history,asortofsoccerversionofIndependenceDay.Thatisthedatethat
theColombianandArgentiniannationalfootballteamsmetinBuenosAires
forthelastoftheirqualifyingmatchesforthe1994WorldCupintheUnited
States.WhicheverteamwonwouldgostraighttotheWorldCup.Theloser
wouldfaceAustraliainaplayoff.AtiewouldhavesufficedforColombia,but
insteaditwonthematch50.ItremainsthebiggestwininColombia'shistory.
Aplayerknownsimplyas"ElTino"scoredthesecondofColombia'sgoals
skilfullyevadingtwodefendersandthegoalkeeper,andthenscoringashe
felltothegroundandthefourth,acleverchip,beforeassistingteammate
Adolfo"ElTren"Valenciaforthefifth.ThedaycementedFaustinoAsprilla's
placeinColombianhistory.
Aspirllaandtherestofthatteamsentoursoccercrazycountryintoafrenzy,
intothecollectivedelusionthatwecouldwineverygame,thatwecouldwinit
all.Wewereunstoppable.IntheUnitedStates,though,theteamisprobably
betterrememberedintheUnitedStatesfordefenderAndrsEscobar,whose
lifestory,alongwiththatofdruglordPabloEscobar,wasthesubjectofthe
documentaryfilm"TheTwoEscobars."
AndrsscoredanowngoalwhileplayingagainsttheUnitedStatesandwas
murderedinMedelln,Colombia'ssecondlargestcity,afewweekslater.
Manypeoplethoughtthetwoeventswereconnected,butinrealityAndrs'
murderwasevenmoreabsurd:hebumpedintothewrongpeopleatthe
wrongtimeandabardisputeturnedintotragedy.Hisdeathwasasymbolof
thelawlessnessthatPabloEscobar'serahadbroughttothecityandmuchof
thecountry.
ButSouthAmericanfootballfansrememberthatColombianteamfromgames
liketheoneinBuenosAiresthatnightinSeptember.Nobodyhadever
beatenArgentinaatitshomegroundbefore.SodominantwasColombia's
performancethattheArgentinianfansattheRiverPlatestadium,including
DiegoMaradona,gotontheirfeetattheendofthegameandapplaudedthe
Colombianplayers.ForColombiansthatvictoryrepresentedthecountry's

hugepotentialoffthefieldaswellasonit.Andalthoughthewholeteam
wastalented,iftherewasonemanthatembodiedthehopeofacountrythat

FaustinoHernn"ElTino"AsprillaHinestrozalivedthedream.Hewas
nicknamed"Tino"notjustbecausethosewerethelastsyllablesinhisgiven
name,butbecausethatwordinSpanishmeans"aim"andhehada
wonderfullyaccurateshot.Hecouldscorefromanywhere.InBritishstadiums
there'sapopularchantforlethalstrikers:"Hescoreswhenhewants!He
scorewhenhewants!"
ThatwasTino:heseemedtobeabletoscorewheneverandfromwherever
onthefieldhewantedto.Asprillawasneveraplayerthatdictatedthepace
ofthegame.Heneverseemedtocaremuchaboutwhatexactlywhatwas
goingonofftheball.Hewasneveratactician.Buthewasalwaysthere,
playingthegamelikealittlekidamusinghimself,justwaitingfortheperfect
momenttoscore.
Tinowasathreatinpartbecausehedidn'tlooklikehecouldbeaserious
striker.Healwaysseemedtowearthewrongsizeofshirt(andshorts).And
sosometimesfullbacksdidn'tmarkhimbecausetheyforgothowhighhe
couldjump,andhowfasthecouldrun,andhoweasilyhecoulddancethe
ballaway.Hewasneverviolentinagame.Hedidn'tneedtobe.Footballfor
himwasnotabouthurtingyourrival,butaboutenjoyingthegame.Bothon
andoffofthepitchhewasplayful,hewasunpredictable.Butsincehewas
blackinacountrythatstillhasn'tcometotermswithitsblackpopulation,he
hadaroughtimewhiletryingtobehimself.Whenhebecameaninternational
superstar,healsobecamethemostbelovedblackpersoninColombia,and
themostcriticizedone.
Hispublicpersonatranscendedfootball.Notonlydidhescoregoals,he
datedsupermodelsdiscreetly(hehasneverbeenwillingtoconfesstheir
names,thoughmanyrumorshavearisen)andalsodatedfamoussingers,
lessdiscreetly(hisrelationshipwithLadyNoriegainthelate'90swasfoodfor
everygossipmagazine).Hegotpubliclydrunkintownfairsandcelebrations,
andsometimeswaslatetotrainingbecauseofhishangovers,whichwere
moreoftentheresultofhisaddictiontodancingsalsathantoalcohol.

