Michigan Curriculum Framework Content Standards and Benchmarks:
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.SRT.B.4
Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems include: a line parallel to one side of a
triangle divides the other two proportionally, and conversely; the Pythagorean
Theorem proved using triangle similarity.
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.SRT.B.5
Use congruence and similarity criteria for triangles to solve problems and to prove
relationships in geometric figures.
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG.CO.C.9
Prove theorems about lines and angles. Theorems include: vertical angles are
congruent; when a transversal crosses parallel lines, alternate interior angles are
congruent and corresponding angles are congruent; points on a perpendicular
bisector of a line segment are exactly those equidistant from the segment's
endpoints.
Unit Outcome:
Students will be able to reason and prove mathematical theorems given the
properties, postulates, definitions and theorems that they have already
experienced.
Lesson Outcomes:
TLW Be able to recognize and understand the concept of a theorem.
TLW Be able to recognize theorems 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, and 2.6 as well as Postulate 12
TLW Be able to use theorems, definitions, postulates, and properties learned in
order to put together proper two column proofs
Rationale/Purpose for Lesson:
The ability to write mathematical proofs correctly provides the student with the
opportunity to improve the way in which they support and prove their thoughts and
arguments. Understanding of theorems, definitions, postulates, and properties
gives the student a better understanding of what they are and are not allowed to do
mathematically as well as support for why they are taking the steps path they are
following in order to solve a problem
Assessment:
Students will be asked to help with proofs that are done on the board as a group.
There will be time given to the students as well to work in small groups at which
time the teacher will move from group to group to assess the learning that has
occurred by observing the work being done. At the end of class, homework will be
assigned and the students will have a greater chance to show their learning by
completing and correcting their homework the following day.

Resources/Materials Required:
-

White Board
Dry Erase Markers
Geometry Book
Notebook
Writing Utensil
Overhead Projector
Computer

Procedures:
-

When class begins, students will be asked to have their homework out in
order for it to be graded. The students will pass their homework to another
student for grading. The homework that is due today will be graded on a
complete or incomplete scale. The students will then be asked to present
their grades for the teacher to enter into the system.
The students will be given the chance to ask for questions from the
homework to be worked out by the teacher and fellow students.
After all homework has been graded, recorded and questions answered, the
previous days quiz will be returned and the answers will be gone over.
Students will have the chance to review their answers and ask any questions
that may have popped up from their quiz.
The teacher will present a question on the overhead using an online tool. The
students will be given a chance to work in small groups in order to provide an
answer to the proof.
To start the next sections material, the teacher will ask the students what a
theorem is from their homework the previous night. Students will be given a
chance to look through their notes and the book to come up with answer.
The teacher will then lead the students through a proof of Theorem 2.6 as
well as an explanation of Postulate 12, drawing on previous lessons.
Using the remaining time left in class, students will be given a chance to work
in groups again to start their homework starting with questions 28, 29, and
42.

Homework:
Homework has already been assigned and passed out at the beginning of the
trimester. Students will be reminded to look at their green sheets for the homework
that is due the next day.
Closure:
The students will be reminded that they will have a quiz the following day and that
they need to study the last two sections in order to do well. They will be given
another chance for question and answer at the beginning of the following days
lesson.
