HEDONISM

DEFINITION
Is a school of thought that

argues that pleasure is the

primary or most important
intrinsic good.
The belief that pleasure or
happiness is the most
important goal in life.

PHILOSOPHERS COMMONLY
DISTINGUISH BETWEEN :

PSYCHOLOGICAL HEDONISM
is the view that humans are
psychologically constructed in such a way that
exclusively desire pleasure.

ETHICAL HEDONISM
is the view that our fundamental moral
obligation is to maximize pleasure or happiness.

HEDONIST ETHICS
A classification within

western philosophy that

believes that pleasure is the
only value, and is therefore
the measure and standard of
ethics, morality, right, and
wrong.

As a western philosophy might claim

that a persons happiness is measured as
rightness or be happy, and you will be
behaving correctly because happiness is in itself
correct behavior.
As eastern philosophy might claim
that happiness is the result of rightness or
behave correctly, and you will be happy
because the correct behavior produces
happiness.

ETHICAL HEDONISM
( a perspective theory )

whether or not people pursue

pleasure, they should or
ought to do so. A right action
is productive of pleasure; a
wrong action is productive of
pain.

JOHN STUART MILL

When hungry, seek food; when

poor, seek money; when restless,

seek physical activity.
Those only are happy who have
their minds fixed on some object other
than their own happiness .. Aiming
thus at something else, they find
happiness along the way.

EGOISTIC HEDONISM
THE ETHICAL THEORY
THAT ACHIEVING ONES
OWN HAPPINESS IS THE
PROPER GOAL OF ALL
CONDUCT.

CHRISTIAN HEDONISM
Controversial Christian doctrine current

in some evangelical circles, particularly

those of the reformed tradition . The
term was first coined by reformed
Baptist theologian JOHN PIPER his 1996
book DESIRING GOD: God is most
glorified in us when we are most
satisfied in him. Or: the chief end of man
is to glorify God by enjoying him forever.