AsprillawasalsooneofthefirstpubicfiguresinColombiatospeakagainst
racism."Somepeopledon'tlikemebecauseIamblack,"hetoldthepress.
Buthedidn'twanttobecomethespokesmanforthecountry'sracialissues.
Inaninterviewin2013,herecountedthathehadoftenbeeninsultedbyrival
fansbecauseofhisrace,butthathedidn'tcare,because"thosearethings
thathappeninthepitchandshouldstaythere."Hecomplainedthatother
playerscaretoomuchabouttheseinsultsandthatoneday"playerswillplay
witharecorderintheirshortssothecansuewhentheyareinsulted.But
whatcanyoudoifsomebodyisblackandsomebodyelseiswhiteandyet
anotherisyellow!"

Asprillawasbornin1969inTulu,asmalltownintheValledelCaucaregion
inthewesternpartofthecountry.Themostrecentnationalcensusfound28
percentoftheValledelCaucainhabitantsidentifythemselvesas"Afro
Colombian"(atthenationallevel,only10percentidentifyassuch).Butfor
thenationalmedia,centeredinthecapital,Bogot(where,accordingtothat
same2005census,only1.5percentofthepopulationidentifiesitselfas
"AfroColombian"),ablackpersonwasstillanodditywhenAsprillacameon
thescene.
Duringthecolonialperiod,largenumbersofblackslavesarrivedinColombia,
andbythe19thcenturyColombia'sblackpopulationwasscatteredaround
thePacificandtheAtlanticcoasts,inthewesternandnorthernpartofthe
country.Whenslaverywasabolishedin1851,manyfreedblackmen,instead
ofhavingtoworkfortheirformerownersformiserablewages,preferredto
taketheirfamiliesintounexploredterritoriestowardstheseareas,wherethey

couldmeetotherblackpeopleandcreatetheirowncommunitiesthere.Some
ofthemdecidedtocreatenewtowns,whileothersgravitatedtowards
"palenques",townsthatwerebuiltevenbeforeabolitionbyrunaways.Many
othersremainedinthecitiesofthenorththathadbeenslavetradingposts,
suchasCartagena,wheretheywouldbecastintoraciallysegregated
neighborhoods.
Thisdivisionmeantthatforacenturyandahalfanduntilthe1991
ConstitutiontheofficialstanceoftheColombiangovernmentwasbasically
toignoretheexistenceofthesepeople,sincetheyveryseldomhadanything
todowiththeaffairsofmaincitiesandtowns.Blackareasinthecountry
usuallylackedbasicinfrastructure,includingschools,whichmeantthatsocial
andevengeographicalmobilitywasalmostimpossible.Bogot,atopa
mountaininthemiddleofthecountry,didn'tseethearrivalofmanyblack
peoplebecausetherewasusuallynothingforthemtodothere,exceptfor
lowwaged,unskilledjobs,farawayfromtheirfamilies.
Becauseofallofthis,theexperienceofblackColombianshasn'tusually
enteredthenationalconsciousness,norbeenrepresentedbymainstream
media,exceptinareaswhichalreadyhadsomeblackpresence(like
Cartagena),orthathaveseensomeblackmigration(likeCali).Evenso,
therehavebeenblackplayersintheColombiannationalfootballteamalmost
sinceitsbeginnings,withRicardo"BollodeYuca"Granadosthefirstoneto
becalledupinthe1930's.AfewotherblackColombiansmanagedtothrive
inotherdisciplinesthroughoutthe20thCentury,suchasAntonio"Kid
Pambel"Cervantesinboxing,anddgarRenterainbaseball.
By1990,whenTinoarrivedinthespotlight,footballseemedtobetheplace
whereblackColombianscouldberecognizedasanintegralpartofthe
country.Fromanoutsideperspective,theredidn'tseemtobearacialbarrier
inthesport,aseveryteaminColombiafeaturedblackplayersandalotof
themwerethestars.Thenationalteamthatqualifiedforthe1990WorldCup
inItalywasnoexception,asitfeaturedplayersMiguel"Niche"Guerrero,
BernardoRedn,LuisCarlosPerea,ArnoldoIguarnandFreddyRincn,and
wascoachedbyFrancisco"Pacho"Maturana.Rincnbecameanationalhero
afterhescoredalastminute,gametyinggoalagainstGermanyinthegroup
stagethatsentColombiatotheroundof16.

