EDUC 5324: INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY INTO EDUCATION
Name:_Kubra Unlu_____________Date:11/1/2015_________________
Topic Selected:
What does the research say about advantages and disadvantages of distance education?

1. LITERATURE REVIEW:
What does the literature/research say about this issue/topic? By using NAU
Library or Online Search engines, conduct a literature review.

You need to include 5 different sources (book, journal article, web article
etc.) in your review. Try to use current sources as much as possible.

You need to summarize and synthesize your sources by discussing a

common theme or issue.

You don't need to critique your sources

You don't need to evaluate your sources (if the sources are trustworthy,
weather the author has a bias or not)

You need to provide background information such as history and

definitions

Brief Literature Review:

There are crucial advantages of distance education. For example, significant
savings were made by educational institutions in terms of human and other
resources utilization, and thereby have increased their profits. (RADOVIMARKOVI, M.,2010) Students perform better in on-line than traditional
environment. (CNETNews.com Staff 1997). Educators can participate to
online course by using the Internet or other technologies rather than travel to
a specific site (Russell, M., Kleiman, G., Carey, R., & Douglas, J. 2009)
Distance education offers many students to be in a single physical space
rather than give seats for them. According to Matthews, benefits of distance
education are: increased access to higher education flexible scheduling of
personal time, convenient location, individualized attention by the instructor,

less travel, and increased time to think about, and respond to (via e-mail or
discussion boards), questions posed by the instructor. ( Matthews, D. 1999) A
disadvantage of the virtual education is that there is no opportunity to
observe students body language during the class whether they understand
the topic or not. (Kilpin, C. 2002)
2. REFLECTION:

What is your personal opinion on this issue? Do you agree with the
research? If you agree or disagree, please explain why?
Provide examples/experiences regarding this issue from school
perspective or If you are not working in a school, from your profession. Be
specific with your examples. You can mention software/hardware names,
specific methods that you plan to use, etc.
How would you implement this research in your career? (At least 1
paragraph)

Reflection:
According to my research, virtual educations benefits are more than its
disadvantages. However, that might be one of the disadvantages of distance
learning is that it might lack of peer -teacher-learning. In the traditional
classrooms, students can need different or more explanation. Unfortunately
teachers cannot reach everyone because of the class size. If that is the case
that teachers ask students to work in pairs which can help students who learn
from each other. On the other hand, I believe that online education offers less
interaction with instructors that is not a trigger effect for students to study.
So, students have to be enough mature and self-motivated in order to be
successful.
These studies triggered me to realize that a virtual education is definitely a
benefit in addition to the regular campus site education; of course there are
other details that one needs to consider before enrolling to a virtual
education. Additionally, students and instructors do not need to travel so this
educational opportunity provides less expenses.
