NONRIGIDPARTS.FREESTATECONDITION
Unless otherwisespecified, all dimensioningand tolerancingappliesin a free state
conditionwith no reslraint. Some pails, such as sheet meta-l,t'hinmetal,plasticsand
rubber are nonrigid.in nature. lt may be necessaryto specifydesign requirementson
the part in a naturalor free state as well as in a rebtrainedconditio-n.tne restraintor
force on the nonrigidparts is usuallyappliedin such a manner to resembleor
approximatethe functionalor mating requirements.
A note or specificationon the drawing should explainhow the part is restrainedand
the force requiredto facilitatethe restraint. A sample note can be found on the
drawingbelow.
lf any.of the part specificationsare to be verifiedin a free state, the designermay
specifythis requirementwith the words FREE STATE or the free state slmOot. ine
free state symbolis a F in a circle. The free state symbol means that dimensions
and tolerancesthat have the free state symbolappliedare checkedin the free state
and not in the restrainedcondition.
The free statesymbolis appliedby placingit nextto or associatingit with the required
dimensionsand lolerances.lf it is appliedin a featurecontrolframe.it always follows
the featuretoleranceand any modifiers.

FLATNESSVERIFICATION
There are many ways to check a flatnessspecification. Some are betterthan others. Each
method willgive a ditferentanswer. This is called methodsdivergence. As with
verificationsfor any geometrictolerance, the method or procedureused for verifcationwill
depend on many factors. How many parls are there to check? ls this the 1st part
producedor the 100CIh? ls the tolerancewell within the processcapability? Are statistical
processcontrolsbeing done? How tight is the tolerance? What kind of equipmentis
available? ls it an in-processcheck or a final check? How big is the budget?

Allof these factorsand many more will have an effect on how the part is verified. The
proceduresfor verificationshouldbe recorded in a dimensionalmeasurementplan and
coordinatedwith anyonewho is involvedwith the part.

The measurementtechniquesand proceduresshown below are for illustrationand

backgroundinformation. These proceduresare intendedto assistthe reader in
understandingthe concepts. In additionto the methodsshownbelow,a coordinate
measuringmachine(CMM)can also be used.

COMPOSITEPOSITIONTOLERANCING
Compositepositiontolerancingcdn be appliedwith two datumfealuresin the lowersegment.
In the examplebelow, the uppersegmentlocatesand orientsthe pattemof holesto the

THIS ON THE ORAIYING

APPLICANON
Compositepositionaltolerancingwith 2 datums in the lower
segment can be used where the locationof the holes are
importantlo each other, but the relationof the holes, relative
to the datums, are not as important. The group of holes,
however, may shift back and forth and up and down but
may not rotale relativeto the DRF as much as specifiedin
the upper segment. This might be an applicationwhere a NAME PIJTE
name plate attaches with the holes. The location of the
