Fuzzy modeling

4. Discussion
Population of stress and strain property in reservoir is actually an interpolation of these
properties. Till date any of the literature have not mentioned best interpolation method
for individual geomechanical property. If we look at the geostatistical workflow in below
figure we can see it include several steps.

The second stage of this workflow is

involves

building the geostatistical model. This process

several steps, depending on the objectives of the study. At this stage,

information collected during a

exploration of the dataset and prior knowledge of the

field determines how complex the model is and how good the interpolated values and
measures of uncertainty will be. When 1D Mechanical earth model built from Gamma
ray log it is possible to

Estimate rock properties including elastic properties such as

Youngs modulus (EM), strength properties mainly the uniaxial compressive strength
(UCS), and tensile strength and calibrate them using lab experimental data, mainly from
triaxial tests(S. Archer and V. Rasouli , 2014)
These are the datas, which used in in geostatic modeling. Once the model has been
completely defined, it can be used in conjunction with the dataset to generate interpolated
values for all unsampled locations within an area of interest.(Environmental Systems
Research Institute , 2015) Depending on the interpolation method, it can also measure
uncertainty for the interpolated values. Once interpolation done it checked for
reasonability and uncertainty so the validity is depend on data and calibration of
modeling.(Environmental Systems Research Institute , 2015)
Selection of an appropriate method for population of stress and strength property is
critical, but it is not an easy task. Because it depend on selection of correct spatial
interpolators.

When it come to selection of interpolator than it is depends on many

factors such as the variable under study, the spatial configuration of the data, and the
underlying assumptions of the spatial interpolation methods(Jin Li and Andrew D. Heap.
For this situation there is no simple answer regarding the choice of an appropriate spatial
interpolator, because a method is best only for specific situations (Isaaks and
Srivastava, 1989).
a number of factors need to be considered in selecting an appropriate method because
there is no one best spatial interpolation method.(Jin Li and Andrew D. Heap). The
choice of method is depend on the assumption and properties of each method as well as
nature and spatial structure of the data for the primary variable. Firstly it require to
evaluate data on based on that it is possible to choose suitable interpolation methods. In
this section we will discus several factors that affect the performance of the spatial
interpolation methods are discussed. Which

can be used prior to interpolation to

eliminate some inappropriate methods.

Fuzzy modeling

High density
When data density is high than result produced from all methods shows similarity
(Burrough and McDonnell, 1998). In Journal of Hydrology Dirks compared prediction
of krings methods with IDS and NN . He found krings method performed same as
determistic method.

So in case when high density data available than any of the

interpolation method can be choose.

Low density
Burrough and McDonnell suggested that When data are sparse than assumptions about
the variation among samples is greater so the choice of a spatial interpolation method
and parameters

become critical

but Hengel clamed in his A Practical Guide to

Geostatistical Mapping of Environmental Variables, that accuracy of modeling is not

depend on data density, rather than in depend on how well the sample have boon taken.
Because of two controversial result it is require further investigation for impact of low
density on interpolations accuracy.

Sample Spatial Distribution

Colin and Bolstad in Third International Conference on Integrating GIS and

Environmental Modeling presented that interpolation performed better for dense,
regularly-spaced data than irregular-spaced data.

Sample Size and variogram

Webster and Oliver suggested that sample size and sampling configuration or design
affect the reliability of the variogram. if the sample size is <50 than variograms derived
often erratic with little or no evident spatial structure . The larger the sample size from
which the variogram is computed, the more precisely is it estimated, although the
precision is unknown in most instances ( Webster and Oliver, 2001).

Fuzzy modeling

From above method it is possible to decide which method should be used for based on
data available but sometime from our method we have particular requirements as well as
certain technical limitation .so base on requirement here decision tree is developed with
help of Jin Li, Andrew D. Heaps literature

What type of information does require at the end ?

o One prediction per location

IDW & kriging
o Quintile value
Kriging
o Many prediction per location
Gaussian simulation
o Predicted value and error
Kriging
Different methods generate different types of output,

so base on which type of

information need to be generate prior to building the interpolation model.

Output type ?

o Prediction
IDW
o Prediction error
Kriging
o Probabilistic
kriging
o full distribution of possible value
simulation
Interpolation methods vary in their levels of complexity so based on required complexity
below decision algorithm can be used
