friends,andboyfriend/girlfriendwhospendagreatdealoftimein
theprivatecompanyofthestudent.AccordingtoMorrow&
Gambrell(2011),parentalinvolvementincreasesstudent
achievementintestscores,grades,hashigherattendanceand
lowerretention.

School

Superintendent:Thedailyoperationsofaschooldistrictisoverseen
bythesuperintendent.Theycommunicatedirectlyandcontinually
withtheschoolboardonavarietyoftopicssuchasliteracy
instruction.Thesuperintendentisresponsibleformakingfinancial
decisionsincludingsupplyingtheschoolwithliterarymaterials.
Principal:Managesschoolpolicies.Evaluatesteachersandvarious
staffmembersforresultsandoutcomes.Principalsensurethat
teachersparticipateinPDtoimprovestudentgrowth.
AssistantPrincipal:Helpsfacilitateschoolwidebehaviorplansand
establishcomfortableconditionstooptimizelearningsuccess.
GeneralEducationTeachers:provideinstructiondailyandinteract
bothacademicallyandsociallywiththestudent.Theyarethe
connectionbetweenstudentandsupportsavailablewithintheschool.
Theycanidentifyspecificneedsandconcernsinregardsto
academicsandbehaviorandthereforerefertoothersforadditional
supportsand
ReadingSpecialist:Asabuildingleaderinliteracyinstruction,reading
specialistsprovidedirectinstructiontostudentsonadailybasis.

Readingspecialistsassessstudentsprogressformanyreasonssuch
ascurriculummonitoring,studentdiagnosis,andmonitoringteacher
andschooleffectiveness(Maddaetal.,2011).Theyalsoprovideto
curriculumdevelopmentandimplementation.Readingspecialists
supportstudents,parents,teachersandadministrators(Maddaetal.,
2011).

LiteracyCoach:Asanotherbuildingleaderinliteracyinstruction,
literacycoachesworkdirectlywithteachersandrespondingtotheir
needs.Theymaydemonstrateliteracyinstructiontostudentsforthe
classroomteacher.Dataiscollectedtoprovideteacherswith
informationabouttheirstudentsprogressandinstructionalneeds
(Maddaetal.,2011).
SocialWorker:Socialworkersprovideservicesforstudentswhomay
bestrugglingsociallywiththeirpeers,havingachallenginghomelife,
ormaybegoingthroughadifficulttime.Theyprovideopportunities
forstudentstopracticesocialskillsandrespondingtosocial
situations.Schoolworkerscommunicatewithparentsofstudents,
teachers,supportingteachers,andprincipals.
Psychologist:Psychologistsfacilitatelearningandtheypromotethe
cognitive,socialandpersonaldevelopmentofallstudents.They
developappropriateinterventionsandprogramsforstudents.They
alsoprovideconsultationtoparents,teachers,andotherschool
personnel,andcommunityagenciestoenhancelearning.
ResourceTeachers:Resourceteachersareresponsibleforproviding
curriculumsupportsystemsforstudents,teachers,and
administrators.Theyalsocreatelessonplansforindividual
specialneedsstudentsorforgroupsofstudents.Theycollaborate
withotherteachersconcerninginstructionandmayprovidegeneral
classroomteacherswithinstructionoradviceonhowtoalterlesson
planstomeetIEPrequirements..
SpecialEducationTeachers:ProvidetheLeastRestrictive
environmentthroughaseriesofdifferentmodelsofinstruction,from
fullinclusiontoseparateinstruction,dependingonstudentsneeds
anddisability.Ensuresthataccommodationsandmodificationsare
providedtoaccessthegeneraleducationcurriculumandthe
developmentofIndividualizedEducation
BilingualTeachers:Bilingualteachersplans,organizes,andprovides
instructioninEnglishandinnativelanguageofstudents.Instructionis
consistentandcoordinatedwiththedistrictsinstructionalprogram.
Developsanddeliverslessonplansutilizingabroadrangeof
appropriatedifferentiatedtechniquesandstrategiesaddressingall

aspectsofcommunicationthatdevelopeachstudentsabilitytoread,
write,speak,andlistenincontentareasatlevelsthatensurelearners
meetorexceedlearningtargets.

