Objectives: The student will:
Use matrices to represent and manipulate data
Multiply matrices by scalars to produce new matrices
Anticipatory Set: 3 minutes
Tell me something good?
o Have students share something good that has happened in the week.
o Share something yourself.

## Independent Practice & Instructional Input: 30 minutes?

Show video of Matrix:
o Give definition of a matrix:
A matrix is a rectangular arrangement of numbers in rows and columns.
For example, a matrix A below has two rows and three columns. The
dimensions of a matrix with m rows and n columns are m n
(read m by n). So, the dimensions of matrix A are 2 3 . The
numbers in a matrix are its elements.

o Give rule for adding and subtracting matrices:
To add or subtract two matrices, simply add or subtract elements in
corresponding positions. You can add or subtract matrices only if they
have the same dimensions.

## Have students do page 4

Set the timer for 3 minutes
Have students share their responses with each other
Have students share their rules

o Have students share their sentences

Page 6
o Give them rule for multiplying a matrix by a scalar:
In matrix algebra, a real number is often called a scalar. To multiply a
matrix by a scalar, you multiply each element in the matrix by the scalar.
This process is called scalar multiplication.
o Conclude the lesson and have them share what they learned

Page 7
o Have students do the conclusion problem.
o When they are done have them turn in and get started on homework.
