Sticky Note

Peter (1) Karleskint

SCENE 1
BEN sits at a bus stop patiently
awaiting his transportation. In
his hand lies a stack of yellow
sticky notes. In the other hand he
holds a black marker. He ponders
the stack of notes in his hands
for a moment as if he wishes to
write something down. In from one
of the sides comes a young woman,
NATALIE. She appears depressed as
she stands next to the bench where
BEN is sitting. BEN takes notice
of her as she stands there
silently.
BEN

Long day?
NATALIE
What was that?
BEN
Long day? Why dont you have a seat here?
NATALIE
No, thats okay. Thank you but Im fine.
BEN
Please, I dont bite. Well maybe I do but not hard I
promise! Have a seat, come on! Have you never talked to
a random stranger before?
NATALIE
Laughing
Actually, my parents always told me never to talk to
strangers.
BEN
Oh, is that so?
NATALIE
Mhmm.
BEN
Standing
Then lets not be strangers.

Offering hand

My name is Ben.
NATALIE
Taking hand
Natalie.
BEN
Thats a beautiful name.
NATALIE
Thank you.
BEN
Okay, introductions have been put in order. Will you
have a seat now, Madame? If you dont I may be forced
to activate executive order 54.
NATALIE
What might that be?
BEN
Sitting on the ground
If you wont sit there then I wont either.
NATALIE smiles but still doesnt
move.
Youre a tough girl Ill give you that. I dont think
Ive seen you around this stop before. What brings you
to town?
NATALIE
Sad
My Grandmother. She passed recently.
BEN
Getting up
Im so sorry.
NATALIE
Gives him a sad smile
I was helping clean out her house. She was such a kooky
woman. I found a bunch of stashed cash hidden around
the house in old pickle jars, containers in the
freezer, inside the mattress. It just reminded me of
all the crazy things she used to do, you know? She had
these stories she used to tell about what it was like
when she was a kid. The way things changed for her

mustve been tough. I think back and I always remember

her pulling me aside one day and saying, Natalie, no
matter where you go or what you decide to do, always
believe in yourself and never forget your dreams. I
was a dancer, and she just never gave up on me.
Pause.
I dont even know why Im telling you this.
BEN
Sometimes we confide in those we hardly know because we
convince ourselves that a stranger can never hurt us.
NATALIE
Is that so? Well, Ben, I thought you said we werent
strangers, anymore.
BEN
Smiling
Well I guess youre right.
Sits on bench and gestures for
NATALIE to join him.
Are you going to be around this part of town any more?
NATALIE
Finally sitting
Yeah, there are still a lot of things to go through.
Its going to be at least another week before all of
her stuff is sorted.
BEN
I see
NATALIE
Pointing to the sticky notes
What are those for?
BEN
Theyre kind of a part of me. I dont leave home
without them. Let me show you what I mean.
Pops off cap to marker and starts
to write on a sticky note. NATALIE
being nosy tries to see what hes
writing.
NATALIE
What are you doing?

Sticky Note

Peter (4) Karleskint

BEN
Youll see.
Rips off sticky note and hands it
to NATALIE
Here.
NATALIE
For me?
Takes the note
BEN
Go ahead, read it.
NATALIE
Youve got a strong heart and an even richer soul.
Smiling a bit
What makes you say that? You hardly even know me!
BEN
There are some things you just know about a person.
NATALIE
Is this what you do with your time? Pass out sticky
notes to random strangers?
BEN
Sometimes people need to be lifted up, know that
theyre worth something.
NATALIE
How can you enjoy something so trivial?
BEN
Theres more power behind words than youd realize.
Even a complete stranger can make an impact on
somebodys life.
NATALIE
But what do you get out of passing notes out to random
people?
BEN
The pleasure of knowing that maybe my note made their
day just a little bit better.