blackColombiansexisted,butIjustneverencounteredtheminmydailylife.
TinoAsprillachangedthisformeandprobablyforagenerationofcity
dwellers.HemadeAfroColombiansconcreteinourheads.
Asprillamadehisprofessionaldebutin1989withCcutaDeportivoateam
notoriousforitslosingstreaksbuttransferrednextseasontoMedelln's
AtlticoNacional,whichbythenwasrumoredtobeownedbyPabloEscobar.
HearrivedtothefirstteamalittleafterNacionalhadwontheCopa
Libertadorestitle(thefirstColombianteamtodoso)thatyearandstayed
thereforthreeyears.Heplayedin78gamesforNacional,scored38goals
andwonaleaguetitle.Hisgoalsattheclubandinternationallevelmadehim
aprominenttargetforthemajorEuropeansidesandin1992,afterbeing
soughtbyJuventus,FiorentinaandBarcelona,hewastransferredtoItalian

TinoarrivedinItalywhenSerieAwasthewealthiestandmostglamorous

WhileinItaly,AsprillawasratedasoneofthetopfiveplayersinSerieA.His

Backhomehissuccesshadcaptivatedthecountry.Everyweekendthe
nationalbroadcastercarriedParma'smatches,andordinaryColombians

twoalsodidbattleinthe1994WorldCupintheUSA.
Asprillahadbeenraisedinpovertyalongsidesixsiblings,byhismom'scare
andhisdad'sincomeasaworkerinasugarcaneplantation.Nowhewasa
superstar.EverybodyinColombiaknewwhoTinowas,andhewasn'tshy
aboutmakinghispresenceknown.Backathome,heworefancydesigner
clotheswithloudcolors,andusuallywentaboutinexpensivecars.Hespoke
allthetimehealwayshadastorytotellandwasajournalist'sdream,
alwaysmakingstirringcontroversy.
OneofthefirstcontroversiesinTino'scareercameinAprilof1993,whenhe
wentbacktoTulutovisithissickmother.Ashewasdrivinghiscarinthe
street,abuscuthimoff.Hegotoutand,angryashewas,hekickedthebus,
injuringhimselfandmissingfourweeksofgames.Initially,Colombianmedia
reportedthatTinohadbeeninacaraccidentwhiledrivingdrunk.Manyop
edswerewrittenlambastingAsprilla's"dubiousmoralstance"and
proclaiminghis"fallfromgrace".
Eventuallyitwasproventhattherewasnoalcoholinvolved,andTinowent
backtoParma.Still,manyanalystsopinedthatTinowasnotreadytoface
thechallengesthatfamebroughtwithit,andthatafteradisappointing
performancewiththenationalteaminthe1992BarcelonaSummerOlympics,

ThosedoubtsturnedintomassiveexpectationsafterAsprilla'sastonishing
performanceinthe50victoryinBuenosAires.Colombiahadhumbledthe
WorldCupfinalistsandreigningCopaAmricachampion.Suddenly,
Colombiawaseverybody'stiptowintheWorldCupintheUnitedStates,
includingPel's.Hopeswereevenhigherwithagroupthatfeaturedaweak
hometeam,RomaniaandSwitzerland.Buttheoverconfidenceoftheteam,
coupledwiththepressureofthenationalmediaandstillobscurethreatsfrom
gamblingmobstersstartledtheteam.Colombialostitsfirsttwogamesofthe
tournamentandwaspromptlyeliminatedinthefirstround.Tinodidn'tscore

ThiswasaroundthetimeIstartedtogetreallyinterestedinfootball.Iwas
about6yearsold,andInoticedsomethingthenabouttheblackplayersinthe
team.Whenevertheymadeamistake,somepeoplewatchingthegame
wouldscream"Negrohijueputa!"("F***ingblack!")or"Negrotenaqueser!"
("Hehadtobeblack!").Iaskedmydadwhytheydidn'tscream"F***ing

