Objective: To demonstrate the Law go Conservation of Momentum

Materials:

Background:
Momentum is a property of moving object, or to measure how hard of the object to
be stopped by using the formula p = mv. Conservation of momentum law explain that in
the momentum system will be constant when there is no external implies or force,
therefore; net momentum before and after are equal. There are two possible types of
collision, firstly, the elastic collision is a conservation of kinetic energy and the object she
will not changed. The second type is inelastic collision, some kinetic energy transform to
other form of energy and the object shape is changed.

Procedure:
1. Mark the number to Vernier carts
2. Measure the weight of 2 Vernier carts by using the mass scale.
3. Put 2 Vernier carts on the low friction Vernier track by setting them in 2 ways
- Experiment 1: Elastic collision > The velcro tape must be placed aways form
each carts.
- Experiment 2: Inelastic collision > The velcro tape must be placed to stick
together.
4. Set the Vernier cart number 1 at the position 100 cm, by the way the Vernier cart
number 2 must be at 120 cm (They must are away for 20 cm)
5. Insert force by pushing Vernier cart number 2 and record time before it collide with
Vernier cart number 1.
6. Recored time for a second time after they pass 80 cm point.
7. Record data into the paper
8. Use formula Velocity = distance / time to find the velocity of Vernier number 2 by
using distance 20 cm and time before collision.
9. Use formula Velocity = distance / time to find the final velocity by using distance 20
cm and time after the collision.

Elastic Collision

Solution:
momentum before collision
(M1U1) + (M2U2)
(632 x 0) + (644 x 31.7)

Percent different:
2(20414.8 - 20318.8)

= 20,414.8 gcm / s
momentum after collision
M1V1 + M2V2
(632 + 644) x (644 x 0)
= 20318.8 gcm / s

(20414.8 +20318.8)
= 0.47%

X 100

Inelastic collision

Solution:
momentum before collision
(M1U1) + (M2 x U2)
(632 x 0) + (644 x 43.5)
= 28,014 gcm / s
momentum after collision
(M1 + M2) xV
(632 + 644) x 20.4
= 26030.40 gcm / s

Percent different:
2(28014-26030)
X 100
(28014 +26030.4)
= 7.34 %

Useful formula for this experiment:

Analysis of the Result Conclusion:

The mass of two vernier carts are 632 grams (number1) and 644 grams (number2).
The first table depicts the data of elastic collision in the experiment, which momentum
before collision is 20414.8 gcm/s and the momentum after collision is 20318.8 gcm/s.
Using those two datas to calculate the percent different by using the formula above, only
0.47 % is percent different. The second table illustrates the data of inelastic collision, the
momentum before collision is 28,014 gcm/s and the momentum after collision is 26030
gcm/s. Therefore, the percent different of the two data is 7.34%. To recapitulate,
according to Law of conservation of momentum explains that momentum before and
after collision must be equal when there is no external impulse or force. In this
experiment there still has some external force such as the friction form the Vernier track
and carts and the air resistance in the room. As a result, in this experiment momentum
before and after in both elastic and inelastic collision are not equal. Nevertheless, the
percent different in elastic and inelastic collision must be less than 10 %, so the

momentums in the system are still conserved and followed the law of conservation of
momentum.
