Dear Teachers

:
The Rochester City School District Arts Department in partnership with Rise Up Rochester, Inc.
announces its sixth annual Stop the Violence Billboard Contest and invites all K-12 students
to participate. Because so much violence impacts our students, the Stop the Violence Billboard
Contest is the perfect opportunity for our students to take a proactive stand against violence and
to teach about violence prevention, crime reporting and making healthy decisions.
Guidelines
Students are invited to create artwork on the theme “Love builds. Violence destroys.” First,
second, third and fourth place elementary and secondary winners will have their artwork
displayed in the fall on billboards near your school.
1. Artwork must be created on 8 ½ X 11 inches paper and orientated horizontally. Paint,
marker, pen, and pencil are acceptable. Collage, photo, and computer generated
artwork is not acceptable.
2. On the back of artwork please include the student’s name, school, grade and teacher.
No artwork will be accepted if it contains this information on the front of the artwork.
3. Artwork must be sent to the RCSD Arts Department no later than March 25, 2016.
4. If classrooms need support with supplies, please contact Elvira.papa@RCSDK12.org.
In addition, if you would like someone to speak to your classroom on violence prevention and/or
provide a context for the billboard contest, please email RiseUpRochester@yahoo.com. Thank
you for helping students to establish and maintain a nonviolent culture!
Sincerely

Elizabeth Hanan,
