Dec 10, 2015

COLD OPEN
FADE IN:
EXT. FAMILY FUNERAL HOME - DAY
A LATE-MODEL HEARSE PULLS UP TO AN OLD, HOMETOWN FUNERAL
HOME AND PARKS ALONGSIDE OF THE STREET. THREE PEOPLE EXIT THE
CAR: MARY, 23, VERY PRETTY, PHIL, 16, TALL AND LANKY, AND
JOHN, EARLY 40S, MARY AND PHILS FATHER. THEY ARE ALL
WEARING BLACK FUNERAL ATTIRE AND SOMBER FACES.
THEY MOVE TO THE HOUSE WITHOUT A WORD.
INT. FAMILY FUNERAL HOME FOYER - CONTINUOUS
THE THREE ENTER THE HOME, AND ARE SPOTTED BY HIDRITH, THE
HOMES AGING GERMAN CARETAKER.
HIDRITH
Och, mein gott. My children, come
here. I make you something to eat?
MARY

PHIL

No thank you.

Yes please.

MARY SHOOTS A LOOK TO PHIL.

JOHN
I think thats a good idea Hidrith.
(to children)
You guys go upstairs and change.
MARY AND PHIL EXIT.
HIDRITH
How was the service? Did someone sing
praise?
JOHN
Very odd, and no. Ive never liked the
layout of the MacGregor home.

JOHN (CONT'D)

Its too hard to speak to everyone in

the room, and everything smelled like
lilacs.
HIDRITH
Lilacs were of favor to Alice.
JOHN
Yeah. But everyone and their mother
brought a bouquet. It was
overwhelming. Youd figure someone
would just go for a card.
HIDRITH
Was she gorgeous? Did they do good
job?
JOHN
Beautiful. As always. I really need to
ask George how he got her face to
smile.
HIDRITH
Und the children?
JOHN
I didnt even know her face could do
that...
HIDRITH
John. How are the children?
JOHN
Huh? Uh. Yeah, theyre better than I
expected.

3.
JOHN (CONT'D)

Phil took it hard in the beginning,

but he got through the prayer at the
church alright.
HIDRITH
And Marilda?
JOHN
She... Well... Didnt show any emotion
really. Couldnt keep her off her
phone.
HIDRITH
Im sure she is having a good reason.
INT. FAMILY FUNERAL HOME - MAIN VIEWING ROOM - THE NEXT DAY
THE MAIN VIEWING ROOM IS SET UP WITH PICTURES OF JOHNS
DECEASED WIFE, ALICE, LATE 30S, STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL WITH A
FIERCE LOOK, IN VARIOUS FAMILY TYPE SITUATIONS: FAMILY
PORTRAITS, VACATIONS, ETC. IT IS CLEAR FROM THE PHOTOS,
EVERYONE LOOKING MUCH YOUNGER IN THEM, THAT ALICE HAS NOT
BEEN APART THE FAMILY FOR A WHILE.
MARY IS TEXTING ON HER PHONE AS A LINE OF WELL WISHERS WAITS
TO OFFER CONDOLENCES.
WELL WISHER 1
I am so sorry for your loss dear.
MARY
(not looking up from her
phone)
Yep. Thanks.
WELL WISHER 2
My thoughts and prayers are...
MARY
Sure, thanks.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

4.
WELL WISHER 3

I am...
MARY
Sorry for my loss. Thanks.
WELL WISHER 4 DECIDES NOT TO SAY ANYTHING AND MOVES TO PHIL
INSTEAD.
WELL WISHER 4
I am sorry for your loss son.
PHIL
I appreciate you coming out. It really
means a lot. I miss my mother so much
and it really shows how much she meant
to the community to have you here.
WELL WISHER 4 SMILES AND MOVES ALONG.
MEANWHILE, ACROSS THE ROOM, JOHN IS TALKING WITH GEORGE
MACGREGOR, OWNER OF THE OTHER FUNERAL HOME IN TOWN.
GEORGE
Like what youve done with the place
Wiebel. Really love the openness of
the room. Must be a pain to heat
though.
JOHN
Yeah. Dad said the people used to pack
this place full every time we had a
new client.
GEORGE
Not the biggest draw anymore though,
death, is it?

