SPIRITUAL, ALL-PRESENT, &

ALL-KNOWING

Gods Attributes

What makes God

God? Why is He
infinite and we are
not?

SPIRITUAL

JOHN 4:24

God is spirit, and those

who worship him must
worship in spirit and truth.

WHAT IS A SPIRIT?
Greek: (pneuma) a current
of air, that is, breath or a breeze.
Pneumonia ()

Hebrew: ( ruach) wind, breath

SPIRIT IN THE BIBLE

A spirit does not have

flesh and bones.
[Luke 24:39]

BODY AND SPIRIT

VISIBLE (Material)

INVISIBLE (Immaterial)

Bones
Muscles
Flesh
Organs

Spirit
Soul
Thoughts
Emotions

WHAT IS MATTER?
How many atoms are in
here?

ATOM

atoms

Population of US

WHAT IS MATTER?
Atoms are kind of like magnets.
We are made of countless tiny
magnets.
We are limited because of atoms.

IS A SPIRIT MADE UP OF ATOMS?

No, a spirit is not material.
Our thoughts, emotions, etc. are not
made up of atoms.
What is greaterthe spirit or the
body? Why?

WHAT IS GREATERBODY OR SPIRIT?

The more perfect anything is in the
rank of creatures, the more spiritual it
is, as gold is the more pure and perfect
that has least mixture of other metals.
Stephen Charnock

WHY DID GOD GIVE US BODIES?

Bodies are very limiting. Why did He
create something so imperfect?
To make us remember that we are His
creation and are inferior to Him.

DOES GOD HAVE A BODY?

Yes? Exodus 7:5; Numbers 6:24; Ps.
33:6; Ps. 35:15; Ps. 89:10; Ps. 57:1.
Also, Gen. 32:30; Deut. 34:10.
No? 1 Tim. 1:17; 1 Tim. 6:16; John
1:18; Deut. 4:15.

DOES GOD HAVE A BODY?

No, He does not have a body. He is a
spiritual being.
Why then do we find descriptions of
Him as if He has a body?

God, desiring to make himself known to

man, whom he created for his glory, humbles,
as it were, his own nature to such
representations as may suit and assist the
capacity of the creature; since by the
condition of our nature nothing erects a
notion of itself in our understanding, but as it
is conducted in by our sense.
Stephen Charnock

DOES GOD HAVE A BODY?

If He had a body, He would not be
unlimited and infinite.
He could not create the universe.

SHOULD WE THINK OF HIM AS HAVING A

BODY?
Is. 40:18
It damages the reverence of God in the
minds of men, and by degrees may lower
mens view of God, and make them
believe he is like they are; and that not
being free from the figure, he is not also
free from the imperfections of the bodies.

ANTHROPOMORPHISM
1. God appears to us or manifests
Himself to us in human form or even
attributes to Himself human
characteristics.
2. We cannot ascend to where God is,
but He can descend to where we are.
Christian Apologetics & Research Ministry

ALL-PRESENT

WHERE IS GOD?
Is He in heaven?
Is He only in heaven?
Is He on earth?
Is He on Pluto?
Is He in hell?

WHERE IS GOD?
In heaven
Matt. 6:9
Matt. 23:9
Ps. 115:3

He is not only in heaven

2 Chronicles 2:6

DEISM
God created the world and left it to
itself.
He was never involved in human
history.
What parts of the Bible must we
reject if we accept Deism?

WHERE IS GOD?
In heaven
He is not only in heaven
He is on earth
Jeremiah 23:24
Deuteronomy 4:39

WHERE IS GOD?
In heaven
He is not only in heaven
He is on earth
What about hell?

Revelation 14:10
Hell is not Satans palace, it is his prison.

WHAT IS ALL-PRESENCE?
We cannot fully understand God by
what He is, but by what He is not.
Spiritual He is not material.
All-present He is not restricted from
any place.

