filletweld.Althoughthenextsectionofthistutorialcoverswelding
symbolsindetails,here'saheadstart:Whenaweldtype(fillet,
groove,etc.)appearsonthebottomsideofthehorizontalline,it
meanstheweldisperformedclosesttothearrow.Whereyousee
theweldshapedepictedontopoftheline,itmeanstheweldis
performedontheothersideoftheplate,awayfromthearrow.When
theshapeisincludedaboveandbelowthehorizontallineinthe
symbol,bothsidesofthejointmustbewelded.

Lapjointsarenotweldedwherethetwofacesmeet,butononeor
bothedgesthatbookendthefaces.Generally,afilletweldwilldothe
jobforthesejoints,butit'simportanttohavegoodfitupsothetwo
facessitflatagainsteachother.
EdgeJoint

Anedgejointlooksalittlelikeacornerjoint.Thedifferenceisthat
thetwosidesdon'tjointataperpendicularangle,butinsteadshare
thesameplane(orsomethingakintoit).

Cornerjointsbringtogethertwoedgesoftheworkplatesthatmeet
ataperpendicularangle,oralongtwodifferentplanes.(Whenthe
plateslieonthesameplane,youhaveeitherabuttjointoredge
joint.)Asillustratedinthedrawingontheleft,acornerjointmaybe
open(top)orclosed(bottom).Thetwosidesaretypicallyjoinedbya
filletweld.