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

5.
JOHN

No, not at all. Im sure youre

feeling it too though. I havent had
any business in almost a month.
GEORGE
Well actually, Ive got a meeting with
couple families after this. I cant
keep up with these people.
GEORGE SPOTS A COUPLE ENJOYING A DRINK ACROSS THE ROOM.
GEORGE (CONTD)
Speaking of which.
(to the couple)
Michael! Linda! Hows your mom doing?
Listen, if you ever need my services,
God Forbid, you know where to find me.
(sotto)

JOHN

Youve got to be kidding me.

ACROSS THE ROOM FROM JOHN, HIDRITH IS SPEAKING WITH AN
ELDERLY COUPLE.
HIDRITH
You should stew broth for 2 hours and
then put cloth over head
(making the motion)
And breathe for 12 minutes.
AS HIDRITH BREATHES IN AND OUT EXCESSIVELY, THE COUPLE
LEAVES, OBVIOUSLY WEIRDED OUT. JOHN MOVES OVER TO HIDIRTH.
JOHN
What did you say to the Mllers?

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

6.
HIDRITH

Jeremy has touch of gout. I was

helping.
JOHN
Well stop, this is a celebration of
life, not Old World Kook Fest.
HIDRITH
Kvach. Next time you have flu, dont
come to me looking for oxtail.
JOHN
Whatever.
HIDRITH EXITS AS JOHN MOVES TO MARY, NOW ALONE. STILL ON HER
PHONE.
JOHN (CONTD)
How you holding up honey?
MARY
Fine.
JOHN
Mary, can you please, for a second,
engage with humanity in a personal
way? For your mother?
MARY
Are you kidding? Mom left us. She
doesnt automatically get my respect
just because she died.
JOHN
For me then?

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

7.
MARY

Whatever.
MARY PUTS HER PHONE IN HER POCKET AND MOVES OVER TO A WELL
WISHER SPEAKING TO PHIL.
MARY (CONTD)
Hey, thanks for coming. You know my
mom abandoned us, then ODed on Coke?
JOHN
Oh sweet Jesus.
MARY EXITS AND WE:

ACT 1
INT. MAIN VIEWING ROOM - LATER
JOHN AND MARY ARE CLEANING WHAT IS LEFT AFTER THE
CELEBRATION. MOST OF THE WELL WISHERS HAVE LEFT, EXCEPT FOR A
FEW STRAGGLERS THAT PHIL IS HELPING OUT OF THE DOOR.
PHIL
(to each person as they walk
out the door)
Thank you so much again for coming...
Please do take care now... Drive safe
now, haha...
PHIL CLOSES THE DOOR AFTER THE LAST PERSON HAS LEFT.
PHIL (CONTD)
I swear to god. Those people would not
stop talking to me. It was like I was
the only person who lost someone.
MARY AND JOHN EXCHANGE A LOOK.
PHIL (CONTD)
Can I help with anything?
JOHN
No, Phil. I think your sister and I
have done most of what needs to be
done.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

9.

MARY
(under her breath)
Like actually knowing Mom.
JOHN
What was that Mary?
MARY
Are you both kidding? This whole day
has been so fake. Mom abandoned us!
JOHN
Mary, please keep your voice down.
MARY
Or what?! Whos going to hear me?!
PHIL
Everyone in this town probably, your
voice is so shrill.
JOHN
(To Phil)
Stop that.
(to Mary)
Yes, she did leave, but she had her
reasons. And she loved you.
MARY
Yeah, her reasons were that she didnt
love you anymore and she needed
space.
JOHN
Mary, you dont understand. Youre
mother was complicated. Our
relationship was complicated.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

10.
MARY

Whatever, Dad.
MARY EXITS.
PHIL
Whats her problem?
JOHN
Its just her way of dealing with it,
I think. At least shes off her phone.
PHIL
You okay dad? You really havent
stopped all day.
JOHN
Yeah, I forget how much work this is
sometimes. Im fine though, thanks.
JOHN GRABS THE LAST BIT OF TRASH OFF THE FLOOR.
JOHN (CONTD)
That should be that last of it.
Alright kiddo, bed.
PHIL
Im 16, Dad. I know when I need to go
to bed.
PHIL EXITS.
JOHN
Goodnight. Love you!
JOHN STANDS ALONE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE DAY BEGAN. HE
LOOKS AROUND THE EMPTY CHAMBER. HE STARTS TO CRY. HIDRITH
BEGINS TO ENTER, BUT STANDS IN THE DOORWAY. SHE WATCHES FOR A
MOMENT, THEN KNOCKS TO GRAB JOHNS ATTENTION.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

11.
HIDRITH

Herr John, I am finished.

