CASE STUDY #10

An 11-year boy instituted the following ceremonial before going to bed. He did not sleep until he
has told his mother every last minute detail of the events that occurred that day; there must be
no scraps of paper or other rubbish on the carpet of the bedroom; the bed must be pushed right
to the wall; three chairs must stand by it and the pillows must lie in a particular way. In order to
get to sleep he must first kick out a certain number of time with both legs and then lie on his
side.

Driving back from a concert, Gerri fell asleep at the wheel and crashed her Jaguar convertible.
Her best friend perished in the crash. Ever since, although doctors can find nothing physically
wrong, Gerri has been paralyzed in the arm with which she was steering.

Diagnosis and Explanation
OCD: obsessive compulsive disorder can cause someone to feel the need to check things
repeatedly or perform a certain ritual repeatedly. these obsessions often get in the way of
everyday life
this boy has ocd because he has to have everything a certain way and he has to do a certain
ritual each night in order to get to sleep.

Behavioral Therapies
Behavioral therapy is used to replace bad habits with good ones to treat ocd they would
discuss coping mechanisms, try to slowly get him to learn new behaviors and stop doing his
nightly routine, and use positive reinforcement.

Cognitive Therapies
cognitive therapy is based on how our thoughts affect our emotions, behaviors, and physical
reactions. to treat OCD they would use exposure and response prevention (ERP) where they

expose the person to the things that cause them anxiety and help them to not react in an
unhealthy way, they also help the person to slowly stop doing routines.

Group Therapies
Group therapy is usually paired with one of the other types of therapies to best help the patient,
to treat OCD they would have the patient meet in a group of people who have similar problems
and try to help each other.

Biological Treatments
biological treatments uses medications to try to help the patient's immune system fight their
disorder, a lot of medications originally designed to treat depression have helped people with
OCD.

conversion disorder: starts as an emotional crisis and turns into a physical problem, even
though theyre not actually injured.
gerri has conversion disorder because she had an emotional crisis (her car crash) and it
resulted in her arm being paralyzed even though there is nothing physically wrong with her.

they would talk about coping mechanisms, go through physical therapy, and talk about the
accident to try to find the root of the problem

engage patients in avoided activities, use problem-solving, and relaxation training.

Group therapy is usually paired with one of the other types of therapies to best help the patient,
to treat conversion disorder they would have the patient meet in a group of people with similar
experiences and talk about what caused their disorder and how they have learned to cope with
it.

Biological Treatments
symptoms of PTSD can be treated with medications such as antidepressants and mood
stabilizers.

PTSD: post traumatic stress disorder can happen after someone experiences a stressful event
that put them in physical danger and causes them to feel afraid even though they are no longer
in danger, certain things can trigger flashbacks to the stressful event.
samantha has post traumatic stress disorder because she went through a stressful event that
put her life in danger, and now even though she is no longer in danger she suffers from
flashbacks and nightmares.

about the cause, try to relive the thing that is causing the PTSD, and try to find ways to cope
with it.

reactions. it helps you by giving you a new way to handle distressing thoughts and to
understand the problem better.

Group Therapies

Group therapy is usually paired with one of the other types of therapies to best help the patient,
to treat PTSD they would have the patient meet in a group of people with similar problems in the
group they would talk about what caused their PTSD and what things help them to cope with it.

Biological Treatments
Transcranial magnetic stimulation excites the brain by using weak electrical currents that are
said to alter the brains biochemistry.
