JOE MAHLO PROFILE

Leading change and thriving on turnaround mandates are key themes


underscoring Joe Mahlos 30+ year career.
Joes arsenal of international experience, an MBA and key insights in the
deployment of technology to activate performance have been incorporated into
his role as General Manager for Engen Sales & Marketing, a position held since
2012.
Orchestrating the strategy, delivery and growth of the Division and managing the
outcomes with the key contributions of the 1400 people under his stewardship
(responsible for Engens Sales, Marketing, Storage and Distribution) is business
as usual for Joe who has earned his stripes through a steadfast track record.
In 1984 Joe started his working life at BP in clerical roles and incrementally added
weight to his ambitions and experience, moving from Sector Manager and
Reseller Manager to General Manager for Business Development
In 2000 a move to London as BPs Strategy Development Manager, Commercial
& Industrial, for Northern Europe urged his international exposure into the
spotlight, and so too, his ascendancy at BP. In 2004 Joe served as Vice President
for BP Direct Segments focusing on customer acquisition in North America before
returning to South Africa.
His three year tenure from 2005 as General Manager of Air BP, its aviation
division, helped achieve trailblazing outcomes with the development of senior
female appointments in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa and the
achievement of two years of record profitability for Air BP.
By June 2008, Joe was ready for his role as Head of Marketing for BP, based in
Johannesburg, where he applied his deft and determination to the business of
marketing BP across sub-Saharan Africa. BP was repositioned with technology at
the forefront and Joes highly successful 2010 World Cup Campaign, added
further boost for the bottom line.
By 2010 Joe was Head of External Affairs and Communication at BP, successfully
steering the company through the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, with minimal damage
to its reputation. Simultaneously BEE was on the agenda, and Joe positioned the
company for its upgrade to a Level 3 BEEE contributor.
A much-desired sabbatical followed, with Joe pausing for personal focus although
still actively serving as Trustee and Chairman on select boards before his
appointment in 2012 to the Engen fold as General Manager for Sales &
Marketing.
Since his graduation from the University of the North in Pietersburg in 1983 with
a BComm in Accounting and Management Information, the composition of Joes
career has been refined through an MBA at the Wits Business School, a Senior

Executive Programme at Harvard Business School and a Senior Executive


Programme at the Kellogs School of Management.
Joes arsenal of skill acquisition and journey of hard work has enabled him to
transfer his talents to his senior roles. When he does have time off, its nature to
which he turns as a hiker and Honorary Ranger at SANPARKS, as well as a
budding golfer and keen photographer.