JOHN
Thanks Hidrith. Ill lock up.
HIDRITH
You miss her, Ja?
JOHN
As much as I shouldnt, I do. I dont
know what to do. Id just want to see
her again. Let her know that I still
love her.
HIDRITH
Liebe ist eine Krankheit, die man
haben will.
JOHN
What?
HIDRITH
Love is sickness, one wants to have.
JOHN
Thats beautiful, thank you.
HIDRITH
Sleep, John. The day is done.
JOHN LEAVES.
HIDRITH IS ALONE FOR A MOMENT. SHE THINKS, THEN HAS AN IDEA.
INT. MAIN VIEWING ROOM - LATER THAT EVENING
HIDRITH ENTERS WEARING A LONG BROWN ROBE AND A HEADDRESS WITH
WITH BEADS AND FEATHERS. SHE HOLDS A GIANT, ANCIENT LOOKING,
BOOK. SHE SETS IT DOWN ON THE FLOOR AND OPENS IT A PAGE.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

12.

WHILE CHECKING THE BOOK, SHE TAKES A SMALL BAG OF SAND OUT OF
HER ROBE POCKET. SHE BEGINS TO THROW THE SAND AROUND THE ROOM
AND CHANTING.
HIDRITH
Graben sur under der Nachte.
SHE FINISHES. SHE LOOKS AT THE BOOK ONCE MORE, THEN UP
TOWARDS THE CEILING. SHE BEGINS SPEAKING.
HIDRITH (CONTD)
Ich rufe den Geist dieser nach Hause
zu meiner Wnsche zu erfllen. Diese
Familie ist kaputt und muss gesund
werden.
(in english)
(I call upon the spirit of this home
to do my bidding. This family is
broken and must be made whole.
HIDRITH TAKES A KNIFE FROM HER ROBE AND PUTS THE SHARP END IN
THE PALM OF HER HAND.
HIDRITH (CONTD)
Bringen Sie Leben zurck in diesem
Hause.
(Bring life back into this home.)
SHE SLICES HER HAND. BLOOD DRIPS DOWN HER HAND AND HITS THE
FLOOR. THE BLOOD FLASHES, AND DISAPPEARS.
HIDRITH LOOKS UP TO THE CEILING.
HIDRITH (CONTD)
Danke sehr.

INT. JOHNS OFFICE - THE NEXT DAY

JOHN SITS IN HIS OFFICE, ON THE COMPUTER. THE PHONE RINGS.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

13.
JOHN

Hello? Excuse me, Wiebel Funeral Home,

how may I help you?... Yes, thats
wonderful! I mean, terrible. Very
soory for your loss.... Well, we offer
a standard package for around $4,500,
that basically covers everything. And
then we have... Oh, okay. Sure I can
be sure to squeeze you in somewhere.
JOHN OPENS A BOOK ON HIS DESK. ITS A SCHEDULE. HE RUNS HIS
FINGERS DOWN THE DAYS TIME SHEET. ITS COMPLETELY EMPTY.
JOHN (CONTD)
How does 3pm today work for you?...
Wonderful. See you then.
JOHN HANGS UP THE PHONE AND LETS OUT A LITTLE WHOOP. HE
STANDS UP AND EXITS.
INT. FUNERAL HOME FOYER - CONTINUOUS
JOHN ENTERS VERY EXCITED. HE YELLS UPSTAIRS TO THE KIDS.
JOHN
Mary! Phil! Weve got a meeting today!
JOHN NOTICES THAT THE DOOR TO THE EMBALMING CHAMBER IS OPEN.
JOHN (CONTD)
What the hell?
(to upstairs)
What did I say about the embalming
room?
JOHN MOVES TO CLOSE THE DOOR WHEN HE HEARS A NOISE COMING
FROM THE ROOM. HE ENTERS TO INVESTIGATE.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

14.

