Methodology

Observation
Deriving understanding of an activity or group by watching it. In qualitative market
research practice, some 'pure' observation is carried out (for example, watching
shoppers in-store) but observation is often accompanied by a degree of interaction
between observer and observed. For example, researchers might go to a social
event with respondents, not only watching but also joining in the activity, while also
asking some questions and talking to participants about what is going on.
Survey
A method of sociological investigation that uses question based or statistical surveys
to collect information about how people think and act. For example, a possible
application of survey research to a business context might involve looking at how
effective mass media is in helping form and shift public opinion.
Interview
is a conversation between two or more people where questions are asked by the
interviewer to elicit facts or statements from the interviewee. Interviews are a
standard part of qualitative research. They are also used in journalism and media
reporting (see Interview (journalism)) and in various employment-related contexts.
The qualitative research interview seeks to describe and the meanings of central
themes in the life world of the subjects. The main task in interviewing is to
understand the meaning of what the interviewees say. Interviewing, when considered
as a method for conducting qualitative research, is a technique used to understand
the experiences of others.
