2010 MERIT BADGE PROGRAM

Merit Badge Program
2010 Merit Badge Notes/Prerequisites This pamphlet has been created for Unit Leaders in preparation for their 2010 “Bartlett Experience”. When signing your boys up for their merit badges, please note any prerequisites. Work with your boy’s prior to camp to ensure completion of their badges at the end of camp. 2010 is a special year, and we’ve added many new and exciting programs to make your experience at Camp Bartlett a memorable year! Handicraft Area
• Art • Basketry - 2 projects needed. Buy projects at camp trading post (usually less than $10). • Indian Lore - Projects needed. Scout may buy projects at camp trading post (usually less than $10). • Leatherwork - Projects needed. Scout may buy projects at camp trading post (usually less than $10). • Pulp & Paper - Now offered at camp, in celebration of BSA Centennial, 2010! • Sculpting - Class fee (less than $5). Pay at camp trading post. • Wood Carving - Projects needed. Scout may buy projects at camp trading post (usually less than $10).

First Aid Area
• Emergency Preparedness - Requirement “9C”. Prepare a personal emergency service pack for a mobilization call. Prepare a family kit (suitcase or waterproof box) for use by your family in case an emergency evacuation is needed. Explain the needs and uses of the contents. • First Aid - Requirement “2D”. Prepare & bring a first aid kit to be used at the Scout’s home.

Scout Skills Area
• Fishing - Fishing pole required. Must catch 2 different kinds of fish. No fishing license needed (we have a private lake). • Fly Fishing - Fly rod required. Must catch 2 different kinds of fish. No fishing license needed (we have a private lake). • Orienteering • Path Finding - May only earn during BSA Centennial, 2010! • Pioneering • Signaling - May only earn during BSA Centennial, 2010! • Wilderness Survival - Requirement “5”. Put together a survival kit. Requirement “8”. Participate in Wilderness Survival overnighter at camp.

Aquatics
• Canoeing - Swim check is required to participate. • Lifesaving - Swim check is required to participate. • Rowing - Swim check is required to participate. • Sailing - Swim check is required to participate. • Swimming - Swim check is required to participate.

Ecology Conservation
• Archaeology • Astronomy - Requirement “5”. Find out when each of the five most visible planets that you identified in requirement 5a will be observable in the evening sky during the next 12 months, then compile this information in the form of a chart or table. Update your chart monthly to show whether each planet will be visible during the early morning or evening sky. Requirement “6”. At approximately weekly intervals, sketch the position of Venus, Mars, or Jupiter in relation to the stars. Do this for at least 4 weeks and at the same time of night. On your sketch, record the date and time next to the planet’s position. Use your sketch to explain how planets move. • Bird Study - Requirement “5”. Observe and be able to identify at least 20 species of wild birds. Prepare a field notebook, making separate entries for each species. • Energy - Now offered at camp, in celebration of BSA Centennial, 2010! Requirement “4”. Conduct an energy audit of your home. Keep a 14-day log that records what you and your family did to reduce energy use. • Environmental Science • Fish & Wildlife Management • Forestry • Geology • Insect Study - Requirement “7”. Raise an insect through complete metamorphosis from its larval stage to its adult stage (e.g., raise a butterfly or moth from a caterpillar). • Mammal Study • Nature • Oceanography • Reptile Study - “Requirement 8”. Maintain one or more reptiles or amphibians for at least a month. Record food accepted, eating mthods, changes in coloration, shedding of skins, and general habits; or keep the eggs of a reptile from the time of laying until hatching; or keep the eggs of an amphibian from the time of laying until their transformation into tadpoles (frogs) or larvae (salamanders).

Shooting Sports
• Archery - Requirement “2D”. Make an arrow. Kits available from camp trading post (less than $8). Shooting score required. • Rifle Shooting - Target fee. Purchase extra targets at camp trading post. Shooting score required. • Shotgun Shooting - Class fee $10. Purchase at camp trading post. • Hunter Education - New program for BSA Centennial, 2010! Participants must complete online class instruction & exams before coming to camp. Participants will then bring their completed exam to camp. The Scout will then be able to take part in the practical exercise portion of the course while at camp.
