Our Mission
Kitsilano Secondary School strives to provide learning experiences
that foster skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary to prepare
students to contribute to the well-being of our changing world.
Course Overview
Working from traditional broad based themes, this course emphasizes
introducing students to the basics of visual art and the art making process.
Students will also be introduced to the role art and imagery plays in our culture
and society. This course is designed to allow students to explore a range of
media, techniques and images in relation to contemporary and historical
contexts. Emphasis is placed on hands-on activities and projects in which
students are encouraged to work independently to develop their process.
The Following concepts and projects will be explore:
Introduction to visual art through elements and principles of design
The narrative in art
The human figure
Drawing what we see, not what we see in our heads
Tool exploration
Architecture
Emotion and message
2D to 3D imagery

Assessment and Evaluation
Grading for this unit will reflect the students ability to meet prescribed learning
outcomes in English Language Arts as set out in the BC Curriculum. Grades will
reflect a students attainment of skills (art processes, techniques, critical
thinking, and observation) as well as their demonstration of knowledge and
understanding of art in a variety of contexts. Each students learning will be
assessed and evaluated in relationship to their prior experience, skills and
knowledge and evidence of artistic growth throughout the year. Informal
evaluation will take place on an on-going basis (individual and class critiques,

Attendance
A note from home is required for any absence, including both illness and school
activities. The note must include the date and the reason for the absence.
Assignments
It is your responsibility to have assignments completed on time. If absent, find out
what the assignment was and hand it in the following class. Marks may be
deducted for late and/or incomplete work.
Punctuality
Students are expected to arrive on time.
Cheating and Plagiarism
Cheating is a serious offence and will result in a score of zero, notes to your
councilor and administrator and a call home. Refer to student agenda for further
details.
