Hello, my name is ... and these are ..., ... and ...

, and today we want

you to think about the following thing: We've all seen the famous Twix commercia
l, with
the left and right Twix. I want you to remember this and think about the followi
ng question: "Which Twix would you eat, the left one or the right one?".
So, in order to find out what the difference is, let me ask you another
question. What's equality? Over the last few days we've hit our heads against th
e walls thinking about what equality really means. Now, we could think about equ
ality as, according to an online dictionary, the state of being equal, especiall
y in status, rights or opportunities. Or, more straightforward, think about it a
s a sky full of stars. They all have different shapes and sizes, but in definiti
on and from our perspective they're still stars and they're all the same.
Of course, there are a lot of ways to look at the concept of equality. T
here is NATURAL EQUALITY, which implies that people have different character and
appearance, but that doesn't mean we have to discriminate each other. The conce
pt for this type of equality is that we all are born equal and should be treated
as such. Also, there's CIVIL EQUALITY which means that we all have equal rights
. Thus, any human being should be given the same rights and freedoms. This type
of equality is directly related to LEGAL EQUALITY, which refers to everyone bein
g the same in front of the law. POLITICAL EQUALITY means that we all have politi
cal opportunities and then there's ECONOMIC EQUALITY. This consists of the right
to receive equal salary and the right to work.
Today we'd like to emphasize upon the most controversial form of equalit
y, SOCIAL EQUALITY. "What's that?", you may ask. Well, everybody has heard about
the concept of racism and sexism, well those are opposite to social equality. P
ractically, it stands for the prohibition of discrimination against anyone on th
e basis of colour, creed, religion, sex or place of birth. And for social equali
ty to happen, well, the society has to do something in order to stop discriminat
ion. But who represents society? Every single one of us right here in this room
and around the world. Let's take the following scenario: Take three men of diffe
rent religions, such as: a muslim, a christian and a buddhist and place them ins
ide a room. What's going to happen? Well nothing, of course, they'll just chat a
bout a common subject. But what happens if one of them is a strong believer and
wants to convert the others to his religion or even worse, a fanatic that won't
respect other people's principles. Well, that's when problems start to appear.Th
us, the idea is that if we believe in the concept of equality, we can open the g
ateway to mutual understanding and worldwide peace.
As a conclusion, we think that social equality can only be achieved if
we treat each other with respect, and let go of the blind pride that's taking ov
er our society. And as Marthin Luther King once said in his famous "I have a dre
am" speech, we hope that, even if it is not currently possible, at least our kid
s will be treated equal despite any difference between them and someone else.
Now that we know what equality is, its categories and we gave some examp
les of inequality, before we answer your questions, let's answer ours: "Which Tw
ix would you eat?". In order to achieve equality, we would need to eat both the
left and the right Twix, so we don't make any discrimination.
