EXT. COUNTRY ROAD - DAY

Summer heat shimmers from the cracked asphalt as a Toyota Prius
winds its way down the dusty road.
INT. PRIUS - DAY
A split heart charm dangles from a silver chain over a sweaty t-shirt.
The shirt belongs to James Mallet, 20's. He drains a water bottle and
tosses the empty into the back seat.
The temperature gauge on the dash reads "104". He reaches back into
a cooler and grabs another bottle.
GPS VOICE
In one hundred yards, you will reach your
destination.
EXT. END OF THE ROAD - DAY
James pops the trunk and hauls out a backpack. He tosses it over his
shoulder and heads for the trees.
EXT. WOODS - DAY
James pushes aside the thick undergrowth, a large walking stick now
aiding his hike.
EXT. WOODS - LATER
James spots a dilapidated cabin beyond the trees.
SNAP! His walking stick is caught by an animal trap. Rusted out and
with half a chain, it's a wonder the thing still works. He steps on the
trap and pulls the stick clear.
He marches on keeping one eye on the eerie cabin as the distant
sound of thunder rumbles from the horizon.
EXT. CLEARING - LATER

A simple cross lays on the ground. Fallen over and covered in leaves, a
forgotten memorial in need of care.
James sets down his pack and gets to work. He carefully brushes aside
the leaves and straightens the cross. A name is legible on the
weathered wood - Katie. He hangs his heart chain over the cross.
He lays against his pack and pulls out his cell phone. He swipes
through a few pictures: James and Katie. He reaches the video he was
searching for and hits play.
ON THE PHONE
Katie's face fills the screen.
KATIE
Hey it's me. I got your message, sorry I
was in the shower. Anyway, yeah hiking
this weekend sounds awesome. I so just
need to get away from work and stuff so
yeah, lets just do it.
Katie kisses the camera
KATIE (CONT'D)
Come find me when you're ready.
BACK TO SCENE
BOOM. James jumps as a loud thunder clap rumbles from above.
A rain drop splatters on the screen. Then another. James wipes the
phone on his shirt and slips it in his pocket.
He grabs a hoodie from his pack and pulls it on. The rain gets harder,
the thunder louder. This is not going as planned. James gathers his
things and heads for the trees.
Oops, almost forgot, he does a double take and grabs the heart chain
from the cross.
EXT. WOODS - NIGHT
James trudges through the woods with only a small flashlight to light
the way. A lighting flash illuminates the cabin beyond the trees. James
considers his options.

EXT. CABIN - NIGHT

Old animal traps hang from the porch like wind chimes. An old
kerosene lantern dangles from the end.
INT. CABIN - NIGHT
The rusted lock groans, the door squeals open as James pushes his
way into the dilapidated house.
JAMES
Hello? Anyone here? No? Great.
His flashlight takes in the abandoned interior - small and cramped, this
will have to do.
He scrapes aside the mess on the floor: leaves, trash, old newspapers.
One item catches his eye. The edge of a photo. He brings it to the
light for a closer look.
It's an old black and white photo of the cabin. A wild looking Hunter
and a young girl stand next to several dead animals that hang from the
porch.
He turns over the photo. On the back, scribbled in pencil - "Hunter and
Daughter - Fall 1912."
He sets the photo aside and lays back against his backpack. He pulls
out his phone and scrolls through the photos.
James pauses on one. James and Katie hold up two halves of the split
heart charm. James zooms in on the charm each has their names
engraved on it and a date: April 8th.
James pulls out the chain from his pocket, his half of the charm dangles
from the end. He holds it up to the phone and matches it against
Katie's half.
EXT. CLEARING - FLASHBACK - DAY
James and Katie lay next to each other, two angels in love. Katie holds
up her half of the pendant. James holds up his and they connect the
heart. James holds up his phone and snaps the now familiar selfie.
Katie grabs a handful of autumn leaves and dumps them over James.
She jumps up, bracing for retaliation. He tosses a handful of leaves

back. A friendly war between lovers. Katie runs for the trees to take
cover.
James checks that she can't see him. He pulls out a small jewelry box
from his pocket. Opens it one last time to make sure the engagement
ring is still there.
James sets down the box and covers it in leaves. He pulls out a note
with the word "DIG" written on it. He sets it on the pile with a single
red rose to hold it in place. James smiles. He's ready.
BANG! A gunshot echoes. James leaps to his feet.
JAMES
Katie?
Katie crawls from the trees. James runs to her.
JAMES (CONT'D)
Katie!!
James gently rolls her over. Blood seeps from her wound and stains
her white jacket bright red.
JAMES (CONT'D)
Katie! No! Katie!
Katie shakes as her body goes into shock. Blood seeps into her lungs
makes it hard to breathe.
James looks around for help. He spots a young hunter, ten or eleven,
dressed in cammo by the tree line, rifle still in hand. The young boy
drops the rifle and runs.
Katie's eyes plead with James for life.
YOUNG GIRL (V.O.)
(whisper)
Help me.
BOOM!
INT. CABIN - NIGHT
James bolts awake from his disturbing dream. His breath turns cold.
YOUNG GIRL

