No. 20.

In all of recorded history only ten individuals are mentioned in the Bible as having had
God speak to them directly. And even those instances are questioned by some scholars
who believe it was not him who was speaking, but rather a spirit being or angel speaking
on his behalf.
However, the original Bible writers knew the difference between God and angels quite
well, as evidenced by the many instances when they did specify it was an angel speaking.
The Bible speaks truth and we must not distort its words. When it says it is God
speaking to someone, it means he himself is communicating. When it says differently, it
means what it says, and that he is using some other means than himself as a spokesman
on his behalf.
The ten persons mentioned in the Bible as having been spoken to directly by God,
himself are:

One may ask; how do we know it was truly God speaking in those instances? If the verse
says it was God speaking when it was not, that would be tantamount to an untruth.

Since God is incapable of lying, scripture he inspires is also incapable of untruth. So this
means we should take it to mean what it says.
When we speak of those individuals who were addressed personally by God (YHWH),
we are in truly rarified air. Even Enoch, one of only two individuals who are said in the
Bible to “have walked with God (YHWH or Jehovah)” is not known to have been spoken
to by God directly. If anyone comes along and claims God has spoken to him or her
personally, while not entirely impossible, it is highly improbable and they are more than
likely, either delusional or lying.
How then does God almighty communicate with us as individuals in his human family?
There is no secret to it, God does what he has always been doing. He is the same
yesterday today and tomorrow. If we look at scripture and the ways he communicated
with people in the past, we will have a pretty good idea how he may choose to
communicate with people in our time.

There are a wide variety of examples in the Bible where God used Dreams to get the
attention of individuals in an extraordinary way. Here is a sampling, showing the
diversity of people and circumstances under which he employed this method of

*Urim and Thummim, used in Cleromancy is a form of sortition, (casting of lots), in which an outcome

is determined by means that normally would be considered random, such as the rolling of dice, but are
sometimes believed to reveal the will of God, or other supernatural entities. The Urim and Thummim were
held and used by the high priest for use in determining God’s viewpoint when it was otherwise evasive. The
metho, by virtue of its nature would be limited to simple yes/no and either/or questions. It was not a
method by which a great deal of information could be divulged, such as in dreams, visions or direct
communications. It was no substitute for the written word which contains the full body of information God
wants us to know today.

Visions were a means by which a great deal of information could be delivered quickly or
even instantly. The cliché a picture is worth a thousand words holds true. The mind of
humans is designed to absorb and process visual images. This explains how a single
painting, photograph or film strip can relate a whole story quickly and efficiently. Here
are examples where God planted such visions (pictures) in the minds of people he
wanted to divulge information to by means of his Holy Spirit.

THROUGH NATURAL SENSES (as Guided by the Holy Spirit)
We each receive information from a wide variety of external sources. Our parents,
teachers, friends, politicians, ministers, rabbis, the media and others all plant thoughts
in our heads. We process them and either accept or reject the information according to
our own desires and disposition. Can we be so naïve to think God almighty doesn’t have
the same ability? Here are some scriptural examples which infer he also plants thoughts
in our heads.
DBY Jeremiah

25:1 The word that ‘came’ [see Strongs definition below] to Jeremiah
concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, the king of
Judah (that is, the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon),

There are numerous instances when dreams and visions are cited as the means by which
prophets received communications from God. However this was not the only way God
communicated with them. The bible also indicates the word “came” (some Bibles say
“occurred”) to Ezekiel, Daniel, Isaiah, Haggai, Hosea, Jonah, Micah and others. These
instances are not cited as dreams, visions or paranormal happenings. God’s word merely
says these things “occurred” or came into their minds, undoubtedly under the control of
God’s will and his spirit.
When the Bible says it ‘came” to them we have the following meanings for that;
“Came” – Hebrew, hâyâh ‫ היה‬Strong’s H-1961 with its roots in H-1933
Thayer/BDB Definition:
1) to be, become, come to pass, exist, happen, fall out
1a1) ----1a1a) to happen, fall out, occur, take place, come about, come to pass
1a1b) to come about, come to pass

1a3d) to accompany, be with

1b2) to be done, be finished, be gone
From the Hebrew root ‫ הוה‬/ ‫ הוא‬H1933 hâvâ' / hâvâh
to be, become, exist, happen
Thus, the word that came to Jeremiah, was brought about, or established in his mind by God. It
was the same with fellow prophets and other important people in the Bible where the word
“came” to them.

Jesus alludes to a similar phenomenon at Matthew 16:17 GNB where he says to Peter;
"Good for you, Simon son of John!" answered Jesus. "For this truth did not come to you from
any human being, but it was given to you directly by my Father in heaven”.

The apostle Paul describes himself as having a similar experience at Galatians 1:12”
ESV Galatians

1:12 For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it
through a revelation of Jesus Christ.

Jesus gave his closest disciples clues as to the working of this process at John 14; 26,
when facing impending death, and near the end of his earthly ministry, he declared;
BBE John

14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will be
your teacher in all things and will put you in mind of everything I have said to you.

Or as another translation puts it;
DRB John

14:26 But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he
will teach you all things and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I shall have said to you.

In the Book of Romans, Paul makes a general statement which cannot be construed as
anything other than a force effecting one’s mind. There he speaks to an audience of
Christians and says;
DBY Romans

8:16 The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are children of God.

Or as another version puts it;
NLT Romans

8:16 For his Holy Spirit speaks to us deep in our hearts and tells us that we are
God's children.