INT. EMBALMING CHAMBER - CONTINUOUS

JOHN ENTERS THE CHAMBER. ITS A VERY CLEAN ROOM, SIMILAR TO A
MORGUE, WITH A EXAMINATION TABLE, SLABS THAT CLOSE INTO THE
WALLS, AND VIALS OF VARIOUS CHEMICALS ON THE WALL.
A VIAL OF SOME CHEMICAL HAS TIPPED OVER AND FALLEN ON THE
FLOOR. JOHN MOVES TO PICK IT UP. AS HE BENDS DOWN, HE LOOKS
UNEASY. A HAND MOVES TO HIS SHOULDER AND TOUCHES HIM. IT
STARTLES HIM.
JOHN
Ah! Holy Shit!
JOHN SEES WHO TOUCHED HIM. ITS HIS WIFE ALICE BACK FROM THE
DEAD. SHE IS STILL WEARING A NICE DRESS, MAKEUP, AND DONE UP
HAIR. ALBEIT STILL LOOKING VERY PALE.
ALICE
Hey, honey.
JOHN
What. The. Fu.....
END OF ACT ONE

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

15.

ACT TWO
INT. EMBALMING CHAMBER - CONTINUOUS
JOHN AND ALICE ARE STILL IN THE CHAMBER. JOHN STANDS MOUTH
AGAPE, NOT MOVING A MUSCLE.
ALICE
Well, arent you going to say
something.
JOHN DOESNT MOVE.
ALICE (CONTD)
Or anything? John. Its me.
JOHN
You cant be here. This is all a
dream. Youre dead. I just saw you
being put in the ground.
ALICE
Yeah, funny that, the whole death
thing. Cause Im here. And very much
alive.
JOHN
They said you died of an overdose.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

16.
ALICE

Oh, yeah. Makes sense. Last thing I

remember I was snorting a huge line of
some premo white. Explains the whole
box thing too.
JOHN
Box thing?
ALICE
Had to crawl out of a coffin to get
here. Totally messed up my shoes. They
dig those holes pretty deep.
JOHN
Yeah. So people will stay in them. How
are you even here?
ALICE
Dont know. One minute Im in the
bathroom at the firm scoring some good
stuff, did I mention that? Yeah. Then
I wake up in a coffin next to my
parents funeral plot. Figured it was
just a nice prank.
JOHN
Youve been dead for 2 months.
ALICE
Wow, really?
ALICE LOOKS DOWN AT HERSELF.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

17.
ALICE (CONTD)

I look good.
JOHN
Youre dead!
ALICE
Thats beside the point. How are the
kids?
JOHN
Are you serious? You die, and the
first thing you care about are the
kids?
ALICE
Maternal instinct?
JOHN
You left them behind when you walked
out. Remember?
ALICE
They were old enough not to need me
anymore.
JOHN
Phil was 10! Mary was 14!
ALICE
So theyre how old now?
JOHN
Jesus Christ, Alice.
HIDRITH ENTERS CARRYING A BUCKET OF WATER, HAVING HEARD THE
COMMOTION.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

18.
HIDRITH

Herr John, I find mud all over floor,

what is....
HIDRITH SEES ALICE.
HIDRITH (CONTD)
Gott im Himmel. Frau Alice!
ALICE
Hiddy! How the heck are you? You
havent aged a day.
HIDRITH
You make me blush. Stop.
JOHN
Not you too! Hidrith, shes dead!
HIDRITH
Not anymore.
HIDRITH WALKS OVER TO ALICE AND TOUCHES HER FACE.
HIDRITH (CONTD)
Cold, but alive.
JOHN
Youve got to be kidding me. How can
she be here. We buried her! She was in
the ground.
HIDRITH
Maybe she climb out.
ALICE
Ruined my shoes.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

19.
JOHN

No one cares about your damn shoes!