Sticky Note

Peter (5) Karleskint

NATALIE
Youre an odd one arent you?
BEN
The oddest people make the biggest changes. One day,
miss, Im going to change the world.
NATALIE
You sure are a confident one, arent you?
BEN
I try to be when I can.
NATALIE
So why do you do this, Ben?
BEN
Do what?
NATALIE
Pass out sticky notes to people. Whats the real
reason?
BEN
Sad
Well, you see, a long time ago I wasnt whom you see
before you now. I was lost, broken, never able to grasp
who it is that I was trying to be.
NATALIE
What happened?
BEN
My mom. She always saw the greatness in people; I was
always the one to see the flaws but her, if they had a
positive quality no matter how small she could see it.
She would point it out and help them grow into it. She
had this effect on people; she was the light when she
walked into the room, the life of the party so to
speak.
NATALIE
Realizing
Something happen to her?
BEN

Sticky Note

Peter (6) Karleskint

Sad smile
I think I was fifteen at the time. She was diagnosed
with cancer. A tumor in the brain that had developed
too large to be able to be removed, there was nothing
the doctors could do. We had a final summer together,
finishing things on her bucket list: revisiting
favorite spots, making amends, saying goodbyes. Her
condition worsened until she was permanently bed bound.
I was by her side, every day, every hour, from dusk
until dawn. I watched her go from bad to worse.
Sometimes I can still see her struggling. In the moment
of her death though something happened. Right before
she passed she looked at me, touched my heart with her
finger, and said, Its whats in here that counts.
Never forget to see the good in people. Then she
simply closed her eyes and drifted away.
NATALIE
Im so sorry.
BEN
Hey, chin up. Sometimes there are things out there that
we cant control. Its not about what happens to us
that makes us who we are; its how we choose to handle
it.
NATALIE
You seem to have handled it pretty well.
BEN
Half smiling
Things arent always what they appear. I actually
struggled. A lot. It wasnt an easy journey to go on.
She was all I had. I lived with some relatives of mine
after until I was old enough to move out. Now I live on
my own in an apartment nearby. I used to be in a really
dark place.
NATALIE
What changed?
BEN
I found her Bucket List. The majority of it was crossed
out but there was one thing she hadnt marked off, in
fact it was circled.
NATALIE

Sticky Note

Peter (7) Karleskint

What was it?

BEN
Ill never forget what it said. Give a compliment to a
stranger, every day, for the rest of my life.
NATALIE
Thats amazing. She mustve been a real great mother,
Ben.
BEN
She was. That just shocked me. Even in the end of her
days, in her final moments, she was still thinking
about everybody else. She was the most powerful and
courageous woman I will ever know.
NATALIE
Thats really something, but why thePoints to the sticky notes
BEN
Well after I saw her Bucket list I took a marker and
slowly crossed it off. When I put the list down I
noticed a stack of sticky notes lying on the counter.
From that moment fourth I promised that shed live on,
that my mother would live through me. And ever since
Ive been using these sticky notes to change the world.
For her. For my mom.
NATALIE
Ben, thats the sweetest thing Ive ever heard. I can
only imagine what you went through.
BEN
Hey, now. Youre going through something right now.
Puts hand on her shoulder
What youre going through is important, dont let
anybody tell you anything different.
NATALIE
Thank you. So much.
BEN
So tell me about being a dancer.
NATALIE

Sticky Note

Peter (8) Karleskint

You dont want to hear about that.

BEN
Of course I do.
NATALIE
Theres nothing much to tell, I was a dancer, I went to
class and I loved every minute of it.
BEN
Uh huh, sure, nothing to tell. Howd you get into dance
in the first place?
NATALIE
Oh, its kind of silly.
BEN
The best things are. Go on.
NATALIE
My grandma had this record player. It was the oldest
thing you ever did see, but it was taken care of. The
bottom was wood and polished every day. When you came
near it you could smell the polisher on it. The top of
it where the sound comes out was this massive brass
shell that used to look like it could swallow me whole
when I was a young girl. I remember putting records on
it with my grandma, there was one record in particular.
I never knew the name when I was a kid but I will
always remember that music, its always ringing in my
ears. When we put that record on, it would spin and I
would always be able to see the vibration and watch as
my imagination took over. Soon Id be on the floor,
spinning and twirling. I could feel the music living
through my body and extending out of my hands and feet.
The feeling of being one with the world around you and
of feeling the raw, pure emotion of the music, theres
nothing else quite like it. From that moment on I knew
Id be a dancer, some day. I knew there was nothing
else out there for me. I knew because of here, my
grandma. She was a wonderful woman.
BEN
I think her and my mom would get along.
NATALIE
Smiling

