1.3 Anticipatory Set

Good morning third graders! Today we are going to talk about what it means to be a good
citizen. Does anyone know what the word citizenship means? Citizenship is having the qualities
of a responsible member of a community. People who have good citizenship are working
towards making their community a better place to live. What are some ways that we can be
good citizens? (Cleaning up trash, helping our friends, giving money to charity, donating clothes
and toys) Those are some great examples! We will be exploring more into how you, as third
graders, can show citizenship in your communities!
1.4 Procedures
Students will be working in 5 groups, each group having a picture or song that they are
to discuss and answer questions about. Students will have time to work in groups and
then will share as a class and discuss other students thoughts.
Count off students by fives.
Hand each group copies a worksheet, each group getting a different worksheet to go
along with their group.
Students will discuss as a group, come up with their answers, and then on the interactive
whiteboard (SMARTBoard), all the students will view the worksheets. Each group will
present their answers and other students can give their own input.
Students will be given a Promise Statement for being a good citizen. The statement says I
promise to be a good member of my community. Then the students fill out this part of the
statement, These are the ways I will show citizenship:_____ They will sign their name and
write the date.
Ask students to fill out their own Promise Statement and promise to do what their
statement says
Share with students how you as a teacher show good citizenship; fill out a statement
Have students share some of their promises they wrote
Hang up the statements on the wall to remind them of their promises
Ask students to define citizenship in their own words on an idex card and tape it on on a
big poster of a citizen (see picture below for example)
1.5 Differentiation
For Gifted Students: Put students in groups based on their level and have them write a
paragraph describing what the picture/song means to them
For ELL Students: Students will be able to listen to the song in English and their language
1.6 Closure
Students will be shown a video that gives a good example of how kids just like them can give
back to their community and make a difference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=UDe1xuQFwPE
Now that we have seen an example of ways to give back to our community, we are going to
serve our community as well! We will be going on a field trip this week to help those who live
around us. Lets look at our Citizen poster we have on our wall; do we still agree with what we
wrote? Take a moment and think back to what we all learned today. Do you still have the same
thoughts of what citizenship means? Think about the video we just watched. Here is another
index card to write down a different thought that you have now that we have seen good
citizeship in action. All of you are citizens that can make a difference. Even though you are only
one person, that does not mean you cant make a difference in the world. When you look at our

poster and your Promise statements, I want you to remember that. Raise your hand if you can
make a difference in this world! Everyone should be raising their hands! Great job today third
graders!
1.7 Formative/Summative Assessment of Students (P-12)
Formative Assessment: Teacher observation of student participation.
Students' reflections and discussion about the questions to the questions about the pictures and
the songs. Each student will write on an index card what citizen means to them in their own
words and tape in on the poster. Students will fill out a worksheet answering questions that are
based off of the objectives
1.8 Materials/Equipment/Resources
Interactive whiteboard
5 Citizenship worksheets
Promise Statement worksheet
Citizen Kids video
Large paper
Markers
Index cards
1.9 Technology
Pictures and songs will be displayed/played on the interactive hiteboard
Video from youtube will be shown using interactive whiteboard
2.1 Reflection on Planning
It was difficult at first to find a main focus for the idea of citizenship but once I found the pictures
and songs with questions it was easier to work around. Because this was the first lesson I
thought that it was good to start out working in groups and giving students the opportunities to
collaborate with their group members. I really like the idea of
having the students define citienship in their own words and
putting in on a poster to display in the classroom because students
should know that there are many different aspects that make a
person a good citizen; there is not only one definition. I was unsure
about my differentiaiton; what I would really want to do would be
too much for this one lesson, but I would want other students to be
aware of the countries that possible ELL students are from and
share about their culture and their country pride and anthem etc.
Overall, my favorite aspect is the promise statement that would be
posted on the walls, reminding students that they can make a
difference in this world even though they are just one person.