How could you be here? This isnt
right. Somethings wrong.
HIDRITH
Doch. Everything is right again.
JOHN
And how is that?
HIDRITH
You are family again. I go get
children, tell them Kobold give us
Alice back.
AS HIDRITH BEGINS TO EXIT, JOHN STOPS HER.
JOHN
Wait a minute, what? Kobold?
HIDRITH
I ask him to fix broken home. Bring
life back to house. He give us Alice.
JOHN
ALICE
What?!

Huh?
HIDRITH
I ask spirit of house for favor, offer
him little bit blood...

HIDRITH HOLDS UP HER NOW BANDAGED HAND.

HIDRITH (CONTD)
Then he give us Alice.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

20.
ALICE

Thats gross, Hiddy. But thanks! Do

you know where the kids are?
JOHN
Dont tell her. Listen, Id love to
figure this out right now, but Ive
got clients coming in and I need to
get ready for them. The living among
us need to eat after all.
JOHN MOTIONS TO HIDRITH TO EXIT. SHE DOES.
ALICE
So, what? Are you going to leave me in
here?
JOHN
Thats the plan.
JOHN SLAMS THE DOOR.
ALICE
John?! You cant do this to me! I have
rights!
JOHN O.S.
No you dont.
INT. HOUSE FOYER - LATER THAT DAY
JOHN IS FIXING A STACK OF FLYERS BY THE FRONT DOOR, WAITING
FOR THE COUPLE TO ARRIVE.
AS HE MOVES THE LAST ONE INTO PLACE, THE DOORBELL RINGS. JOHN
READIES HIMSELF, AND OPENS THE DOOR.
ITS THE COUPLE FROM THE CELEBRATION OF LIFE. MICHAEL AND
LINDA.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

21.
JOHN

Michael. Linda. Thank you for coming

by.
MICHAEL
Thanks for having us.
JOHN
Please come in.
THEY ENTER THE HOME.
LINDA
Its very large without all of the
people here.
JOHN
Yes maam. My grandfather said it was
built to hold the whole town, when the
folks used to come to everyones
funeral back in the day.
MICHAEL
Wouldnt that be nice.
JOHN
So youve already seen our main
viewing room, can I interest you in a
tour?
LINDA
What else is there to see?
JOHN
Plenty! When we host a client here at
Wiebel, we treat you like family.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

22.

A POUNDING CAN BE HEARD FROM THE EMBALMING CHAMBER.

MICHAEL
Whats that?
JOHN
Oh. Haha. Thats probably just my
daughter working in our preparation
room. Shes our embalmer actually. 2nd
year mortuary student up at the
college. Top of her class.
LINDA
I see. Whats included in the basic
package?
JOHN
Well, as I said on the phone...
AS JOHN BEGINS TO SPEAK, HIDRITH WALKS PAST.
HIDRITH
Herr John. Apologies. Frau Alice
wishes to eat something should I make
you the same?
JOHN
Oh, sure, Hidrith. Id love that,
thank you.
HIDRITH MOVES TOWARDS THE KITCHEN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION.
MICHAEL
Wasnt your wife named Alice?

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

23.
JOHN

Yes, haha. Hidrith named our dog after

my ex-wife. Said she felt a similar
energy.
MICHAEL
I see.
JOHN
Anyway as I was saying...
AS MICHAEL AND LINDA GIVE EACH OTHER A LOOK, JOHN CONTINUES
TO PITCH THE HOME.
INT. HOUSE FOYER - LATER
JOHN USHERS MICHAEL AND LINDA OUT.
JOHN
Thank you so much again, we will
handle all the arrangements from here
on out.
MICHAEL
Thank you, John. We really appreciate
it.
JOHN
No problem. Your mom meant a lot to
this town. Well give her the send off
she deserves.
JOHN SHUTS THE DOOR, AND PUMPS HIS FIST.
HE COMPOSES HIMSELF AND MOVES TOWARDS THE KITCHEN.
INT. KITCHEN - CONTINUOUS
MARY AND PHIL ARE SITTING AT THE TABLE EATING SANDWICHES.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

