1.0 INTRODUCTION
There are many misconceptions about chemicals usage by peoples up until today,
regardless their ages. Arens et al. (2006) saying that scientists are worried about the growing
disconnection between the lifestyle view of chemicals and the chemical realities of the world.
Anxiety about chemicals usage is something that can make students having less interest in
learning Chemistry subject and pursuing their studies in the Chemistry fields. This
misconception and anxiety must be eliminate especially among students as in the reality, the
good and bad of chemicals are depending on how peoples use them.
Colours of Chemistry is a programme organized by Chemistry Education and
Society (CEDS) club from Faculty of Education, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah
Alam. The overall aim of the programme is to introduce the real benefits of chemical in our
life and to expose students with the drawbacks of excessive chemical consumption via the
products that has been created by the mankind. This programme will focus more on building
awareness of chemistry and in the same time to change the misconceptions of chemicals
usage made by the students. It will be held for only one day which is from morning until
evening, together with professional facilitators. No fees are going to be charged on students
since all the budget come from sponsorship.
The target group for this programme is Form 4 students until Form 6 students from
Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seksyen 16, Shah Alam. This programme is targeting
Science Stream students specifically upper secondary school level that will be going to face
an important examination (SPM and STPM) and later on would be going to compete in
university life and next entering job industry. The total students involved altogether are 150
students. The selected venue for the program to be held is at the same school where the
participation of students come from, which is at SMK Seksyen 16 Shah Alam.
Through Colours of Chemistry programme, students will not only gain
knowledgeable and new inputs, but they can also enhanced their current basic knowledge
about Chemistry via what they had learnt during their teaching and learning session in the
classroom. This programme will emphasize on how to match their knowledge with the right
concept. As this programme successfully done later, the organizer team hope that students
would gained some valuable new knowledge about Chemistry and create positive thoughts
about chemicals usage in our life. Many benefits can be obtained by students who involved in
this programme.

2.0 RATIONALE
Upon designing this program, as the organizers, we aimed to help the students of
Form 4 until Form 6 from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seksyen 16 to enjoy Science,
specifically Chemistry and gain as much knowledge as they possibly get. Besides, we also
intended to help the students to have a broader idea on how Science can also carve a bright
future for them.
Later during this program, we will also conduct quizzes and Amazing Chemistry Race
to evaluate the students previous knowledge. Besides, we could obtain the evidence of their
level of understanding and therefore able to evaluate their learnings stage base on revised
taxonomy, via this method. The tasks and questions during the Race are mostly based on
the information we provide at the booths set up during the program.
As we look to another important matter, the budget and expenses, we would apply the
relevance amount and expected expenses from the Education Faculty of UiTM Shah Alam.
The total money that the program would need to apply from the Facultys Finance
Department is RM 3051.00. Other than that, by inviting the President of Institut Kimia
Malaysia or Malaysian Chemical Institute to deliver the talk upon subject of Advancement
and Development of Rubber, we have gained their agreement to sponsor 190 pieces of
goodies bags.
In addition, this program could also help the secondary schools students to socialize
with their colleagues in a healthy way because they could change ideas of learning and ways
to understand certain topics in Science (specifically Chemistry) in order to make learning fun.
Other than that, by participating this program, they are able to widen their networking by
knowing other people from other levels in their school.
Lastly, we chose students of Form 4 until Form 6 that are Science stream student
because we intended to help them to enjoy Science and change their way of looking Science
as a difficult subject instead of appreciating Science as part of their lives.

Master Plan of the program:

i.

In the schools hall (where Slot 1 and Slot 2 will be held)

ii.

In the schools field and surrounding schools blocks (where Slot 3: Explorace will be
held)

5.0 CONCLUSION
As a conclusion, we believe that this Colours of Chemistry programme will be
beneficial to be participated by the students especially for the Science Stream students of
Form 4 until Form 6 from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seksyen 16, Shah Alam. The
objectives of this programme would be achieved successfully with lots of useful inputs can be
gained by students. We are hoping that this program could inculcate students to use their
knowledges not only in school but also practically outside the school. Not just that, we really
hope that with the experience from this programme, the students will aware of their
responsibility to preserve the nature, to appreciate natural phenomenon, to keep the
environment clean and to love their body. Last but not least, we hope that this programme
will be one of the alternatives for the students to develop further love in Science and take
Science as a part of their lives.