Sticky Note

Peter (9) Karleskint

I think so, too.

BEN
Have you ever found out what the record was?
NATALIE
My grandma was never good at putting things back where
they needed to go. No labels, or covers. Its one thing
I loved about her but its also why going through her
things is so difficult. She was an odd woman, but I
loved her all the more for it.
BEN
What did it sound like?
NATALIE
Its been so long I dont remember it very well, but I
think thats one of the things I love about that
memory. That feeling will never leave me and I dont
even remember what it was that Id dance to every day
when Id visit her. It was a moment I shared with her
and maybe when I see her again we can dance together to
that same tune. Its something with her Ill have to
look forward to. To be with her and to hear that record
again.
BEN
Thats something pretty special.
NATALIE
Smiling
It sure is.
BEN
Theres something I have to do. Im thinking that Ill
run into you again tomorrow.
NATALIE
I certainly hope so.
BEN
I certainly hope so, too.
Waves to NATALIE and runs off.
Scene ends.
SCENE 2
On her way to the bus stop the

Sticky Note

Peter (10) Karleskint

next day, NATALIE walks on a
sidewalk until she notices a
yellow sticky note on a nearby
pole. She walks past it at first
but then walks backward until the
note comes into view again. Close
up on note (There are some things
worth remembering). Smiling she
takes the note and moves on. Again
as she walks by another note comes
into view. She walks to this one
and the note reads, Every moment
is special. Again she takes it
and walks on. Another pole,
another note (Be who you are, not
who youre told to be). Again
(Open your heart). Again (Reach
for the stars and then go
farther). Again (Never give up,
never give in). Finally NATALIE
reaches the bus stop where she
finds a note on the bench that
says, Sit Here. Following her
orders she does so. She glances
around until finally she looks
down at her feet to see yet
another note and this one says,
Walk twenty paces to the right
and then take a look behind the
tree. NATALIE does as she is told
counting out her paces. At last
she reaches a large tree and scans
it for a minute. She starts to
hear the strumming of a guitar.
After a few seconds she decides to
check it out. As she goes around
the tree BEN is seen visibly
strumming to the tune of a guitar
humming some melody. To his side
is a box where two ballet slippers
are together and on them there is
one last note. Natalie, no matter
where you go or what you decide to
do, always believe in yourself and
never forget your dreams is what
is read on the note.

Sticky Note

Peter (11) Karleskint

BEN
I know you dont remember the record but I thought
maybe we could dance to our own music.
NATALIE
Stunned. Walks slowly toward BEN
and stops. She glances up at him
until finally she cuts him off mid
strum and hugs him.
Thank you.
BEN
Standing up to meet the hug and
putting the guitar down
Not so trivial now, is it?
NATALIE
Maybe you will change the world.
BEN
Im hoping so.
After the embrace ends, hands
NATALIE the slippers.
Would you like me to escort you back to the bus stop?
NATALIE
Thoughtful
Actually, I have a better idea. Do you still have those
sticky notes?
BEN
Smiling and handing the sticky
notes to NATALIE
I never leave home without them.
NATALIE
Lets go!
NATALIE takes BEN by the hand and
leads him off. She holds the
slippers and the notes in one
hand. BEN follows close behind
still holding her hand and keeping
track of his marker nearby in his
other hand. As they are led off
the scene slowly focuses on the
guitar laying upwards a bit, the
scene slowly fades. Blackout.