24.
PHIL

Hey, Dad.
JOHN
Hello my dear children. Hows about we
order a pizza tonight, my treat.
MARY
Literally just made sandwiches.
SHE HOLDS UP HER SANDWICHES.
PHIL
Whats the occasion dad?
MARY
Did Hidrith die?
JOHN
No. We have a client for next week. A
good one. Mrs. Garvey just passed
away.
MARY
The one with the cats?
JOHN
Yes, thats her. Family just left, I
got them to get a deluxe service.
PHIL
Damn, the whole nine yards.
JOHN
Exactly right. So I will need the both
of you to pull out all of the stops.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

25.
MARY

You mean you want me to make her not

reek of cats?
JOHN
If you can, yes. I want this to be our
best service ever. We need to get back
in peoples minds when they think
about death.
MARY AND PHIL EXCHANGE A LOOK.
JOHN (CONTD)
Have either of you seen Hidrith around
lately?
PHIL
I think shes in the embalming
chamber. She looked really excited
about something.
MARY
If shes gotten into my formaldehyde
again, I swear.
MARY EXITS.
JOHN
Mary, no!
JOHN EXITS AS A KNOCK IS HEARD AT THE DOOR.
PHIL
I guess Ill get it.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

26.

INT. HOUSE FOYER - CONTINUOUS

MARY STANDS AT THE DOORWAY TO THE EMBALMING CHAMEER.
MARY
What? God Dad, I dont yell at you
every time you go into your office.
JOHN
Im sorry. Its just, I knocked over a
vial before and I dont want you to
cut your feet.
MARY LOOKS DOWN AT HER FEET. SHES WEARING SHOES. SHE SHAKES
HER HEAD AND GOES INTO THE EMBALMING CHAMBER ANYWAY.
INT. EMBALMING CHAMBER - CONTINUOUS
MARY ENTERS AND SEES THE BROKEN VIAL ON THE GROUND. AS SHE
STARTS CLEANING, ALICE COMES OUT FROM BEHIND THE EXAMINATION
TABLE.
ALICE
Hey, baby girl.
MARY JUMPS UP IN THE AIR, STARTLED.
MARY
Shit! What the hell, Hidr...
MARY LOOKS UP AND SEES NOT HIDRITH, BUT HER MOTHER. JOHN
ENTERS.
JOHN
Mary, I know this will be hard to
process, but...
MARY
Mom? How?
ALICE
I dont know, honey. But Im here now.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

27.

MARY GOES FROM SURPRISED TO VISIBLY UPSET.

MARY
Youre about 5 years too late.
MARY EXITS IN A HUFF AS PHIL COMES INTO THE EMBALMING
CHAMBER.
PHIL
Hey, Dad? The police are here.....
PHIL SEES ALICE.
PHIL (CONTD)
Mommy?
PHIL IMMEDIATELY RUNS TO ALICE. THEY EMBRACE.
ALICE
My baby boy! Youre so big!
PHIL
They said you died? We had a funeral
for you. What happened?
ALICE
I dont know honey. All I know is that
Ill never leave you again.
MARY REENTERS.
MARY
Dad. The police are at the door. They
want to talk to you.
ALICE
Honey...
JOHN
Ill be right there.
MARY EXITS.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

28.
JOHN (CONTD)

I need to go. You two stay here.

END OF ACT TWO

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

29.

ACT THREE
INT. HOUSE FOYER - CONTINUOUS
THE POLICE BANG ON THE DOOR ONCE AGAIN.
JOHN O.S.
Coming!
JOHN ENTERS AND OPENS THE DOOR. TWO POLICE OFFICERS STAND ON
THE FRONT PORCH OF THE HOUSE.
POLICEMAN 1
Good Evening Sir, sorry to bother you,
but we have some troubling news.
JOHN
Oh man, what did my kids say this
time? Ha ha.
POLICEMAN 2
Nothing of that sort Sir, although,
the young lady did give us a bit of
guff when we wanted to come in. Said
we needed a warrant.
JOHN
Sorry about that, teenagers, you know?
So, how can I help you?

