Thus. electrical energy is converted into mechanical energy. .Principle of DC Motor A current carrying conductor experiences a force in a magnetic field.

Two carbon brushes B1 and B2 are pressed against C1 and C2. The two free ends of the coil are connected to the two split-ring commutators C1 and C2. A potential difference is applied across the brushes by a battery.Construction of DC Motor It consist of a coil which is formed by winding many turns of insulated copper wire over a soft iron core. The core and the coil together form the armature. . It is fixed on the shaft of the motor and kept between the poles of a strong magnet.

AB experiences downward force and vice –versa. Thus the coil rotates in . commutator again come in contact with B1 and B2 but in reversed condition.Working of DC Motor When current flows in the coil along ABCD in a magnetic field each arm experiences a force. the current flows along DCBA. As a result the brushes with which C1 and C2 were in contact have got detached but due to inertia of motion of the coil. Using Fleming left hand rule AB experiences a upward force and CD downward force. Now. So.