ThishappenedparticularlytoTino,forwhomtherewerethehighesthopes,
andwhoseemedattimeslikeabrokenpromiseonthefield.
WheneverIdiscussedAsprillawithmyfriends,theyraisedtheprejudices.
Manysaidhecouldhavebeenthebestplayerintheworld,ifonlyhewereto
applyhimself.Theyreasonedthatthiswouldneverhappenbecausehis
suddenwealthasablackpersonhadmadehimundisciplined.Ofcourse,this
wasabsurd,butitwasandstillisamentalityingrainedinColombian
society.In2008,forexample,MarioFernandoPrado,acolumnistatthe
prestigiousnationalnewspaperElEspectador,wroteapieceinwhichhe
criticizedAsprillaafteroneofhisincidentsandcalledhim"negritosuperado"
("overachievinglittleblackman").
Tinoseemsnevertohavebeenriledbysuchattacks.Askedabouthiscritics,
heofferedastraightforwardaccount:"Well,forthemitisf***inghardwhen

greatestplayerintheworld,ifhejusthadsethimselftoachievethatgoal.
ButinarecentdocumentarymadebySealColombia,Asprillasaid:"Evenif
somepeoplebelievethatIdidn'ttakefulladvantageofmytalent,IthinkI
playedaswellasIcould.IplayedfootballaslongasmybodyheldupandI
amsatisfied."
Duringhisprofessionalcareer,Asprillarackedupanastonishinglylonglistof
anecdotes,especiallyduringhistimeinItaly.Bythenhispartieshadbecome
famousinParma.FormerItalycaptainFabioCannavaroandGianluigiBuffon
bothrememberthepartiesandtheirreputationacrosstheItalianleague,
becausetheywerefilledwithTino'smanysalsadancingfemalefriends.
Tinowasabachelor,andheroutinelyinvitedhisItalianfriendstogetaway
fromtheirgirlfriendsforawhileinhisthreefloorhousethatwasusuallyfilled
withbeautifulwomen.WhatearnedhimareputationinColombia,though,
wastheotherescapadesthathittheheadlines.Aftercomingbacktothe
countryaftertheWorldCup,onJuly7,Tino'sbodyguardstookthegunaway
fromasecurityguardinamallinCaliandshotafewroundsintheair,after
thesecurityguardshadinsultedtheplayer.InAugust,adoctorfromthe
ColombiannationalteamrevealedthatAsprillahadbeendrinkingheavily
duringhistimeintheUnitedStates.BytheendofDecemberhewasbackin
Calitocelebrate"LaFeria",amassiveyearlyevent,wherehegotarrestedfor
beingtoodrunkandfightingpeopleinpublic.

Asprillahimselfthinksthatmoneywaswhatgothimintosomanyscrapes.He
toldCromosmagazinein2013thatindisciplinestarts"whenyoustartgetting
money,becausethereisnoindisciplinewithoutmoney.WhenIdidn'thave
anythingtospend,Iwaswellbehaved,butthen,whenIgotsomethingto
spend,Ibecameundisciplined."
Ofcourse,healsosaidtoElPas(anewspaperfromCali),thatsameyear
thatmoneynevermadehim"dizzy.""Itneverchangedme,"heinsisted.And
inasensehewasright,evenwithhisnewcarsandclothes,hestillwasthe
samekidthatwantedtohavefun,itwasjustthathehadalotofmoneyathis
disposaltopursuethatenjoyment.
ByFebruary1996,ParmahadgrowntiredofTino'smisbehaviorandpoor
formandwaslookingtosignareplacementstriker.Asprillawassignedby
NewcastleUnitedhalfwaythroughtheseason,withtheMagpiesleadingthe
PremierLeaguebyninepointsoverManchesterUnited.Tinomadeanimpact
quickly,asherecordedhisfirstassistinhisfirstgameinEnglandandhopes
werehighintheNortheast.Fromthenandforthefollowingtwoyears,chants
of"Tino,Tino!"werecommoninSt.James'Park,whereheremainsacult
figure.
OnSeptember17,1997,NewcastlehosteditsfirsteverChampionsLeague
