Refrain
By and by, when the morning comes,
When the saints of God are gathered home,
Well tell the story how weve overcome,
For well understand it better by and by.
We are often destitute of
The things that life demands,
Want of food and want of shelter,
Thirsty hills and barren lands;
We are trusting in the Lord,
And according to Gods Word,
We will understand it better by and by.

PSALM 139:13-14 (niV)

For you created my
inmost being; you knit
me together in my
mothers womb. 14I praise
you because I am fearfully
and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
13

Trials dark on every hand,

And we cannot understand
All the ways that God could lead us
To that blessed promised land;
But He guides us with His eye,
And well follow till we die,
For well understand it better by and by.

February 21, 2016

Lord, light up your house this morning

and chase away the dark shadows that
tried to creep into our dreams.
Lord, cleanse us this morning from the sin
that has stained our spirits.
Lord, rock us this morning - out of a
slumber of do nothingness to the call of
Here am I, send me.
Lord, we came here not to strut, play,
prance, or be cute. We came because
we need You and want to be in Your
presence.

Lord, show up today with such power

that the choir will sing heaven down upon
the people and people will be bathed in
unrestricted praised.
Lord, show up this morning with such
power, the preacher will walk the benches
and float just above the pews.
Lord show up this morning with such
power, a divorce will be nullified, sickness
will be healed, depression will turn to
joy, defeat will turn to triumph, wayward
children will come, and broken hearts will
be made whole.
Lord show up
Lord show up
Lord show up
We thank You!
We love You!
We glorify Your Name today!
Amen, amen, and amen.

Fasting For The Lenten Season

As we prepare for our churchwide Lenten season fast, keep in mind our 2016 Theme The Fruit of the
Spirit: Taste and See! Our reset cards for 2016 reflect the monthly Bible scriptures that support our
theme, focusing on a separate fruit each month. For the time of our fast, they will focus on Joy and
Peace. You are encouraged to use this resource as one of your sources of inspiration during our fasting
period and beyond. Fasting is a spiritual discipline designed to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ.
We do not fast to lose weight; we fast to be empowered by Jesus Christ. In 2016, as we seek to renew
our relationship with God, God will reveal Gods purpose and plan in your life if you dare fast, pray,
study and learn the power of quiet time. Jesus had to steal away from the crowd and spend time with
his Father in the mountains, to pray, study, reflect, meditate, and center his spirit. If fasting and prayer
were the disciplines of Jesus, should not this be followed by us? Join with us this season and witness a
breakthrough, as we fast, pray, study, reflect, meditate, and learn the power of quiet time.
Question: i have never fasted before?
Answer: Consult your doctor first!* Fasting is not
the removal of all food from your diet. Fasting is
learning to discipline your mind, body and spirit
to remove something you know hinders your
ability to function at your highest capacity, from
your life or diet.
Question: is fasting biblical?
Answer: Fasting is biblical. Throughout the Old
and New Testaments, fasting was used by the
people of God to prepare for a spiritual challenge,
hear Gods voice before making a major decision,
and for removing destructive forces in your life.
Fast #1 - Fasting to confront destructive forces
February 10 February 16
Eat all your meals before 6:00 p.m.
February 17 February 23
Eat only two meals, before 6:00 p.m.
February 24 March 1
Eat only one meal a day before 6:00 p.m.
March 2 March 8
Drink only juices, water, and/or tea
March 9 March 15
Eat only fruits and vegetables, before 6:00
p.m.
March 16 March 26
Slowly begin to add meat to your diet
Fast #2 The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book
of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the
Babylonians, he asked of the Babylonians if he,
along with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,

could fast eating only fruits and vegetables so they

would be prepared to confront the Babylonian
king.

February 10 February 16
Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.
February 17 February 23
Eat only two meals a day, before 6:00 p.m.
February 24 March 1
Eat only fruits and vegetables, before 6:00
p.m.
March 2 March 8
Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m.; meat
may be added.
March 9 March 15
Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m.; meat
may be added.
March 16 March 26
Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m.

Fast #3 - Removing certain foods or items from

your diet or life. One type of fasting is to remove
certain foods from your diet, such as fried foods,
sweets, sodas, or refined sugar and/or flour.
*Please seek the advice of your primary care provider/
doctor before beginning a fast that involves restricting
food/calories and/or medication. Your doctor can help
you design a fasting plan that protects your health
and well-being. This is extremely important if you are
pregnant or have a medical condition. Medical condition
examples include, but are not limited to those who have a
chronic disease such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, hypertension,
heart disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease,
recent surgery, etc.

AND

Announcements
February is American heart Month
In an effort to increase awareness concerning heart disease, the Immabasi Health and Wellness
Ministry would like to share a few educational facts surrounding heart disease and its impact in
the African American community on this Valentines Day, from our heart to yours:
Are you aware that Heart Disease is the #1 killer in the U.S.? A few facts:
African Americans and heart Disease
African Americans are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke than White
Americans.1 African American women (49%) and African American men (44%) have
higher rates of heart disease than White men (37%) and White women (32%)
The annual rate of first heart attack and first stroke is higher for African Americans than
White Americans.
Between the ages of 45 and 64, African American men have a 70% higher risk and
African American women have a 50% greater risk of developing heart failure than White
men and women.
African Americans and Risk Factors
African American (80%) and Mexican American (78%) women are more likely to be
overweight or obese than White women (60%)
The prevalence of high blood pressure ( hypertension) in African-Americans is among the
highest in the world, and its increasing. Rates are particularly high for African-American
Women
African American and Hispanic adults are more likely to be inactive 39.4% and 39.8%,
(respectively) than White adults (26.2%)
Although the aforementioned Heart Disease statistics maybe frightening to the African American
community it is important to know that Heart Disease and most Risk Factors can be prevented or
treated. You can take charge today and manage your own health by:
Reducing your risk factors. Make simple healthy lifestyle changes; i.e., minimize or
eliminate the junk /fried food and stop smoking
Know your risk factors. Some risk factors you cant change i.e., age and race. Some you can
directly impact; i.e., your weight and daily activity
Reduce or manage stress through meditation, learning to trust God, etc.
Talk to your doctor
Educational materials are available in the Habari Gani rack located in the Atrium. Feel free to stop
by Room 102, follow the directions of the Higi health machine and take your blood pressure. A
hypertension seminar will be conducted later this Spring. Please check the bulletin for additional
information.

4th grade, one third of them have lost an interest in science. By 8th
grade, the number swells to almost 50% who have lost interest or
deemed science irrelevant to their education or future plans.

Parents, we invite you and students of ALL ages to join us for the first in a series of interactive
sessions to learn about the many programs offered at Rush University. Your child will rotate
through medical stations, engage in hands-on medical procedures and hear from first-year
medical students of color about the requirements for and their experiences in medical school.

2016 SPRING BREAK COLLEGE TOURS

Did you know?
Tiny Xavier University consistently produces more Black students who apply to and graduate
from medical school than any other institution in the country. Xavier is also first in the nation
in graduating Black students with bachelors degrees in biology and physics. It is among the top
four institutions graduating Black pharmacists and third in the nation in graduates who go on to
earn doctorates in science and engineering.
This year, the Endeleo Institute is touring colleges and universities in the state of Louisiana,
including Xavier University. Thats right, were about to go there!
Stop by our table in the Atrium after the 7:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. worship services for
more information and registration.

Yet, now more than ever, there is dire need for more African American health professionals in the
fields of research and science due to disproportionate health disparities in our community. That
is why the Endeleo Institute teamed up with Rush University to create a pipeline of young people
poised to explore the field of medicine.
