What is Technical Communication?
Assignment 1

Part I
1. The first definition of technical communication says that it is the generic term for all
written and oral communication done on the job whether in business, industry, or other
professions. It is particularly identified with documents in technology, science, and
The second definition of technical communication says that it is essentially a problemsolving process that involves the following elements at one or more stages of process: a
technical subject matter that is peculiar to or characteristic of a particular art, trade,
technology, or profession. It includes a recognition and accurate definition of the
communication problem involved.
2. The first video, Introduction to Technical Writing, defines the concept as a method of
communication which deals with subjects in engineering, business, trade, government,
technology and science. It is also a form of non-fiction and expository writing which is
written for and addressed to specific entities or individuals to attain desired objectives.
This form of written communication involves special knowledge and requires the ability
to write accurately, clearly, concisely, objectively and the absence of any attempt to
arouse emotion. It says that the purpose of technical writing is to give information, to
analyze and interpret events and their implications, and to persuade and influence
decisions. It also states its functions as follows: to serve as basis for mngt decision, to
furnish needed information, to give instructions, to explain techniques, to report
achievements, to analyze problem areas, to determine design and system requirements, to
serve as basis for public relation, to provide report to stockholders of companies, to
develop a product, to provide service, to record business proposals and to procure
business through proposals.
The second video gives a shorter but concise description of technical communication. It
uses a metaphor for the audience to understand better the concept: it is the math of
English. It says that a technical communicators job is to keep the language simple and
understand the audience. It states that it isnt just about forming clear sentences, its about
editing, writing grants, designing documents, creating presentations, writing proposals,
etc. Technical communication is any type of communication that relates information and
focuses on the audiences needs. When technical communicators create content, they
focus on getting that information to the users in the best possible format. Technical
communicators are great at audience analysis. They use their knowledge to create content
that innovates the user. This is why not just anybody can do what a technical
communicator does. Even a great writer may not communicate the information clearly.

Technical communication is a different kind of writing. Technical communicators are the

audiences advocate. They make sure that the content meets the audiences needs. This
why they have value in industry. This is the way the second video presents the concept of
technical communication and the people who employ it.

Some things that are mentioned in the definition presented in the second video and not in

Some elements that all the definitions have in common are that they need to be presented

information to the audience.

Part II
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word technical as follows: of or relating to a
particular subject and/or of or relating to a practical subject organized on scientific principles. It
also describes the words communication and writing as follows, respectively: the act or process
of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express
your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else and the way that you use written words to
express your ideas or opinions.
Technical communication refers to the way people express themselves when they need to
communicate specific information about a particular subject. It is a type of communication in
which the employment of poetic, inspirational and sentimental writing style is not used. On the
other hand, structural, mechanical, classic and accurate words are used to emphasize and
communicate to a particular section in society. Its purpose is to convey a message of analysis,
comprehension and interpretation. It is a simple way of communicating complex concepts.
Some of the examples of technical communication that we see in our daily lives are
presented in a YouTube Video published by Curmudgeon Cranckely. These are the following:
advertisements, information about medical supplies, instructions manual, ingredients and
directions on medications, recipes that use words and pictures to make it easier and possible,
textbooks, etc. Cranckely says that if its technical and communication, it is technical
communication. She also mentions that increasingly technical communication resides in the
machinery we use. For example, machines talk to us or show us pictures to communicate a
specific message and puzzle pieces are an example of how complex conveying information can
Technical Writing is a form of technical communication. Technical writing is the process
in which communicators convey their message. Writing is the method they choose to express
their knowledge. They can do it through different media: books, brochures, boxes, Internet, mail,
email, letters, advertisements, and an innumerous amount of other ways. They employ their
communication, technical, writing and grammar skills to make the audience analyze, interpret,
comprehend and understand the portrayed information. Not anyone can technical write correctly.
Technical communicators need to understand the audiences needs and desires. He uses these
necessities in his favor to hit just right in the spot of what people were asking for.
Technical communication and technical writing are extremely important processes in
todays society. As an audience, they help us improve our knowledge and accomplish different
type of goals: for example, from baking a cake to building a skyscraper. We can also be technical
communicators in the job we choose to perform. This is why we need to understand and
comprehend what it takes to effectively communicate each and every single word we think and
say. The importance of effectively communication is the key to success in our lives and to
improve our society not only in the medical, engineering and business worlds, but also in our
relationship with people we see every day.