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

30.
POLICEMAN 1

Well, Mr. Wiebel, its about your

wife, Alice.
JOHN
Ex-wife, actually. And I dont
understand, she passed away 2 months
ago. We had the burial a few days ago.
POLICEMAN 2
We are very sorry for your loss, Mr.
Wiebel, but it appears as those
someone may have exhumed her body,
illegally.
JOHN FAKES BEING SUPRISED.
JOHN
Oh my god, are you serious? Thats
awful. Who would do such a thing?
POLICEMAN 1
Were looking into the matter now. We
should have leads in a few days. We
just wanted to inform you of the
situation.
JOHN
I appreciate that officer. Its nice
to see the both of you working so
hard.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

31.
POLICEMAN 2

Thank you. Its a tough job, but

someones gotta do it.
JOHN
So right you are.
JOHN STANDS IN THE DOOR AWKWARDLY.
POLICEMAN 1
Well, wed better get going back to
the station. Tell your daughter that
well be on the lookout for her if she
doesnt clean up her attitude.
JOHN
Of course. Ill speak to her.
POLICEMAN 2
Have a good night, Mr. Wiebel.
THE TWO POLICEMEN EXIT OFF THE PORCH AND JOHN CLOSES THE
DOOR.
JOHN
Mary!
INT. KITCHEN - CONTINOUS
MARY IS IN THE KITCHEN WITH HIDRITH, CUTTING VEGETABLES WHILE
HIDRITH IS STIRRING A POT OF SOUP. JOHN ENTERS.
MARY
Those pigs leave?
HIDRITH
We have pigs?

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

32.
JOHN

Policemen, Hidrith. And yes they have

left. For now.
MARY
Good. Dont need any more surprises
around here.
JOHN
Mary, what has gotten into you? Youre
on your phone the whole day, you
hardly spend anytime at home, and now
youre talking back to the police?
MARY SETS DOWN A KNIFE
MARY
You dont get it do you?
JOHN
Obviously not.
MARY
Youre so focused on this stupid house
that you never talk to me. You hardly
talk to Phil. Hell, the only people
you seem to talk to are yourself and
Hidrith.
ALICE ENTERS, HEARING THE ARGUMENT HAPPENING.
ALICE
Leave your father alone. Hes doing
his best.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

33.
MARY

Yeah because you up and left us for

some other man.
ALICE
Mary...
MARY
I dont care. You left us.
MARY EXITS.
ALICE
Im here now.
ALICE STANDS FOR A MOMENT. SHE BECOMES VERY SAD, AND LOOKS AS
IF SHES GOING TO CRY.
JOHN
What does this mean, you being here
now?
ALICE
I dont know.
JOHN
Well, I think somethings definitely
wrong. These things dont come without
something going wrong.
HIDRITH
Nonsense. The spell was meant to help,
not harm.
JOHN
Well, Mary seems very much helped
right now.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

34.

ALICE SINKS INTO A CHAIR. THE WEIGHT OF THE SITUATION HAS

FINALLY GOTTEN TO HER.
ALICE
I cant do this anymore.
JOHN
Lets just take the night to think
about what needs to get done.
(beat)
The guest bedroom is made up if you
want to take that.
ALICE LOOKS UP AT JOHN WITH SULLEN EYES.
INT. MAIN VIEWING ROOM - THE NEXT DAY
ALICE IS SITTING ON A CHAIR IN THE MAIN VIEWING ROOM, HAVING
CHANGED CLOTHES FROM THE NIGHT BEFORE. JOHN ENTERS WITH TWO
CUPS OF COFFEE. HE OFFERS ONE TO ALICE.
JOHN
Here.
ALICE
No thanks. Itll go right through me.
Literally.
ALICE MOTIONS TO HER STOMACH.
JOHN
Sleep well?
ALICE
Weird thing, sleep. I always felt
tired when I was alive. Now, Im just
here. Just existing.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

35.
JOHN

Wish I had that, could save a bunch on

coffee.
ALICE
Yeah, and you could read all those
books you wanted to.
THE TWO SHARE A MOMENT. HIDRITH ENTERS.
HIDRITH
Guten morgen!
ALICE

JOHN

Morning.

Hey.
HIDRITH

How are we doing?

