Dear Reader,
English is an important language that one considers to learn in different parts of their life,
due to variety of things. Many people think that learning language is something that is not
necessary because, they have been not required to know the necessity of the language. I also, like
many others thought so, till I came to the United States for visiting my uncle, two years ago. It
was seen that there were many things that were extremely new to me. From everything being
displayed in English language and looking at my father talk fluently to everyone, I felt ashamed
of myself not being able to communicate in the language. On seeing that I thought that even I
needed some sort of improvement because coming to the United States for my education is
something that is extremely impossible to survive without language. The class English113A gave
me an opportunity for improving my writing skills and have made me better writer and look
forward to learn about new subjects to write in English113B.
After coming to the United States for my higher education, I improved drastically. On
using higher vocabulary and the fluency to talk in English made me feel extremely proud. One
thing that I thought that I would never be able to improve was actually the writing part. But after
taking English 113A, I improved a lot. I always thought that being a writer means a person who
was born and brought up in this country. It was a thing that most of the students think about due

to less usage of English language in the home country that one belonged to. It is a thing that
anyone would be afraid of irrespective of where they belong to.
The main fear that I always had was that I would not be able to write in English because
we had to write a lot. But on talking to the professor and taking his guidance made my job
extremely easy. My first essay was My First Road Trip, it was an essay that had a lot of
grammar mistakes, One of my favorite jokes were how the Arab spend money on weddings and
how Americans spend on weddings (Alsanei, My First Road Trip). This shows my grammar
was not that up to the mark. The way I thought about an incident was very different and I needed
to re-read the essays over and over again so I can know that the grammar was going wrong. This
improved my usage of words and to describe things like I was that thing. It helped me improve
the narrative skills as well.
Another essay was an extremely interesting one, it was about the usage of IPads for
elementary school, I titled my essay as Generation of IPads this was later corrected by the
professor to come up with a better title. I always had an issue in writing the thesis, Especially
when the students are get to use of technology since a very young age (Alsanei, Generation of
IPads, Good or Bad?). This was my thesis statement and I corrected it. It helped me become a
better writer having a good thesis statement as it contributes the major part in writing an essay. If
a reader reads the thesis statement that would explain the whole point of essay and can contribute
a lot to organizing the ideas.
Another essay was about Gender Inequality. It was about, ads as it allowed me to know
the importance of language and the constant words by the professor telling that I was on the right
path encouraged me a lot. The advertisements point out towards the nature of the inequality
preferences that society encourages although many people think that men and women are equal

in todays world, the advertisements point out that the differences still exist(Alsanei, Gender
Inequality). This being my thesis helped me to construct the essay by connecting the important
parts and coming to a conclusion before a counter argument. This essay was a really interesting
one as I could actually relate a lot to the things that we see and hear. It was something that I
focused on writing and helped me get the ideas sorted out. The outline was an important thing
that the professor had told us, because of this I was able to cover all the points that I had in my
mind. It helped building confidence in me. The MLA format, was something that was new to
me, but with the guidance of the professor I learnt it. The citation is really important as told by
Professor Jackie as it would help in knowing the facts that are stated by people and do not really
go in waste. I really feel from inside that I have developed as a writer and not only a good reader
and listener but I can also write in a confident way.
I really have progressed as a writer. The help of the professor Jackie helped me to do this
as the prompts that are given for all the progression are very clear and do not have much of a
problem. When comparing to the other friends of mine, they always have problems with
understanding the prompts. It is a common thing that the professors give out hard essays and
things like that but the least that they could do is give out clear prompts that would help the
students understand and relate it to themselves and not get afraid of writing the essay with
specific prompts.
Now, I feel really happy and confident about writing. I would read different magazines as
a part of my pass time and would also show my friends back at home texting in English rather
than Arabic. This would help me become an example for my friends and relatives back at home
and would allow my friends to see that what person I have become. It also helped in them

knowing that I have developed as a writer and it is not that hard. It is just to stay focused and rely
on ones own hardwork.
