Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani girl and spokesperson for women’s right

to education.
She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 and she is the youngest person
ever to receive that Prize.
Malala was born on July 12th 1997 in Mingora, the Swat District of north
west Pakistan.
She was named Malala after a famous female poet and warrior from
Afghanistan.
Her father is a poet and a teacher and he had his own school.
When the Taliban took control of the area, they banned television and
music, and they limited women’s education. The Taliban didn’t want girls
to go to school .
There was a climate of fear but Malala was very brave and when she
was 11 she started writing a blog for the BBC, using a pen-name and
speaking about life under the Taliban. She went on going to school and
she fought for women’s rights.
In 2011, she received Pakistan’s first National Youth Peace Prize .
The Taliban decided that she had to die.
On 9th October, 2012, a masked gunman entered her school bus and
asked “Which one of you is Malala? Speak up, otherwise I will shoot at
you all.”
Malala was shot with a single bullet which went through her head, neck
and shoulder. Two other girls were also injured, even if not as badly as
Malala.
Malala didn’t die, but she was in a critical condition. The doctors decided
to move her to Birmingham in the United Kingdom , at a specialist
hospital .She came out of a coma and responded well to treatment.
She lives in England now with her family.
In her book “I am Malala” ( published in 2013 ) she writes: “It was a
miracle I was alive”
She also writes she is not angry and she has no desire for revenge.
On 12 July 2013, she spoke at the United Nations.
“I am not against anyone… I’m here to speak up for the right of
education for every child….
One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world.
Education is the only solution. Education first.”