JOHN
Fine thanks. Are the kids up?
HIDRITH
I yelled up to Marilda, but she told
me to go away and take Zombie too.
What is Zombie?
JOHN
Ill go get her.
JOHN EXITS AS PHIL ENTERS, STILL SLEEPY, WEARING PAJAMA
BOTTOMS AND AN OLD T-SHIRT.
PHIL
Morning, Mom. Morning, Hidrith.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

36.

ALICE
(speaking as if to a child)
Howd you sleep sweetie? No
nightmares?
PHIL
Nope. Thanks though.
HIDRITH
I make him special tea four years ago.
No bad dreams. Poof.
MARY ENTERS WITH JOHN IN TOW.
MARY
Why is she still here? It isnt right!
JOHN
Honey. Give me a second to explain.
MARY MOVES TO ALICE AND POINTS.
MARY
This, isnt natural. Even if she was
alive, she doesnt belong here.
ALICE
I think I like being a zombie more
now.
JOHN
Thats why were here, to talk about
this.
ALICE
What do you mean this John.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

37.
JOHN

I mean you either living here, or, you

know...
ALICE
Going back in the ground? Like worm
food? You cant be serious.
JOHN
Honey, obviously there is some major
stuff going here. Whatever Hidrith did
messed up the balance of life in our
house. For all intents and purposes
you really shouldnt be here right
now.
ALICE
But I am. Sure I cant hold coffee
down, or eat. But you shouldnt just
kick me out on the street.
MARY
You did the same to us.
ALICE
I did what I did so I could be happy.
So I didnt ruin your life like I did
mine.
JOHN
What do you mean? You werent happy
here?

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

38.
ALICE

John, you made me very happy.

JOHN
So why did you leave?
ALICE
Youre not helping.
MARY
Maybe you should just leave. Youve
done it before, it should be easy.
ALICE
Honey. You dont get it. Im not going
anywhere. I want to stay.
MARY STANDS, SHOCKED AT WHAT HER MOTHER HAS JUST TOLD HER.
AFTER A BEAT:
JOHN
Im not sure thats wise.
ALICE
Why? What are you so afraid of?
JOHN
I dont know. Hidrith hasnt told us
much of anything of what she really
did.
THEY ALL LOOK AT HIDRITH.
HIDRITH
I want to help. You say that you want
to tell Frau Alice how you feel. Tell
her you love her...

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

39.
ALICE

Really?
JOHN
Dont butt in.
HIDRITH
You say that you want family to be
better. I ask Kobold to help.
HIDRITH POINTS TO THE CEILING. THEY ALL LOOK UP, CONFUSED.
JOHN
What are you talking about, what is a
Kobold?
HIDRITH
Household spirit that helps in time of
need. Wants something for help.
JOHN
Great, so what do we have to do now?
Give it cheese after midnight or some
other cooky nonsense?
HIDRITH
No. No cheese. I give it blood. Is
finished.
PHIL
Thats gross Hidrith.
MARY
Thats really disgusting.
ALICE
So what now? Why am I here?

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

40.
HIDRITH

You are family. You make house whole.

EVERYONE FALLS SILENT.
PHIL
I want you to stay, Mom.
JOHN
Phil... I dont think thats...
PHIL
No. Listen to me. I didnt like it
when mom left before. And it really
hurt to watch her go. Now that shes
back, maybe shes been given a second
chance.
ALICE
I promise I wont leave ever again.
Ever.
MARY
Yeah, right.
MARY LOOKS AT JOHN. ITS PRETTY OBVIOUS HES THE DECIDING
VOTE.
JOHN
Well, Alice. What do you want? Really?
ALICE
I want to be a mom again.
JOHN
Then its settled. You can stay.
PHIL LEAPS UP IN HAPPINESS, AND HIDRITH LOOKS VERY HAPPY AS
WELL.

Kobold - Pilot - "Spellbound"

41.
HIDRITH

Och. Meine liebe. This is too much. I

go to clean.
HIDRITH LEAVES, HUMMING SOME OLD FORGOTTEN TUNE.
MARY
Great. This is just fantastic. If you
need me, Ill be upstairs doing drugs
and skirting responsibility, just like
my mom.
MARY EXITS.
JOHN
Shell come around in time. Whats the
worst that could happen?
