Searching for Margin

Finding the Wick After Burning the Candle at Both Ends
January Worship Series
January 10-31
In 1992, Dr. Richard Swenson wrote a book titled Margin: Restoring
Emotional, Physical, Financial, and Time Reserves to Overloaded
Lives in which he rightly diagnosed the dynamic in our society in
which we simply do not have any extra room (or margin, like on a
piece of paper) in the midst of our overbooked and overloaded lives.
It has been republished again and again, most likely because we still
havent figured out in twenty-plus years how to change. In fact, not only have we still not learned his lesson, but find
ourselves with even less margin than we once did. What does this marginless existence mean for our spiritual lives, our
schedules, our bodies, our money, or our relationships? Together, at the beginning of a new year, we will explore together what Scriptures teach us about margin, and about a healthy faith-response to our overcrowded culture.

FBC Book Club
Our February selection is All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. This book is
set in France during the Second World War. The meeting will be on Monday, February 8
at 7:00 pm at Lee and Carolyn Carlsonss home, 4705 Balmoral. Copies of the book are
available at Amazon, Lawrence Public Library, and Johnson County Library.
The First Baptist Book club reads a wide variety of works including fiction, non-fiction,
biographies, memoirs, and poetry. Members suggest the books to be read. If you love
books, please join us!
Wednesday Lunch and Evening Study
*Ash Wednesday services will be offered at noon and at 6:40 p.m. on
February 10.
*On Wednesdays throughout the remainder of Lent (February 17-March
23), there will be a Bring-Your-OwnLunch study/experience beginning at
11:30 a.m. (NOTE: this is a different
time than the Advent study), entitled Soul Tending. Our "underlying"
scripture will be Philippians 2:5-11.
The same activity will be our Lenten Wednesday night experience, as well.
Lent, traditionally, is a time of self-reflection and spiritual
growth. These experiences will provide time (margins!) in which
your relationship with God can grow.

Nominating Ministry Update

The Nominating Ministry continues to seek a Facilities

Ministry chairperson, vice-chair, and team members. If
you feel you could be of assistance in any of the following
roles, please contact Pastor Cheryl:
Job Descriptions:
Facilities Chair: Delegator. One who would contact people from a list to assist on a particular project. One who
would be the lead to contact plumber, electrician, repairman, etc. as needed. Plan and organize meeting times.
Facilities Sub-Chairs: A particular task would be assigned
to a small group or individual, with a Co-chair as facilitator if needed. Examples would be a group or individual
that only takes care of the lightbulbs; a group/individual
that only changes the HVAC filters; a group/individual that
only tends to outdoor yardwork/trash pick up. (A reminder that our custodian is a part-time position.) Etc.
Facilities Team members: A long list of names of those
who are able to assist in various ways around the building.
Most tasks would NOT be manually intensive. Some others would require ladder work. Some would require minor lifting. Some tasks would be once or twice per year;
some monthly; some seasonal. Etc. The list would have
your name and abilities.
Please consider how you could be of help so that just two
or three people arent tasked with the entire care & upkeep of the building.
Thank you!
Nominating Ministry members:

Jenny Purvis

Dear Loved Ones, Happy and Blessed 2016. We will never
thank you enough for what is going on the eye clinic.
God is using all of us to heal his people. In 2015, we
were able to consult 7100 patients and to perform 224
operations. This is the result of your prayers and our
prayers combined. We continue to experience difficulties in securing the medication for the operations. The
need for an eye doctor is still present, pressing and
acute. Thank you for supporting us and we continue to
trust that you will be with us in this New Year as we
struggle to be the witness of God's love to his people.

Wednesday Nights This Winter and Spring

During our Wednesday night after-meal gatherings this winter and
spring, we will be focusing on the theme, Tell Me a Story.
Except for Lent (February 10-March 23), we will be privileged to
hear stories from members and friends of Lawrence FBC. Some stories will emphasize a faith journey, some a personal one, and probably most will be a combination. Come hear about bike rides across
Kansas, trips to Israel, and other stories about living and growing in
God.