(whisper)
Help me.
James scrambles to find his flash light. He flips it on and gets a brief
glimpse of a girl's pale dead face before his flashlight bulb POPS off for
good.
JAMES
Oh Jeez.
James bangs the flashlight but it's not coming back on.
JAMES (CONT'D)
Hey I just came from the storm. I didn't
think anyone lived here.
BANG!
James pulls out his phone and turns on the flashlight. His phone blinks
LOW BATTERY then turns off.
BANG BANG CLINK CLINK
He follows the sound to the front door. It bangs as the wind blows it
back and forth. Outside the animal traps clink together in the breeze.
EXT. CABIN - NIGHT
James takes down the kerosene lantern and smells it. A little left. He
pulls out a lighter and lights the wick.
As he turns to enter the house a shadow of a face appears in the
doorway and SLAMS SHUT the door with a bang. He stumbles back
into the traps. One of them falls to the ground. He steps on it and
SNAP! His foot is stuck.
James falls back and struggles to open the trap.
JAMES
Just let me grab my stuff and I'll get out
of your way.
Finally free he bursts back through the door...
INT. CABIN - CONTINUOUS

...to a floor covered in animal traps set and ready to snap.

A child's cry drifts from the darkness. James carefully tip toes around
the traps.
INT. BACK DOOR - CONTINUOUS
The cries lead to the back door. A rusted chain leads from under the
door and up the stairs to the second floor.
He turns the handle. Locked. He grabs the chain and tries to look up
the stairs. Static erupts from his cell phone.
KATIE
Come find me when you're ready.
James pulls it from his pocket. The video of Katie keeping repeating
like a broken record.
KATIE (CONT'D)
Come find me when you're ready - Come
find me when you're ready - come find
me when you're ready
The static returns in a loud uncomfortable hiss. The chain pulls tight
up the stairs. James thinks for a moment. He picks up the chain and
follows it.
INT. ATTIC BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
The chain leads to a dark corner bathed in shadow. A child's whimper
drifts form the darkness.
JAMES
Hello? Are you OK? Sorry if I scared you.
James tugs at the chain and a young girl's foot slides out into the light.
An animal trap locked around her shoe, the girl is curled up in the fetal
position. Her lips blue, she shivers as though freezing.
YOUNG GIRL
Help me. Please.
James struggles to force the trap open.
BOOM BOOM. Something big pounds on the back door. BOOM BOOM.

James turns towards the sound then looks down. The girl has
disappeared. James looks around the empty room.
JAMES
What the...?
AT THE BACK DOOR
The door bursts open. Lightning flashes offer a quick glimpse of THE
HUNTER as he enters the cabin.
Heavy boots with snow spikes stomp through the door. His rugged
clothes are covered in a wolf pelt. The head of the wolf serves as the
hat, obscuring his face.
Animal traps dangle from The Hunter's dirty leather gloves. A fresh
rabbit carcass drops to the floor with a thud.
The Hunter moves into the cabin
UPSTAIRS
James freezes. The sound of snow spikes scrape and squeal as the
hunter plods his way through the house.
James breathes louder as the fear creeps in. The scraping gets
closer...then stops.
James holds up the lantern as he peers down the stairway. Nothing.
He turns and comes face to face with the hunter.
SMASH!
An animal trap swings down with force and smashes the lantern from
his hand. James stumbles down the stairs as he scrambles for his life.
INT. BACK DOOR - NIGHT
James crashes to the landing. He spots the back door now open, a
bright white light cascades through it.
James looks up just in time to see the hunter lunge towards him.
James scrambles his way through the light of the back door and
emerges in...

EXT. WINTER FOREST - DAY

...snow?
Behind him a creak as the door slams shut. He turns back but the door
has gone.
JAMES
NO!!
James crawls over to where the door stood. He scrapes away at the
snow where the door once stood.
JAMES (CONT'D)
No no no.
A splash of red peeks out from the snow. He digs a little further and
uncovers a red rose. He pushes aside the snow and pulls out a familiar
note in his own handwriting:
DIG
He digs. Snow flies out of the hole. The snow gives way to reveal a
rusted chain anchored to the frozen ground.
James grabs the chain and pulls it up. It kicks up snow as he follows it
for a few feet. He digs down the chain and finds...an animal trap
snapped tightly around a child's shoe.
He digs a little further. The shoe is attached to a leg, the leg to a body.
James pulls the trap apart, releases the foot and tosses the trap aside.
James digs as the young girl's body slowly emerges from the snow. He
gently lifts her lifeless frame into his arms.
From behind, a click as a door creaks open. James turns to see the
door standing back in the snow, cracked open.
INT. BACK DOOR - NIGHT
James carries the body of the young girl back into the cabin and gently
lays her down on the floor.
The Hunter stands in the doorway. James steps back in fear but the
Hunter makes no move to attack.
The Hunter kneels down next to the girl and gently brushes the wet

hair from her cold, blue face. He lifts her head to his chest and holds
her close.
They separate. The color has returned to the girl's face. She looks
normal. Alive. She smiles.
The Hunter takes his daughters hand and turns to leave. She breaks
from him and runs over to James. She leans in and whispers.
YOUNG GIRL
Come and find her when you're ready.
She slips something in James's hand...the other half of the heart
shapes pendant: "James - April 8th" is engraved on it.
James looks up. They are gone.
He pulls out the chain from inside his shirt and matches the charm
back together. A perfect fit.
FADE OUT.