ELLTeachers:EnglishLanguageLearnerTeachersassistin
administeringrequiredlanguageproficiencyandacademic
achievementtestsfordeterminingplacementforstudents,alongwith
ongoingmonitoringofstudentprogress.ELLteachersalsoassistin
developinglanguageacquisitionsupportplansforallELLstudents
andworkwithclassroomteacherstoimplementplans.ELLteachers
useavarietyofinstructionaltechniquesandteachingstrategiesto
meetdifferentaptitudesandinterestsofstudents,
Paraprofessionals:Aparaprofessionalassiststhespecialeducation
teacher.Theymayberesponsibleforaparticularstudentormayhelp
withawholegrouplesson.Aparaprofessionalsupportsthe
classroomteacheranddoesnotprovidedirectinstruction.
Librarian:Thelibrarianworkswithbothstudentsandteachersto
facilitateaccesstoinformationinawidevarietyofformats,instruct
studentsandteachershowtoacquire,evaluateanduseinformation
andthetechnologyneededinthisprocess,andintroduceschildrento
literatureandotherresourcestobroadentheirhorizons.
SubstituteTeacher:Thesubstituteteacherassumestheroleofa
regularclassroomteacher.Theyimplementclassroombehavior
plans,followinstructionsleftbytheclassroomteacher,communicate
withfacultyandstaff,andmaintainsapositivelearningenvironment.
ParentVolunteers:Parentvolunteersareusedinavarietyofwaysby
school.Somepositionsincludehelpingoutintheclassroomwith
studentsand/orhelpingtheteacherwithotherduties(makingcopies,
hangingworkup,gradingpapers,etc.).Otherresponsibilitiescan
includehelpingoutwithlunchprograms,attendingfieldtrips,and
otherschoolrelatedactivities.
PTA/PTO:Thisformalorganizationconsistsofparents,teacherand
schoolstaff.Thereareavarietyofpositionsincludingpresident,
vicepresident,treasurer,etc.Essentiallythegoalsincorporate
volunteerismofparents,communityinvolvementandpromotesopen
communicationbetweenparentsandstaff.Theyholdfundraisersfor
supplementaleducationalmaterialsandexperiences.PTOsalso
provideaforumforsharinginformationofissuesthatimpactthe
childreninthecommunity.UltimatelythePTOsupportsthe
educationalgoalsoftheschoolwhichimpactsthestudentinpositive
ways.

Tutors:Tutorsprovideextrasupportforthestudents.Tutorscanwork
insidetheschoolorbehiredforindividualtutoringsessionsinthe
studentshome.Schoolhiredtutorscanbeclassroomteachersthat
stayforanafterschoolprogramorcansimplyvolunteertheirtimeto
tutorstudents.Parentscanhiretutorsformoreindividualized
instructionfortheirchild.

Community

PublicLibrary:Publiclibrariesexposechildrentogreatquantitiesof
printandmeaningfullanguageopportunitiesthatarecrucialtoreading
achievement.Studentshaveaccesstomaterialsthatmatchreading
levelandinterest.Librariesprovideteachingforchildreninhowtouse
resourcesfortheirlearning.Publiclibrariesprovideaccesstoglobal
resourcesthroughanetworkofpublicandacademiclibraries,
websites,thematicresources,localcommunityresourcesandhuman
resources.Librariesprovidesupportforreadingprogramsthrough
schoolwideliteracypromotion.
CommunityPrograms:Communityprogramscanprovideafterschool
programsthatprovideapotentiallystrongbasefornurturingchildrens
literacydevelopment,andforprovidingavarietyoftypesofliteracy
experiences.Theycansupporttheliteracyprogramsthroughtutoring
andhomeworkhelp.Somecommunityprogramsmayalsoprovide
adultliteracyprograms.

LocalSchoolCouncil:LocalSchoolCouncilcanapprovehowschool
fundsandresourcesareallocatedtowardsschoolsliteracyprograms
andmaterials.
Colleges/Schools:Collegesorschoolinthecommunitycanprovide
programsandservicesforfamiliesofchildrenandadolescentswho
wishtoimprovetheirreadingabilitiesorenrichtheirreading
experiences.Collaborationwithcolleges/schoolsprovideopportunities
tonetworkwithotherprofessionalsthroughprofessional
developments.Italsopromotesrelationshipsbetweenfaculty
membersandstudentswithotherprofessionalorganizationsinthe
fieldofliteracyeducation.
