CONCENTRICALLY LOADED WELDED

CONNECTIONS
PROBLEM 1
Determine the allowable tensile load that may
be applied to the connection shown in figure.
The steel is A36, and the electrode used was
E70 (manual shielded metal-arc welding). The
weld is a 11mm fillet weld.
Given:
Fu = 483 Mpa (electrode)

Fy = 248 Mpa (plate)

Fu = 400 Mpa (plate)

FIGURE FOR PROBLEM 1

125mm

300mm X
19mm

150mm X 19mm

Solution:
Fu = 70 ksi = 483N/mm^2
Allowable Shearing stress=0.3Fu = 144.9 N/mm^2
Length of fillet weld = 400mm
Weld Size = 11mm
Throat size = .707(11) =7.78 mm
For weld capacity:
Pa = Length X throat X allowable stress
Pa = 400mm x 7.78 mm x 144.9 N/mm^2
Pa =450.93 KN

For tension capacity of plate:

Pa = Ag x Fa
Fa = 0.6Fy = 0.6 (248) = 148.8 Mpa
Pa = 148.8 Mpa x (150mm x 19mm)
Pa = 424.08 KN
For block shear:
Pa = Av(0.3Fu) + Ae(.5Fu)a
Av = 2(125mm)(19mm) = 4750 mm^2
Ae = 150mm x 19mm = 2850 mm^2