This is clearly referring to be a mental phenomenon, something which was going on in
their minds as “children of God”. However there is still more to be learned about the
type of communication Paul was referring to.
If we have a curious mind, we may wonder just what encompasses being seen as
“children of God” in his mind. Where a quick glance may make it appear Paul is

referring to people in general or even to all who see themselves as Christians, employing
the synergy principal takes us to a place of keener understanding.
Immediate context found in the next verse adds a requirement for being one of God’s
children in the precise sense Paul is speaking of;
MKJV Romans

8:16 And if we are children, then we are heirs; heirs of God and joint-heirs with
Christ; so that if we suffer with Him, we may also be glorified together.

Lest there be some misconception that the children of God Paul is speaking of includes mankind
in general as joint heirs with Christ, that notion is dispelled at Romans 9:8
Romans 9:8 That is, it is not by being children through physical descent that people
become children of God; it is the children of the promise that are counted as the heirs.

The children of God he is referring to are those he further describes at Eph. 5:1-6. in
greater detail.
NJB Ephesians

5:1 As God's dear children, then, take him as your pattern, NLT 2 Live a life filled with
love for others, following the example of Christ, who loved you and gave himself as a sacrifice to take
away your sins. And God was pleased, because that sacrifice was like sweet perfume to him. NJB 3
Among you there must be not even a mention of sexual vice or impurity in any of its forms, or greed:
this would scarcely become the holy people of God! ERV 4. Also, there must be no evil talk among you.
Don't say things that are foolish or filthy. These are not for you. But you should be giving thanks to God.
NLT 5 You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and
of God. For a greedy person is really an idolater who worships the things of this world. ERV6. Don't let
anyone fool you with words that are not true. God gets very angry when people who don't obey him talk
like that.

That these ones actually constitute a small number and not people in general or even all people
who call themselves Christians is borne out further by what Jesus said at Matthew 7:13, 14, 2123.
ESV Matthew

7:13-14 13 "Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that
leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way
is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
Matthew 7:21-23 21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of
heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will
say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name,
and do many mighty works in your name?' 23 And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew
you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'

Whether or not God chooses to plant his thoughts into the minds of faithless ones is and
always will be entirely his own option. The Bible assures us that he does so with the
mind of believers, those who he considers “The Children of God”.

By MEANS of the SPIRIT (H.S.)

Holy Spirit was and is the means God has at his disposal for executing his will in all its

NLT Galatians

This verse equates a person’s receiving Holy Spirit with faith first (believing), inferring
that faith is a perquisite along the lines of Heb. 11:6;
Heb. 11:6 No one can please God without faith. Whoever goes to God must believe that God
exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

When we refer to God’s ‘word’ in scriptural terms we can be speaking of two different
entities bearing the same spelling.

There is Christ, his son, who is described as the ‘Word’ –and there is inspired Holy
scripture, which is also described as his ‘word’ in the Bible. Both are ways he uses in
communicating with us as his human family.
When Jesus Christ speaks, he is speaking the mind of God. The thoughts he is
communicating to us are God’s thoughts. As such, he is the ‘Word’.
When scripture speaks to us, it likewise communicates God’s thoughts. As such, it is
properly referred to as the ‘word’ of God.

Scripture discloses God will not do anything he has not revealed to his servants the
ASV Amos

3:7 Surely the Lord Jehovah will do nothing, except he reveal his secret unto his
servants the prophets.

Scripture also reveals that in the last days he would pour out his spirit on all mankind
and there would be prophets and visionaries.
Acts 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, God declares, that I will pour out of My
Spirit upon all mankind, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy [telling forth the
divine counsels] and your young men shall see visions (divinely granted appearances), and your
old men shall dream [divinely suggested] dreams.

When true prophets speak, that is those humans who God authorizes to speak what he
wants said, they communicate God’s thoughts and not their own. For further
explanation of prophets and prophecy see;

According to the Bible God is omniscient and along with that comes the ability to read
our minds. In the Bible the mind and the figurative heart are both mental functions
which some Bible translators have been known to interchange with one another.
However, more accurately, the mind is that portion which processes information and
the figurative heart is that portion which causes one to act on the information which is
processed. All this occurs on a mental level. It is only when action is taken due to the
information processed that it becomes an action, a physical phenomena. Thoughts are
the initial elements introduced in a sequence leading to action. (See chart; )

God’s spirit is the channel (the means) he uses to plant his thoughts into an individual’s
mind. One’s own inclination and desires will determine what action or behavior one
exhibits as a result of the thoughts he plants. Likewise, Evil Spirits and others who
oppose God are also able to plant thoughts in our minds just as those we come into
every day contact with can. God will judge us by the actions we take in response to those
thoughts as well as how we respond to the thoughts he introduces by means of his Holy

While we recognize that God gives us helpers in men who might lead us to his word and
the truths of God, we must not lose sight of the fact that it is God and his word which
remain the only real source of unblemished truth. It is not a charismatic evangelist, an
organization, a group or any kind of religious assembly he uses to call his sheep. It is the
Voice of Jesus Christ, the truth of Scripture and the Holy Spirit which contain our hope
for salvation and leads us to the father so we might embrace his ways.
If or when God speaks to us through anyone other than his prophets, it is to direct us to
his own sources, namely Jesus Christ, the Scriptures (his Word) and his Holy Spirit.
Men direct others to themselves or their organizations and in so doing only perpetuate
the imperfection they themselves possess. God’s spirit and his word direct us to God
YHWH, the almighty, through his only begotten son Jesus Christ.
Only on the rarest of occasions in the past did he himself reveal anything new and
original through the auspices of humans who were not in a close relationship with him.
That is not to say he can’t or that he never will, for as we know from the Bible “anything
is possible with God”. However if it is really God-given truth that such an exception
might reveal, we will never find conflict with YHWH’s primary sources, namely Jesus
Christ, the inspired scriptures, and what He transmits through Holy Spirit, for as
faithful believers, we know God cannot lie.
