The general things that we hope to accomplish at Students Against Child Abuse (SACA) non-profit are to spread awareness about child abuse throughout the University of Utahs student body. Overall we hope that this will help lead to the end of child abuse in Utah. We are a new organization with need of many resources; our mission is to get students involved to help spread awareness of child abuse prevention across the world. There is no way a small organization like ours would be able to end child abuse without the help of others. Preventing child abuse is a very important cause. The only way to end child abuse is to spread awareness. II. Detailed Description of Existing Issue and why it merits your project. Child abuse is a very serious problem in todays society. There are four different types of child abuse. The four types are: Mental, physical, emotional, and neglect. There are a reported three million child abuse incidents a year in the United States. These are only the reported cases, imagine how many un reported cases there are. We can assume that most cases of child abuse go unreported. Children can either be too young to report the incident or in some cases too scared to come forward. Some of the types of child abuse can be impossible to see. Physical abuse is any non-accidental harming of someone under the age of 18.Physical is the most prevalent type of child abuse and it is the easiest to tell if a child has been physically abused. Physical abuse can be very dangerous to the child and in some cases life threatening. Emotional abuse is much harder to identify than Physical abuse. Emotional abuse is any intentional damage to a childs emotional development of self-worth. Neglect is the failure to give a child the basic necessities. Sexual abuse is any sexual action done for the sexual gratification of the adult. Child abuse is a very serious epidemic in the world. Child abuse can have long lasting effects that can have serious implications on society. Children who are abused are much more likely to become violent members of society. Not only does child abuse affect the children that are abused but if has a toll on society as well. III.
Detailed Description of Project
Our organization, Students Against Child Abuse (SACA) will raise
money and awareness for child abuse. Any money that we raise as an organization will be donated to Child Abuse Utah. Who are in direct partnership with the national organization Child Abuse America. As a small new organization we will not be able to use the money as effectively as Child Abuse America.
The way that SACA as an organization will raise money is through
a fundraising week that will take place in September. The SACA week will contain three main events on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The first event will be Thursday September 8th. The event will be called Trot for Tots. This will be an annual 5k race to raise money and awareness for our cause. In order to support this event there will be a $20 registration fee. This fee will include a t-shirt and a spot in the race. We encourage people to talk to friends and families to get them to donate as well. The next even will be Friday September 9th, this even will be a booth at the Union. These booths see many students a day and this way we will be able to reach a lot of the student body. Our booth will be there all day and its primary purpose is to educate the students about child abuse. We will hand out pamphlets, literature, and candy. We will have a game that our group created called corn hole trivia. Behind our booth we will have a pinwheel field as well as hand out blue ribbons so students can show their support for SACA. The final and most important day of our fundraising week will be Saturday, September 10th. This final event will be a Utah vs. BYU football game in which we will hopefully raise the most amount of money for our cause. We will partner with both the UTAH and BYU football programs to raise as much money as we can. We will get both the crimson club and cougar club to donate. Because our campaign is named SACA we will be using sacks in the game for donors to pledge money. Every time Utah gets a sack the University of Utah will donate a certain amount of money and every time BYU gets a sack the University will donate a certain amount of money. If there are no sacks in the game, whichever team raises more money will win the SACA trophy. We will pas out pinwheels to the student sections of the teams and have a moment of silence for the victims of child abuse at some point during the game. There are four people directly involved with SACA so far. These people are Dalton, Sarah, Ashleigh, and myself. We are always looking for more volunteers and contributors in hopes that we will grow into a stable organization. Everyone who works on the campaign will be volunteering, this is not a full time job for us. We estimate that our costs will be around $1000 for the entire SACA week. This includes materials, transportation, booths, games, candy and time spent with the organization. We are certain that these costs would be easily covered by local business and charitable citizens. Transportation would not be a big issue because we all live near a trax station and can easily access the University of Utah. Our project is easily accomplishable and we have very high hopes for the fundraising week. IV. Risk Analysis
An obvious setback that could happen during SACA week is that
there could be no sacks during the football game. If this happens to be the case then whichever team donates more money during the game would win the SACA trophy. Another obvious setback would be if no students were to get involved at our union booth. If this happened we would campaign in different ways by putting flyers up around the University to help spread awareness. If SACA does not succeed than we as a team have failed. The project is very important to us and can potentially help thousands of people. There will be no major consequences if our project fails, we would only be out time and a small amount of money. We are a connection to a much larger organization that has a much larger outreach, if we were to fail no one would be hurt. The only thing that can happen with SACA is positive. V. Benefit Analysis: If our project is as successful as we hope there are many positive things that can happen. The benefits are endless, many children would be helped and we would have done our job in helping spread awareness about child abuse prevention. The emotional benefits are immeasurable because there is no telling how many innocent children we have helped. Our goal is not a monetary goal, but rather a mental goal. If we can spread awareness we have done our job. Money is not going to fix this terrible epidemic. If SACA week is successful we would hope to start more chapters on different campuses. The outreach is endless and the potential benefit is immeasurable. The community is the one who benefits in this scenario. The volunteers get what they want and the world is a safer place because our organization was successful. VI. Conclusions Sadly child abuse is not going to be stopped in a day. The only thing that we can do as a successful organization is spread awareness so child abuse is limited around the world. Child abuse may never disappear but it definitely can be limited. We hope to start more chapters on different campuses around the nation and help stop child abuse once and for all. Remember, it should hurt to be a child. VII. References Child Abuse Statistics.