The largest heavens are no limit to

him. He has an essence beyond the
limits of the world, and cannot be held
and contained in the vastness of the
heavens.
[Stephen Charnock]

He fills the depths of hell, the

extension of the earth, and the heights
of the heavens.
[Stephen Charnock]

Whoever heard of a sunbeam stained

by shining upon a swamp, any more
than sweetened by breaking into a
perfumed room? Though the light shines
upon pure and impure things, yet it
mixes not itself with either of them; so
though God be present with devils and
wicked men, yet without any mixture.
[Stephen Charnock]

WHAT ABOUT?
Isaiah 55:6
John 14:23
He is everywhere with His presence,
but in certain places with His grace
and favor.

He is equally present with the

condemned and the blessed, as he is an
infinite Being, but not in regard of his
goodness and grace.
[Stephen Charnock]

He is in all creatures as their

preserver: in the condemned, as their
terror; in his people, as their protector.
He fills hell with his severity, heaven
with his glory, his people with his
grace.
[Stephen Charnock]

HOW CAN GOD BE EVERYWHERE?

Because He is spiritual.
He is not limited by matter.

IF HE IS EVERYWHERE WHY CANT WE SEE

HIM?
He is spiritual.
Our senses can only see that which is
made out of matter.
1 Tim. 1:17To the King of the ages,
immortal, invisible, the only God, be
honor and glory forever and ever.

Nothing is more present than God, yet

nothing more hid; he is light, and yet
obscurity; his perfections are visible, yet
unsearchable; we know there is an infinite
God, but it surpasses the compass of our
minds.
[Stephen Charnock]

IMPORTANCE OF HIS ALL-PRESENCE

Preservation
Acts 17:28
Hebrews 1:3
Colossians 1:17

If things live, they are in God, who gives

them life. If things live, God is in them, and
gives them life; if things move, God is in
them, and gives them motion; if things have
any being, God is in them, and gives them
being; if God withdraws himself; they
presently lose their being.
[Stephen Charnock]

IMPORTANCE OF HIS ALL-PRESENCE

He is king everywhere
Isaiah 66:1
As his eternity makes him King always, so
his all-presence makes him King
everywhere.
[Stephen Charnock]

ALL-KNOWING

PSALM 147:5
Great is our Lord, and
abundant in power; his
understanding is infinite.

God being not a body, does not see one

thing with eyes, and another things with
mind, as we do; but being a spirit, he sees
and knows only with mind.
[Stephen Charnock]

WHAT MAKES GOD ALL-KNOWING?

Is it because He
knows everything in
the universe?

WHAT MAKES GOD ALL-KNOWING?

No; the universe does not have infinite
things that can be known.
What does God know then that makes
His knowledge infinite?
He knows Himself (1 Cor. 2:10-11).
He is infinite.

WHAT THINGS DOES HE KNOW?

Numbers the hairs of our head (Lk. 12:7).
I know all the birds of the hills (Ps.
50:11).
Numbers the clouds (Job 38:37).
Numbers all the stars (Ps. 147:4).

WHAT THINGS DOES HE KNOW?

Does know He the past, present, and
future?

I am God, and there is none like me,

declaring the end from the beginning
and from ancient times things not yet
done.
[Is. 46:9-10; also Acts 15:18]

KNOWS ALL TIME

Did He know all who would exist?
Yes; Jer. 1:5.

Did He know all that would happen in

the history of the human race?
What about WWII? Genocides?

KNOWS ALL TIME

Did He know that Lucifer was going to
betray Him?
Did He know that Adam was going to
sin?
Yes, He knows all things.

OPEN THEISM
God does not know the future, He only
predicts it.
What would result if this were the
case?
Prophecies may not be fulfilled.
God can change.

WHAT THINGS DOES HE KNOW?

God knows all the thoughts and
deeds of every person.
Job 31:4
Heb. 4:13
Ps. 7:9

He remembers all things (Rev. 20:12).

How much better would it be for

desperate sinners to have their crimes
known to all the angels in heaven, and men
upon earth, and devils in hell, than that
they should be known to their Sovereign,
whose laws they have violated, and to
their Judge, whose righteousness obliges
him to revenge the injury!
[Stephen Charnock]

All things are before God at once; our

sins are before him, as if committed this
moment, though committed long ago.
