Much of the home remains true to its original occupant, newspaper owner Howard H. Fitzgerald. Though he originally owned the Flint Journal and later the Pontiac Press, Fitzgerald chose to .live in Grand Rapids and spent his summers in Macatawa Park.

Designed by two Detroit architects and built in 1927-28 by the local construction firm of Owen, Ames & Kimball, the house was' styled somewhat like an office building.

Fitzgerald, who died in the home shortly after entertaining friends on New Year's Day 1944, kept a second-floor office complete with ticker-tape machines 'and teletypes.

Peters bought the home in the early 19508 after J:1e- hit it big by developing a "no--nre'Ss way for homemakers to color their margarine. The . dairy lobby prevented cheaper margarine from being
