Sports in the USA

Americans love sports. The average American watches more than ten hours of sports-related television
shows per week. 44% of households in the USA watch the Super Bowl. 70 million people go to
professional baseball games every year.

But looking for the remote control or waiting in line to buy tickets aren’t people’s only forms of exercise!
Lots of people are adopting healthier habits. Around 28% of adults in the USA say they participate in
organized sports regularly. About 40% do strenuous exercise at least three times a week, and more and
more people work out in health clubs every day. Children are also involved: for example, 19 million
children in the USA play in soccer leagues. However, a lot of people probably should do more exercise;
33% of Americans are overweight.

Generation EA
a Read the first two paragraphs of the article and answer the
questions.
What does EA mean? It means “ethnically ambiguous.”
Why don’t the old race labels work any more?
b Read paragraph three.
What’s going to happen in the next decade?

c Read paragraph four.

Complete the definition. A “wigga” is
d Read paragraph five.
Is Beyoncé’s hair naturally blonde?
e Read paragraph six.
Do you agree with the conclusions?
Is your generation EA?
Are there many mixed race students in your school?

Do you know any wiggas?

Forget black, forget white. EA is what’s hot!

1 EA means “ethnically ambiguous” and describes a new generation.
2 If you talk to many young people today, it soon becomes clear that they don’t think much about
race or color. Mario, a student from Miami, says: “Black and white people interact so much that we
have lost the distinction.” Rachel, a young nurse from Los Angeles, agrees. “Trying to define people
by the old race labels doesn’t work any more. Look at the people around you. We are the new
blended youth.”
3 Mario and Rachel and millions like them are part of a new group called Generation Ethnically
Ambiguous (generation EA for short). It reflects the demographic reality of countries like the United
States and Britain. In the last census, seven million Americans identified themselves as members of
more than one race, or members of “no race.” In ten years, “mixed race” is going to become the
biggest ethnic minority group.
4 White teenagers are adopting black lifestyles and culture in fashion, looks, music, sports and
language. Black urban culture has become everybody’s culture, says journalist Paul McKenzie. It
represents the triumph of the black community. In the past, a young white person who copied black
style was sometimes called a “wigga,” a negative term back then. Now wiggas are every place. The
extremely cool Justine Timberlake and Eminem are famous wiggas.
5 EA is very hot now. Beyoncé, a black American, dyes her hair blonde, Cristina Aguilera
accentuates her Latin American roots with her black hair, and multiracial bands like the Sugarbabes
are more popular every day.
6 The barriers between black and white are disappearing. People don’t make a distinction now
because the distinction isn’t there—culturally and sometimes even physically!, concludes Nick
Leader. We are the new mix. We are the remix generation.

George Eliot was an English novelist in the

a All her other books were successful, too.

The most famous are The Mill on the Floss,
Silas Marner and the book some people

She never stopped reading and educating
herself. She learned German and Italian, too.

c She was born in 1819 in Warwickshire, England. She was the youngest of five children. She had
two brothers and two sisters. 1
d Well, it was very unusual for women to be educated at all in those days. Most girls never went
to school, and it was very difficult for women to be writers. So, she used a man’s name and
became one of the best writers, male or female, of all time.
e Her favorite brother was Isaac. In one of her novels, she wrote about a brother and sister who
are a lot like her and Isaac.

she should be a writer. She started writing short stories and then her first novel, Adam Bede,

Point Break Action in the air and on the waves—this movie has it all. The acting isn’t great, and
maybe it’s all a little unrealistic, but it’s nonstop action from start to finish. It’s also good to see
these two actors together—what a team! If you like surfing, skydiving and other wild sports—
and you like a good detective story, too—this is a movie you must see! $$$$

the one-liners, the international bad guys, big shoot-outs, etc. The tension never reaches the levels

old stuff, you can always look at the magnificent scenery! $$$

a gun—4,000 meters above the ground. Night was coming and a breeze was blowing Larry out to
sea while a helicopter was following him.
b _____ Larry tied the balloons to a chair and filled them with helium. He was filling the balloons

Then, one day, while he was watching the sky, Larry had an idea. He went to a store and bought
forty-five weather balloons and some helium.
d _____ The police were waiting for Larry when he landed. As they were leading him away, Larry
said to the reporters: “A man can't just sit around?”
e _____ So, he cut the rope that kept the balloons down. He found himself shooting up into the sky
very, very quickly! The floating chair was climbing higher and higher. Larry was nervous. He was
thinking about shooting the balloons, but he didn’t want to come down as quickly as he went up!

Eco-houses: learn to live with nature

a _______
4 We want homeowners to learn about nature. As consumers, we have a relationship with
plants and we depend on them. The way we treat and use plants is the story of the planet. Much

constructions to protect them.
c _______ You’ll experience the sights and smells of a hot and humid rainforest in your greenhouse

aromas and fragrances ... and are great to use in the kitchen!

TH
Aesop was a storyteller in Greece in the 7 Century B.C. His stories—called fables—are all very
simple, but each one has a moral. Even today, two thousand years after he died, Aesop’s fables can
teach us important lessons.
a _______ Once upon a time, there was a tortoise and a hare. As everyone knows, the tortoise is
a very slow animal, one of the slowest. The hare, on the other hand, is one of the fastest.
b _______ But the hare was not only very fast. He was also very proud. He said to the tortoise,
“You’re so slow. You take much longer to do everything. I’m much quicker than you!”
c _______ “And my legs and ears are longer,” continued the hare. “In fact, I’m much more handsome
and cleverer than you.”
d _______ In his very gentle, calm way, the tortoise said, “Well, it’s true your legs and ears are longer,
but if we race, I can win.”
e _______ “You! Win?!” The hare laughed. He was very rude. He thought he was the best animal
in the whole animal kingdom.
f _______ The hare ran so quickly he was soon far ahead of the tortoise, who was walking slowly
behind. So the hare stopped for a rest under a tree ... where he fell asleep!
g _______ Well, while the hare was sleeping—and he slept much longer than he thought—the slow
and steady tortoise just kept walking, slowly but surely.
h _______ When the hare woke up and realized what had happened, he ran as fast as he could.
But it was too late. The tortoise was already there at the finishing line, resting and calmly
waiting for him.

2 Mark () the moral you think is best for the fable.
a Not all the stories you hear are true.
b A small friend may be a very important friend.
c Don’t trust someone who says he/she is perfect.
d Sometimes it’s better to be slow and consistent.

The Top Ten pets in the USA are:
a parakeet ____
1 2 3
b fish ____
c cat ____
d dog ____
e rabbit ____
f hamster ____ 4 5 6

Household pets are common in America, Europe, and Asia.

In the USA, dogs are favorites. A survey in 2004 found that 63% of the American
households have dogs and 35% have cats. Fish, birds, turtles and small animals like
rabbits and hamsters are also favorites.
The British are especially fond of pets. Half of all the households in England have a pet,
usually a cat or bird.
But what do people from other countries think about pets?
Australian Aborigines capture dingo (wild dog) puppies and raise them for a time before
letting them go.
In China and Hong Kong, cats are thought to bring good luck and are kept in stores as
well as homes.
The Japanese keep birds and crickets as pets.
The Italians aren’t crazy about dogs but think cats make good companions.
The Inuit Eskimo of northern Canada adopt bear cubs, foxes, birds, and baby seals.
But animals are rarely kept as pets in Africa.
