
focused in school and control her anger which leads
to disruptive behavior in all aspects of her life.

Specific Interventions:
Behavior modification will begin with the client
immediately in conjunction with professional
counseling.
IFCCS will monitor client and reassess her
progression through continuous contact with
counseling service provider and behavior
modification personnel.

Biases:
Will she listen to what we have to say considering
she is very defiant against authority figures.

Value Differences:
I dont agree with being disrespectful to those who
are trying to help you.
I dont agree with being involved with boys at such
a young age.

Life Experiences:
Her mother has exposed her to violent behavior in
the home, and it appears she has conveyed this
mentality over to all areas of her life.
Children live what they see, and see what they
live

Staff Recommendations:
Diagnosis
After staffing the
case with the
supervisor of IFCCS,
the staff agree with
the diagnosis of the
client.

Interventions/Treatment

Upon closer
examination, the
interventions and
treatment
implemented for
the client appears
to be substantial.

Research & Diagnosis/Treatment:

This client is acting out or living what she has
witnessed over the years in her environment so the
person in environment perspective is the most
suitable perspective to view for this particular case.
According to Kondrat (2015), this perspective is
based on the notion that an individual and his or her
behavior cannot be understood adequately without
consideration of the various aspects of that
individuals environment (social, political, familial,
temporal, spiritual, economic, and physical).

Cont..
A person-in-environment perspective is said to
provide a more adequate framework for assessing
an individual and his or her presenting problem and
strengths than an approach that focuses solely on
changing an individuals behavior or psyche, or one
that focuses solely on environmental conditions.
This perspective is also thought to increase the
range of interventions available to the practitioner
with the options to intervene directly with the
individual or into aspects of the environment or
both. The person-in-environment perspective has
been accepted by the profession as uniquely
defining and differentiating social work from related
professions/disciplines, such as psychology (more
person centered) and sociology (more structurally
oriented).
