ResidentialLeadershipCommunityPeerLeader

Inmyhall,IserveasaPeerLeaderfortheResidentialLeadershipCommunity.Around
thistimelastyear,IhadjustappliedtobecomeaPeerLeaderforthisupcomingyear.Iwantedto
beapeerleaderandIknewthatitwassomethingthatjustmatchedmesowell.I,admittedly,had
areallyawkwardfirstsemesterfreshmanyear.IhadnoideawhoIwantedtohangoutwithor
whattodoonweekends,Ididntreallyclickwithmysuitemates(whoallwerebestfriends),and
Ifeltshyforoneofthefirsttimesinmylifebecauseeveryoneinmydormwasjustsooutgoing.
IappliedtobeaPeerLeaderbecauseIwantedtogivemyresidentsabetterfreshmanyear
experience.Iwantedthemtohavesomeonetheycouldtalktoaboutanythingandhaveatleast
onefriendontheirhall.Iwantedtohelpbringpeopleoutoftheirshellstheyvemade.Iwanted
tohelpPeddrewYatesfeellikeahome.
Inregardstothisclass,thethreeskillsIwantedtodevelopwheregettingbetterat
planningandcommunicatinghallevents,findingawayformyhousetointeractandovercome
differences,andgettingtoknoweveryonereallywellinmyhall.MystrengthsareStrategic,
Communication,Input,Woo,andIndividualization.Iwouldsaythatbeingstrategicwasusedin
helpingtodevelopmyskillinorganizingeventsandtryingnewwaystogetpeopletocome.I
thinkallmyotherstrengthsrelatetowantingtoovercomingdifferencesandgettingtoknow
people.Toaccomplishmygoalincommunicatingevents,Itrieddifferentmethodsinfinding
whatworksthebest;Itriedemails,surveys,stickynotes,andwordofmouth.Theonesthat

seemedthemosteffectwerestickynotesandwordofmouth.Togettoknowpeoplewell,Itried
tohangoutwitheveryoneonmyhallatleastonceoneonone.Iwasabletogettoknowa
majorityofpeopleprettywell.Ithinkthatmostpeopleinmyhalllivetogetherwell,butIthink
thedifficultpartisgettingthepeoplewholiketogooutandpartyalottobeacceptedbythe
majorityofthestudentsonthehallwhodont.ThebestwayIcouldsomewhataccomplishthis
goalisbyexpressingtomyhallmateshowmuchIreallyliketheotherstudentsandthatthey
wouldgetalongifgiventhechance.
IliketobelievethatthepracticethatIdemonstratedthemostisEncouragingtheHeart.
ThestudentsinmyhallandinmyleadershipclassknowthatIamalwaysthereforthemandthat
iftheyneedhelpgettinginvolved,gettingtoknowpeople,orjustneedalisteningear,Iamhere
forthem.Ihadafewstudentsrevealthingstomethattheysaidtheyhadntrevealedabout
themselvestoanyoneelsehere.KnowingthatIamsomeonethatcanbeapositivelightto
someonemakesmefeelasthoughIamaccomplishingmyroleasapeerleader.Ithinkthatasa
whole,mypeersexhibitedinspireasharedvision.TheRLChasmademanychangesthisyear
andthepeerleadersweretheoneswhowerereallyenactingthemontothecommunity.An
exampleofthisisHousesandhousepoints.ThisisthefirsttimethattheRLChashadhouses
anditwasuptothepeerleaderstoputthisinapositivelightandestablishavisionforourhouse.
Wealsoareinspiringstudentstostayasecondyear,whichalsoissomethingnewtotheRLC
thisyear.Ithinkthatoverwhelmingly,thiswassomethingthatIclearlysawinmypeers.
Becauseofmyexperienceasapeerleader,Ihavelearnedalotaboutcommunity
buildingandservantleadership.IfIweretoreallybehonestaboutmypastviewonleadership,I
wouldsaythatIwasacitizenleaderandthatthoughIhavealwaysbeenpeoplefocused,Iused

tobemoregoaldriven.Ihavelearnedthroughbeingapeerleaderthatservingjustbecauseyou
wanttoreallymakeadifferenceisverydifferentfromjusttryingtoaccomplishgoals.Ithink
thatservingasapeerleaderistooabstracttoreallycomeupwithconcrete,measureablegoals.I
wouldcallmyselfaservantleadernowbecauseIdowhatIdonotforagoal,butbecauseIreally
lovemycommunity.Ihavealsolearnedhowtodevelopacommunityinmyhallandthe
importanceofindividualrelationships.Icantaketheseintomyfuturebybeingabletocontribute
tomyworkplacecommunitybybringingapositiveatmosphereandbygettingtoknowpeopleso
theytrustme.
IfeelthatIhavebeensuccessfulinmyroleasapeerleaderthusfar.Idontnecessarily
believethatmyskillsIwantedtodevelopatthebeginningofthiscoursearetheskillsIwantto
workonnow.IamnowataplacewhereIwanttoworkonmakingmystudentsexcitedabout
gettingtoknowpeopleonotherfloorsandgettingthemtobeexcitedtoengagewithothers.I
wanttopushthemtobeservantleadersaswellbycreatingahousephilanthropy.Isupposethat
becauseIfeelthisway,IcansaythatIhavegrownpastmyoriginalgoalsandthatIwas
successfulincompletingthem(forthemostpart).Ithinkthatmyvaluetothecommunityisone
ofmakingsureeveryonehasafriendtheycancometoandbeingasupportsystemformypeers.
Iliketoinstillconfidenceinothers&pointoutthepositivetraitstheyhaveandIthinkthatis
somethingthatpeopleIserveappreciateaboutme.Ithinkthatinthefuture(nextsemester)Iam
goingtofocusongettingtoknowthequieterpeopleinmyhall.ThereisonegirlwhoIam
finallygettingtoknowandIamhopingthatonceshefeelscomfortableinteractingwithpeople
onourhallwithoutme,Icanfocusonbuildingrelationshipswiththeotherquietergirlsinher
suitethatIhadntgottentoknowaswellyet.

ServingasapeerleadergavemesomuchinreturnthatIneverthoughtIdreceive.Ifeel
empoweredtodomoregoodasImovepastmytimeintheRLC.IknewIwasgoodwithpeople,
butIneverexpectedtolearnsomuchaboutthepeoplewhohavecometome.IcantellthatI
havehadapositiveimpactontheRLCandthataloneiswhatmakesmefeelamazing.Ihave
learnedwaystocommunicate,howtobealeaderandnotfeelasthoughyouareaboveor
overanyone,andhowtobemorerelatabletoothers.Idontbelievethatmybeliefson
leadershiphavechangedbecauseIdontbelievethatthereisasinglerightdefinitionof
leadership.IthinkthatthewayIamaleaderhaschanged.Ihavealwaysmodeledthetypeof
behaviorIwouldlikeotherstoportraybutIthinkthatleadershipshouldbemorepeoplefocused
ratherthangoalfocused.Idothinkthatgoalsneedtobeaccomplished,butIalsothinkitsokay
nowforgoalstochangeorforyoutostopandtakethetimetotalktopeopleandthengobackto
thegoal.Ihavenoticedthatforme,peopleenergizeme.Ihadalmostgivenupongettingto
knowsomeofthepeopleinmyhalluntilonenightwereIsatinastudyloungeandchattedwith
oneofthemoreshygirlsinmyhallandrealizedthatthereishopeforthatgoaltobecomea
reality.IthinkthatcheckinginonpeopleisimportantandIthinkitissomethingthatIhave
addedtomypersonalleadershipphilosophy.
